Andrew was 18 years old and finishing Public High School. He knew his future wasn't bright at all and that he wasn't going to college. He wasn't an A-Student and his family was dirt poor. His mother bought food using coupons and foodstamps. He often went to bed hungry and the meals provided at school tended to be about the only meals he knew he'd have on a daily basis. Not that his mother didn't try, but still, the kids at school always made fun of him. He wore the same 3 outfits to school each week but he didn't have any other clothes.
Even so, he was tall for 18 but lean, almost skinny. He'd never had a girlfriend - who wanted to date a guy that you had to pay for afterall? - and had hardly been kissed over his years at school. He was always the outcast, the one no one wanted to be seen around.
Now, he was sitting in the Kitchen, flipping through the newspaper, looking for jobs that some one with a GED could get. His prospects weren't looking good and he was just about willing to do anything.
