Hidden Hearts (Dark and Wing)

Hidden within the dark unknown were strange, huddled forms, like the flow of water amid a pitch-black cave. The darkness molded and folded upon itself in an endless cycle, until broken by a single glint of light which sliced through the darkness.

"What... What is this?"

Then, a voice could be heard from the light, which chipped away at the shell of darkness until the light began to spread across the sky. It was the voice of a young man, someone that she knew well but could not recall in her current state of mind.

"Where am I?"

As the light continued to spread, it began to cast light down upon herself as well, the beams of light which struck her reflected a warm, reddish glow. Her eyes glanced down she saw what appeared to be some strange red, translucent material which shaped her hands, arms, and body. She sat amid a pool of this substance, yet at the same time she was not sitting in a pool... She was the pool itself.

"What am I?"

She felt frightened, but at the same time strangely at peace. What was this sensation? She could feel a warmth within her chest, which burned and grew with each passing breath. She could hear the voice once again, speaking to her from the light, calling upon her.

Ruby's eyes slowly fluttered open, the weight of her covers bearing down on her as her skin felt cold and drenched in sweat. She had seen another one of those dreams... She had been having them more recently as of late, but their exact purpose, if there was any, remained a mystery. She slid herself out of bed, her bare feet brushing across the hard wood floor as she shuffled toward her dresser and stripped out of her sweat-dampened pajamas.

Her room was small and almost perfectly square, with only a single closet nearby the door and a window which opened out toward the garden. She lived with the rest of her family and extended family in a small village in the mountains, containing no more than one thousand inhabitants. It was a small fishing and farming village, and with it came the casual, lazy demeanor which coated the landscape like a thick layer of snow. She had only one sibling, an older brother, and both their parents were farmers who spent long hours working in the rice patties.

She paused momentarily to look at herself in the mirror, her right hand reaching up to clasp over her left breast. She had turned seventeen on her last birthday, and it was their custom to choose a husband by the time they turned eighteen. Ruby, however, had little interest in the young men of the village and they in turn took little notice of her. She had long reddish brown hair and a short stature. Her breasts were c-cups at best, and she spent most of her time tending the small herb garden behind the house rather than socializing with others. With a slightly despondent sigh, she stepped toward her closet to change before breakfast. Her brother was likely already awake, but it was her turn to prepare breakfast so she had to hurry along.

Stepping through and closing her door behind her, Ruby made her way down the hall toward the kitchen and began to prepare a simple meal for her brother and herself as their parents had already long since left to tend to the fields. The pleasant scent of bacon and eggs began to waft about the kitchen, setting out two earthenware plates out onto the counter before dividing equal portions for the two of them. If she knew anything about her brother, he was never late for meals.

Mathew came home early in the morning from an early morning of fishing. Living in a small isolated place like theirs had its advantages and its disadvantages. One advantage was all the free time he had to spend with his younger sister. One disadvantage was that he had to go fishing early in the morning with the other boys. It was cold during the morning, as opposed to the rest of day which was warmer.

He came home from a day of fishing as his sister was cooking breakfast. He made sure to eat breakfast with his sister in the morning, while their parents were already out in the fields. He loved her sisters cooking, and he knew that she would make a good wife one day. She was of the age of acquiring a husband but she didn't seem to be looking for anyone. A fact that he was quite happy about, it meant that she wouldn't have to leave. Of course, he was would claim it is mostly her cooking that he was interested in.

"Good morning, red hair Ruby" Matthew said walking in. He liked to tease her sister about her red hair. Everyone else in their family had black hair, except her. He liked to tease her about it, but he really was envious of her hair color though. He was still dripping wet from his mishap in the lake. When he so that the food was already at the table he didn't even attempt to change out of his clothes. He was a freak like that.

(Love the title)

((Why, thank you))

"Good morning, little wet man," Ruby stuck her tongue out at Matthew as she set down his plate in front of him, "You'll catch a cold if you stay like that, you know, and don't expect me to nurse you back to help like I did when we were younger." The two of them often exchanged little jabs at each other, he about her hair or anti-social habits and she about his rather careless behavior. She never did understand why he went out of his way to pester her about things that he knew she was a bit sore about, but if she had paid a bit more attention she might have realized it was his own way of drawing her attention and creating opportunities for the siblings to interact with each other.

"You should take better care of yourself... I worry about you," Ruby added in a barely audible whisper as she stabbed at her eggs with her fork in a mildly sheepish manner. for some reason, seeing his shirt clinging to his skin like that, soaked to the skin, made her feel uneasy and slightly warm in the cheeks. It was a similar sensation as she had felt in her dream last night... Was it his voice that she had heard? Even if it were, what did that mean? Whatever, its not like such dreams actually meant anything, right?

"Did... Did you catch anything?" Ruby cleared her throat, her eyes conspicuously avoiding directly crossing his as she sat across from him, her legs rubbing together under the table in a nervous manner.

"Little wet man"? I am much bigger than you, he thought. Like a lot bigger. Not that he would use his advantage to hurt her, but calling him little was interesting for him. He didn't mind it of course. A majority of the times, fights with her was his fault. It could be kinda hard to get an introvert like his sister to talk to him sometimes. He was the annoying direct type, but seemingly it never bothered his sister.

"The boys and I caught plenty" he said. "Their are some girls with us sometimes. You should join us sometime" he said almost eagerly looking up a her. One fun part about the water was that it was a rare occasion for even the girls to show a little skin around here. He wanted to see his sister of course...not in a dirty way, of course. He just hadn't seen her in the water before. This is what he had always told himself anyways. Besides, he didn't want to seem a little too eager though. "You could...you know...find a guy or something." He said halfheartly looking up at her.

Suddenly he noticed that she seemed a little...nervous. Was she scared of him? Her eyes were focused straigh down, and she couldn't sit still at all. He was a little worried. Did he do something wrong, was their something wrong with her that wasn't related to him? He stuck his foot in between her legs, preventing her from rubbing them together. "Look at me" he said "is their something wrong?"

"The boys and I caught plenty"

"...That's good to hear," Ruby made a smile, briefly considering his suggestion to go fishing with him next time they went out which quickly vanished upon hearing his next suggestion. Did he really want her to find a guy? She could sense the halfhearted nature of his words, but even so he had never even brought up such a subject to her before. It was a well-known fact that she hardly ever spoke to any boy other than her own brother, but even so she didn't feel depressed about it. She was happy with her brother, even if their interactions were mostly in the form of mild spats, and the mere suggestion felt off-putting.

When he suddenly slid his foot in between her legs, she let out a surprised squeak and glanced up at his face briefly, unable to look him directly in the eyes as her face turned a dark shade of crimson. Why was she feeling this way? Why did it feel so... good to have his foot wedged between her soft thighs? Without thinking she began to rub herself against him slightly, "I... I can't look at you right now... I know what you are saying is just out of kindness and concern, but for some reason I feel uneasy around you today."

Ruby stood up abruptly and began to walk around the table in order to retreat back to the safety of her room so that she could avoid directly confronting her brother. She could feel all sorts of emotions welling up in her at once. Anger, possessiveness, frustration, worry, fear, and fondness all mixed together in her mind into a indecipherable mess which threatened to erupt without warning. There were urges as well, strange urges that she had never felt toward her brother before. What had happened to her? why was she acting this way? She wanted to run away and hide herself from him lest he see her in such a deplorable state.
