getting out of my car, i see tiffany from across the street in her front yard. quickly i dash over. i have tried to reach her for days now, but she has never been at home.
"tiffany, hello" i smile "am i glad to finally see you."
she looks up from gardening and grins back, trying in vain to wipe a smudge from her left cheek with her dirty glove. "hi sandy, what's up?"
tiffany is by far my favourite neighbour now, after Susan from next door has left her creepy boyfriend. even though tiffany must be about 45, maybe even older, she has kept her heart young, and is always brutally honest with everything and everybody.
"i have a big favour to ask tiffany" i start "jim and the kids left this morning for the cottage, and i will drive up there myself tomorrow. i had to work one last shift today, and really want to do the very last pilates course before the summer break tomorrow, that's why i stayed. could you please look after our mail and water my flowers for the next two weeks. i'd really appreciate that."
"sure hun" tiffany says in her no-nonsense way "i can do that. you're lucky, you know. i spend the last 4 days at my parents, and i am glad that i am back home now. geez, old people can really get on your nerves." she laughs "so tomorrow you'll be doing mailcall and the plants?"
"yes, i will do everything before i leave, tiff. sunday wont be any mail, so you wont have anything to do before monday. thank you so much. i really, really apprechiate that."
"oh don't worry hun, i will think of something that you can do for me some other time "she smiles mischievously. "now go, pack, and leave me to mutilate my garden."
i walk over to our house, not without a quick glance to our direct neighbour. as much as i miss susan, i'm really glad she left her boyfriend. he is a weird one. i remember when i was over there and asked susan the very same thing i just asked tiffany. she agreed, and i gave her our spare key when he came in. "she is not getting our key" was all he said and then he walked out again.
back then susan just shook her head and laughed. "i know what you are thinking, but you are wrong" she said "he is not half as grumpy as he appears, he is just uneasy around people." and then she gave me her spare key. after susan left him, i had returned that key and asked for ours. he just took his and mumbled "susan prolly still has it, i sure don't" and then he slammed the door in my face. on that day i had vowed to change our locks, but somehow i never got around to have it done, and now tiffany has a key to our house, so it really isn't appropriate to change the locks. i shrug of the past, send a happy thought to susan, wherever she might be today, and finish packing my things for tomorrow.
it is really weird to have the house to myself. no kids arguing, no jim to cuddle. i watch a lil' tv and enjoy one glass of wine, before i turn in early. with a lil' luck i will be at the cottage tomorrow at this time. i hate driving in the dark, and hope to be there before dusk.
