Hidden within the dark unknown were strange, huddled forms, like the flow of water amid a pitch-black cave. The darkness molded and folded upon itself in an endless cycle, until broken by a single glint of light which sliced through the darkness.
"What... What is this?"
Then, a voice could be heard from the light, which chipped away at the shell of darkness until the light began to spread across the sky. It was the voice of a young man, someone that she knew well but could not recall in her current state of mind.
"Where am I?"
As the light continued to spread, it began to cast light down upon herself as well, the beams of light which struck her reflected a warm, reddish glow. Her eyes glanced down she saw what appeared to be some strange red, translucent material which shaped her hands, arms, and body. She sat amid a pool of this substance, yet at the same time she was not sitting in a pool... She was the pool itself.
"What am I?"
She felt frightened, but at the same time strangely at peace. What was this sensation? She could feel a warmth within her chest, which burned and grew with each passing breath. She could hear the voice once again, speaking to her from the light, calling upon her.

Ruby's eyes slowly fluttered open, the weight of her covers bearing down on her as her skin felt cold and drenched in sweat. She had seen another one of those dreams... She had been having them more recently as of late, but their exact purpose, if there was any, remained a mystery. She slid herself out of bed, her bare feet brushing across the hard wood floor as she shuffled toward her dresser and stripped out of her sweat-dampened pajamas.
Her room was small and almost perfectly square, with only a single closet nearby the door and a window which opened out toward the garden. She lived with the rest of her family and extended family in a small village in the mountains, containing no more than one thousand inhabitants. It was a small fishing and farming village, and with it came the casual, lazy demeanor which coated the landscape like a thick layer of snow. She had only one sibling, an older brother, and both their parents were farmers who spent long hours working in the rice patties.
She paused momentarily to look at herself in the mirror, her right hand reaching up to clasp over her left breast. She had turned seventeen on her last birthday, and it was their custom to choose a husband by the time they turned eighteen. Ruby, however, had little interest in the young men of the village and they in turn took little notice of her. She had long reddish brown hair and a short stature. Her breasts were c-cups at best, and she spent most of her time tending the small herb garden behind the house rather than socializing with others. With a slightly despondent sigh, she stepped toward her closet to change before breakfast. Her brother was likely already awake, but it was her turn to prepare breakfast so she had to hurry along.
Stepping through and closing her door behind her, Ruby made her way down the hall toward the kitchen and began to prepare a simple meal for her brother and herself as their parents had already long since left to tend to the fields. The pleasant scent of bacon and eggs began to waft about the kitchen, setting out two earthenware plates out onto the counter before dividing equal portions for the two of them. If she knew anything about her brother, he was never late for meals.
