Adam went through school anticipating the end of the day. His eyes were glued to the clock as he counted down the day minute by minute until that last shook bell rang. When that happened he flew out to the student parking lot to his car and drove home as fast as he could. He was excited, "Today is the day!" He repeated to himself as the car roared across the road.

When he reached his house he quickly parked and ran inside. He said hello to his mother quickly and ran upstairs to his room. He slammed the door behind him and sat down at his desk pulling out the large consol and head set. This was why he was so excited, this consol and head gear was his access to his favorite game, MechWars. It used cutting edge virtual reality technology. The head set contained sensors that sent signals and images to your brain that made you feel like you were actually in the game. You could feel the weight of each mech part, the heat of battle, and the pleasures of a female companion. He had been playing his game since freshman year so he was pretty hooked. He had built up a mech that had served him well. Not wanting to wait any longer he put on the headset and let his body go limp in his chair as his mind delved into the game.

Next thing he knew he was in the game at his usual start up point, his hangar. He walked over to the closet in his hangar and it brought up the inventory screen for his Avatar, Sage. He made sure everything was in order before he left for the guild arena. He walked along the game area and saw the variety of users online right now, they were different kinds of people. Aliens, furries, and humans alike were on this game, imagination was the only limit. When he arrived at the arena he saw that there was a huddle of people and there seemed to be some shouting. When he got closer he saw what was causing it, guild rivalries. He saw the blue of his guild getting physical with the red of their rivals. He asked what had happened and it turns out that one of their rivals members was mouthing off and it caused a few of his friends to get mad and now he was caught up. The two crowds parted and the one who was boasting stepped forward. The avatar of the character had greased long red hair, he was skinny and tall wearing two shoulder pads with spikes, and nothing else on his torso. He had his chest puffed out and was shouting, "Ha I bet none of you could beat me! Even with one arm tied behind my back." Adam wasn't about to take that coming from that obnoxious asshole. He stepped forward and took the challenge.

They both stepped into the arena, Sage coming first in his Quanta, the gold shining in the sunlight. His opponent stepped into the ring with a boxer mech The horn in the ring sounded and the fight began.

Cathleen was at her wits end when she'd watched her son Adam drive off to school that day; things were coming to desperate measures. She was facing the typical challenges of being a parent with an adolescent son and was having a hard time connecting with Adam. She rarely got two words out of him and had tried just about everything from cooking his favorite food to buying him video games. Whether it was misfortune or simply the way things worked, Cathleen was not having any luck. For what felt like the longest time it seemed as though the only thing Adam did connect with was that video game MechWars. Cathleen didn't know much about gaming, she hadn't been raised on it and couldn't quite comprehend the attachment some youths and even adults felt for the world of virtual reality. For a moment her brow knitted together in quiet thought as the tail end of her son's car disappeared and then her face lit up with an idea so far fetched that it might just work.

Cathleen wasn't one for invading other's privacy, and no less that of her son's; she respected his need for his own life. However, she really was desperate and would do anything to salvage what was left of their bond before it was too late. So, it was with a great deal of trepidation and perhaps some guilt that she went out to the stores that day and returned with a new version of MechWars and the store's guarantee that it wasn't hard to set up. Cathleen sincerely doubted her husband would approve of this plan, he'd tell her to simply let it go and that things would work out in their own time. So protruding into her son's virtual reality was a project he'd put an end to rather quickly. Consequentially, the worried mother decided she'd set up the game in her craft room downstairs that her husband and son both made a point of avoiding. Once the gear out of the box, it quickly became evident that installation wouldn't be so easy and it was only over the course of the next three hours -and through sheer grit- that the un-tech savvy mother managed to get everything properly hooked up. By the end of it all, Cathleen was feeling rather proud of her day's accomplishment.

The rest of the day was spent anticipating her son's return home and cleaning up the place to calm her nerves. Soon enough the sound of a car in the driveway was heard through the house and she made her way into the kitchen to greet Adam. She received a passing "hello" as Adam made his way through the house and then heard the sound of his door closing. Giving her kid the chance to settle down, Cathleen finally made her way downstairs and into her craft's room. Here she plugged in her Ipod and turned to her Beatles playlist so that her husband would know not to bother her and then installed the headset as directed and let her mind go into the game. The experience of leaving the real world behind was frightening, but her resolve to carry her plan through kept her in the game. The avatars to choose from for females were rather scantily clad and it was by accident that Cathleen ended up choosing her outfit. She then chose Iris as her avatar's name and was launched into the game.

Left completely unsure of where to go, Irish made her way towards a group of people around some kind of arena where some shouting could be heard. There were a few odd robotic contraptions around, she'd read about them in the instruction's manual, players used them for fighting it seemed. In the center of the arena two players had moved forward, one team sporting blue and the other red and though she didn't know much about either players, the one in blue appeared more approachable. Watching with mounting amazement, Cathleen observed the two fighting together, a budding sense of wonder for the skills being displayed. She didn't know much about fighting, but it seemed the blue player had more than the other. At some points she even found herself cheering on with the rest of the crowd, forgetting for a second the real reason she was in the game.

When the bell sounded Sage waited, the mech did not even flinch. His breathing was at a steady pace and his grip on the controls was light. He watched as his opponent danced around the arena like Muhammad Ali, he even shouted, "I am the greatest!!" Sage stood still not wanting to give in to his taunting. Finally his opponent had it with playing games and charged at the Quanta, fists blazing at him like a machine gun. He reacted by pushing his feet down on the vertical thrusters and engaged the internal drive and leapt into the air. He floated above him as he passed under him. He dashed to the opposite side if the arena and drew his long green sword the green blade shining as the special effect to the sword activated. He disengaged the verticals thrusters and landed to the ground with a resounding thud. His opponent wheeled around and began to comically wind up a pinch by moving the mechs right arm in a windmill like motion. Seeing this as a challenge Sage activated the GN Drive, the shield on his left shoulder shifting to the back and attaching to the back of the mech. He pressed onto the forward thrust pad in the cockpit and the Quanta launched forward and took off at a fast speed small particles of green being left behind him. As he drew near his opponent winded up faster and pulled the fist back as he drew closer and closer to him. Sage readied his attack. When he was within range his opponent threw the punch. Sage quickly shot to the side but the blow still got him in the side so it sent him spinning. Sage used this momentum to spin around back of his opponent. The Quanta received heavy damage but it was intact enough to keep going. He used one sword to pierce through the chest of the mech and the other to slice the head off, it was over. These were the rules of the arena, once the head was gone, the match was over. Normally fights didn't last this short, but it was the idiots fault for not keeping on his guard.

After he took down his opponent they both went through the after battle game screens, the XP screens and record screens, etc. With that battle done the mechs went back to their hangers for repairs. When they both returned outside the arena, the man who was boasting earlier left in a huff a trail of his friends followed behind him trying to comfort him by saying it was luck.

He only smiled as he left, "Serves you right." He went to go see his parts dealer for the one part he was missing for a new mech he had been working on for the past year. Making his way through the crowd he bumped into someone he hasn't seen around the arena or the game, a tall black haired girl in the standard skimpy outfit they gave the female players. His display showed him her name and level, 1. So a noob was taking a look around. He smiled at her and apologized, "Sorry about that, I didn't see you there."

The newb mother continued to watch the match with the rest of the crowd, her eyes focused on the players, finding herself easily annoyed with the red player who displayed such an arrogance that Cathleen couldn't help but want the blue player to shut him up. For a little bit they exchanged spars and then it seemed the blue player took the advantage and disposed of his opponent with an ease that even she could appreciate. Well, she'd not come here to fight, and never would be able to enter in a battle of her own, but it didn't mean she couldn't try to understand some more. In fact, it was probably best that she make an attempt to understand, especially if it meant she might have something to use when it came to connecting with her son.

As the match ended, the crowd seemed to thin out, different colors following their respective groups. Iris moved through the throng, trying to decide where to go and keeping an eye out for the blue player. He seemed to know what he was doing, if she followed him a bit she might have a better comprehension of the game. The experience was a bit overwhelming and Iris was beginning to think she was in over her head. What the hell had she been thinking, she'd never been one to play video games growing up, she was way out of the technology loop, this was foreign territory!

All of a sudden Iris felt someone bump into her and she stumbled a bit, trying to catch her balance to prevent falling. Once that done she turned to see who was apologizing and laid eyes on the player from the match. It seemed faith had not quite abandoned her and she laughed nervously, finding the situation a little funny. The other player might just assume she was brushing the little bump off, which was fine by her. Glancing at the player, she noticed his stats and a look of shock crossed her face, she knew enough about the game to recognize someone who knew what they were doing and were obviously good at it. Oh, no need to apologize, it was just an accident. You're the one in the match back there, aren't you? You played very well, will your, um," she desperately tried to find the word, and then finally remembered it from the instruction manual, "Quanta be alright?" Iris breathed an inward sigh of relief, realizing that this would not be as easy as she would have hoped.
