Lari leaned back against the bleachers. There was a new batch of girls out on the gymn floor, running and kicking at soccer balls, all doing their best to make the team. She looked over the group and mentally sorted them into possible candidates for the team, not so much by their skills, but by other potential attributes - particulary those who seemed tentative, unsure, but trying their damnedest to perform well and impress, even though their talents were at best marginal. It was hard to be team captain, but there were such nice rewards.
She nudged Cindi and asked: "Who is that girl over there - number 8?" Cindi glanced down at the clipboard and told Lari her name, then glancing up she winked for she knew what was going through her friend's mind.
"I think she deserves a try-out. Tell her to meet me in the office after practice." And with that Lari went back to looking over the newbie candidates.
