Tessa was sitting at her desk with a bright white glow illuminating from her computer. She had headphones on blaring out music; she was finishing an online project for school. The good thing was she was already out of high school and taking online college courses. She had graduated her last year from high school that was eight months before a tragic car accident took her parents lives. When that happen, her whole life changed dramatically. Considering her parents lived miles away from her their grandparents and had no other wealthy living relatives Dr. Herbert West who was her Uncle was called by social services to take her in. Considering she wasn’t a minor basically all she had to do was pack, get on a plane and move to her uncle’s estranged house in Washington State.

At first the move was emotionally hard to deal with. Her uncle was distant, private and very strict but also accommodated to her needs. He lived in a two story Victorian house that was in the country about twenty minutes or so from the city. There were a few other farm houses around, but there was a hell of a lot of space, woods and farm land. Tessa had her own spacious bedroom on the second floor; he had it cleared out before she came. He also paid to have it carpeted and painted to her liking. She was allowed to roam the rest of the house as long as she didn’t go into the basement and didn’t bother him with trivial matters.

She was given a pretty decent allowance to get her own belongings and necessities as long as she stayed in college, he was a doctor, and interning at the local hospital and made pretty wealthy pay so he was more than able to provide for the both of them. She was still dealing with her mental state so she just took online classes at the university he worked at, she got free tuition and when she was ready, could go to the actual campus.

Herbert was downstairs in his makeshift laboratory dresses in the usual, black slacks and a white work shirt that was untucked and unbuttoned at the sleeves from a long day of work and then taking longer hours down here to work on his project. A dead animal lay on top of a medical gurney dissected. After not having a reaction with his agent he cursed and took off his goggles leaning over the table. His mind was flustered, especially with the university keeping a close eye out for him since he opened his mouth a little to much about his private research on re-animating dead tissue.

RThe house was silent, almost too silent, ever since Tessa had moved in he was used to hearing the creaking of the house as he worked below. He had secretly gotten use to her company, not that they spent hours together but even knowing she was here was of some comfort. She wasn’t like most girls her age, she showed potential of being successful, and most of all obeyed him and wasn’t a problem like she thought she would be.

Herbert admired the silence for a moment. Peace and quiet. That's when he started to worry something was wrong. She was never quite this silent. He walked leisurely up the stairs and into the foyer. Then up a second flight of stairs and down the hall. He opened the last door on the right and peeked in curiously, seeing her on her computer. He sighed quietly. Good, he thought to himself.

Tess was unaware of Herbert checking in on her as she was blasting music on her headphones as she typed away, until she sensed him. When she looked behind, she saw him staring at her. It was awkward for a moment before she decided to speak. “Did you need something? Am I being too loud?” She asked knowing she couldn’t have been and he was working underground the house. Hebert shook his head seeming a little more off than usual.

“No, no your fine. I was just checking in on you. I will leave you to your own.” He said discretely and shut the door vanishing. Tessa stood there in her chair feeling really weird considering her and Herbert never talked unless she was downstairs cleaning, getting food or he was going to bed which was never. Tessa got up and sighed knowing she should probably go and make sure everything was ok with him. She got u and pulled a sweat shirt over her plain gray t-shirt, she was pretty small framed and almost looked gaunt, she had a pale completion and wasn’t really the prettiest of them all, but that didn’t seem to mind now, not that she was isolated from the world as it was.

Herbert cracks a small smile, internally mocking himself for being so worried. "What was I thinking? She was just on her computer." He said softly to himself, walking down the stairs toward his lab. His footsteps echoed throughout the home, his house's excellent acoustics making the sound travel a long ways. He stepped down the steps to his lab and shut the door behind him, not bothering to lock the door in his hurry to figure out how his agent had failed. He put it under a microscope and consulted his notes, focused on his work.

Tessa ended up descending the stairs and knew Herbert must have gone back down to the basement and she swore it must have been him who had just been in her room unless it was a ghost, which wouldn’t be a surprise in this old creepy place. Grabbing a water bottle from the fridge she leaned against the counter and looked out the window into the farm land that eventually turned into nothing but dark deep forest. She saw lightening far away in the distance and knew a storm must be coming. She sat down at the little table in the kitchen and drank from the water bottle feeling lonely and bored. She looked at the hallway that led to the door to the basement. She knew she was forbidden to go down there and never question it before; she didn’t want to know what research or weird antics he was up too. There was this estranged longing to be near him which was awkward in itself.

She knew it would be ridiculous to just interrupt him but if she had an excuse, so she decided to cook for him. She got out the ingredient and started to cook some soup, and made a salad, she was given money and kept the house stocked with food and other essentials, it was a plus to having her here, and she kind of took care of the house when he wouldn’t or would forget. After making two bowels, and setting out salad plates she knocked on the door.

“HERBERT I MADE DINNER….COME UP AND EAT FOR ONCE! A STORM IS COMING TOO!”
