The buzzer was piercingly loud, but evidently not loud enough to wake up Aiden as he slept in his bed. 7:30 had come and gone some twenty or so minutes earlier, and still the young teen was fast asleep. Jessica, Aiden’s older sister had already been up and moving for almost an hour now, and she was just about ready to head out. At least, that’s what she had wanted to do, afterall it was first day of the new school year, and she wasn’t about to be late.

But before she left, she had to make sure her brother was up and moving. Her parents had charged her with ensuring that Aiden made it to school. They both worked early, and had left well before Jessica or Aiden were awake. She wasn’y happy about the arrangement, feeling as though her dumb brother should be grown up enough to wake himself up.

“Aiden!” she screamed as she pounded her fist against his door, scoffing angrilly when all she heard in return was the still sounding buzzer of his alarm clock.

“Aiden! Get up!” she hollered, pounding against the door a second time. Stopping a moment, she checked her watch; 7:56, Aiden’s bus would be there in just four minutes, meaning he’d no doubt miss it. She’d have to give him a ride, just what she wanted to do.

“Damnit!” she remarked, kicking his bedroom door hard. She cursed her parents for having left her with this duty, wishing instead they’d just treat Aiden like a young adult, rather than the child that he wanted to be. She clenched her jaw tightly, and pounded on the door one more time, knowing it to be futile.

She grasped the door handle, turned it, and barged into her little brother’s bedroom. Immediately she recoiled her nose at the stench that was all to common among teenage boys’ rooms. “…ugh, what a pig…” she said as she took a step close to her brother’s bed, and stopped just before it, seeing that her brother was fast asleep. “Aiden! AIDEN!” she hollered twice, hoping to stir her brother from his slumber.

The buzz was getting annoying as she stood there, and angrilly she slapped her hand against the alarm, turning off it’s buzzer. “AIDEN!” she again hollered.

In the distance the clittter-clatter of Cerberus, Aiden’s great dane, echoed down the hallway as the big dog approached. No doubt the sound of her raised voice had alerted her brother’s pet dog, and a moment later the big beast came barrelling into the bedroom. “Watch out!” she hollered at Cerberus as the dog nearly knocked her over as it jumped onto Aiden’s bed, no doubt awakening his master.

His last memory of the night before had been of watching various videos of cats doing silly things, looking at the time, seeing that he would be having to get up in four hours, then sliding into his bed to drop to sleep. It seemed sleep didn't want him to leave it's embrace, and he groggily started to wake up, just as his sister was blaring in his ear. The real awakening came when Cerberus leaped on top of him, the large canine actually making him shift on the bed. "That's a good boy..." He groaned, sitting up and yawning, pushing the dog away that was eagerly trying to lick his face.

He looked across, shielding his eyes from the light, before they adjusted and he saw the angry figure of his sister. "Jeez, chill..." Aiden yawned loudly, shaking his head tiredly. "What time is it, any way?" He added, turning to look at his alarm clock as his sister glared at him. "Oh." Was the only think he grunted before literally jumping from bed. "I'll be ready in 5! Sorry Jess!" He said, quickly walking past her and giving her a childish kiss on the cheek, as if to somewhat take the mic of her.

Walking into the bathroom and pushing the door somewhat mostly shut, he stripped off quickly and turned the shower on. The hot water washed over his body, and in record time of 2 minutes, he had washed his hair and his body, jumping out to speedily brush his teeth, then dry himself as well. "I'll be downstairs in 2 minutes, promise!" Aiden said to his sister, pushing her lightly out of his room then pushing the door in. He dropped the towel and quickly pulled on a pair of boxers, dark blue jeans, a pretty boring red and grey t-shirt, a weathered fabric coat and picking up his schoolbag that he had the foresight to pack the night before, oddly enough.

"Right, I'm done." He announced happily, looking at his wrist and realising that despite his best efforts, he would have missed the bus by at least three minutes. Aiden sighed and looked at his sister. "I couldn't ask for a lift could I?"

It was something of a boon and a burden to be under the stewardship of his sister most days while his parents were out early at work. It meant he got lifts everywhere and they weren't ordering him around all the time, but it also meant he had to do whatever she said, which could be a huge pain in the arse. Like this for example, she could have just prodded him instead of yelling at the top of her voice.

Jess watched as he brother came to the stark realization that not only was he late to awake, but even late to catch his bus to get to school. She grinned watching him scramble about, trying to get ready as quickly as he could; and even though she was a little irritated by his refusal to grow up, she still felt an endearing sense of affection for her little brother. When they were little, she took care of her brother, and even now she was still looking after him, but she didn’t mind all that much. She just didn’t want to see her brother fail to make it as an adult, she wanted him to be ready for the challenges he would face in life.

“..alright, alright…” she said as he shoveled her out of his room to dress. She made he way downstairs to wait by the front door, looking up the stairs expectantly for her brother. She knew she’d be giving him a ride, since he’d already missed the bus. A moment later, she saw him come down the stairs slowly, and she raised an eyebrow playfully. “…you’re lucky to have me as a big sister. Sure, I’ll give you a lift.” She said, jabbing Aiden in his bicep gently.

“…c’mon, let’s get going…” she said as she turned to walk out the front door.

Green Grove, the small rural town they lived in, was an upper-class community in southern California. Everyone in town knew each other, and they all seemed to attend the same places. Jess and Aiden’s mother was an aide to the Town’s Mayor, and their father was the senior Pasteur at the local Lutheran Church. It was the American Dream.

Jess walked casually toward her red 2004 VW Convertible Bug, the warm summer wind blowing stiffly as it caught her long brunette hair, and the hem of her gray plaid skirt. With one beep, the car was unlocked, and Jessica took her seat behind the wheel, then retracted the canopy roof of her car. She started tuning the radio until she’d found 98.1, the local Pop Music station, and waited for her brother to lock the front door to the house, and get into the car.

Picking up his phone and wallet, as well as his headphones, he followed his elder sister outside with a hurried walk, not wanting to be late, since he had Ms. Allen first and she had a pet hate of students being late. She was naturally a nice person, but every one had little things that they couldn't stand. Ms. Kane, for example, hated not completing homework, yet she wasn't harsh. "Ah damnit." Aiden swore, shaking his head, forgetting he had homework in for today.

Nearly forgetting to lock the door, he spun on his heel and quickly locked it, putting the key in his pocket and getting into Jess's car, relaxing in the comfy seats. It was a gorgeous day, but so were most days. He would certainly be eating on the field, pointless to stay indoors on such a nice day. "Thaaaaank you sis." He thanked once more, smiling across to her and placing his bag in between his feet on the floor.

Unlike most teenagers, he didn't actually mind Pop music, although he did get annoyed when Music stations played them over, and over, and over again. Once or twice every couple of days, not a half-dozen times a day, that just ruined it. "You know, I'm pretty glad you got a convertible, can't see why people don't buy them more often." He remarked, putting the window down and letting his elbow rest on the door. He still looked like he had just woken up, with his hair somewhat messy and wild, something he hadn't really noticed.
