The loss of so many of the fighters in the war had been a shame. Katherine new that but all the same she held out a hope that her fighter would come home. She had done so for a long time and slowly but surely less and less of her believed it. Eventually she had been forced to move on with her life. She had hated it for a long time and she had tried to not submit to the ideas and meanings for as long as possible.
Now, a year and a half later, she stood staring at the man on his knees offering her a ring. She had been about to take it before her mind settled. "No." Her words came softly and she turned away. "No Nathan, I can't." She had been left alone the rest of the day and she had knelt alone in her home, praying for a sign that she had made the right choice. When no reply came she let her tears fall, blue-grey eyes clouding with tears and pain. Her words had been sad as she whimpered.
"I miss you..."
The person she was talking to may have been dead, she didn't even know.
