Camille lay in bed staring out into the darkness. Her husband was there beside her, snoring loud enough to raise the roof. It was New Year's Eve, the fifteenth anniversary of their wedding day, and instead of celebrating, they had fought, saying ugly, hateful things to one another, shouting in angered voices, not really sure what they were even shouting about. Nothing had been resolved, of course. They just both got tired of the arguing and went on to bed. He slept while she lay there feeling alone.
Quietly slipping out from beneath the bed covers, Cami walked over to the window. She peered out into the night, observing the lights coming from downtown where the New Year's Eve festivities were just getting underway. She use to love the celebrations and parties, the laughter and excitement the night life could bring. Her eyes grew moist as she recalled happier times, when James, her husband, would accompany her to the movies or go out to eat at a fine restaurant together. She finally quit asking him to take her anywhere as it always ended up in a fight. It seemed as though he couldn't be bothered when it came to her feelings or what she was needing or wanting.
"Why should I stay home and feel sorry for myself?" The words were barely above a whisper as she stood there at the window looking out. "If he doesn't want to celebrate our anniversary or help me to ring in the New Year, there's no reason why I can't, is there?"
It took her less than 10 minutes to change, curl her hair, and put on her makeup. She was a woman on a mission: To go out and party like it was....2013! Dressed in a sexy blue dress and high heels, she quietly closed the front door behind her, not bothering to wake James up or to leave him a note letting him know where she was going. She jumped into her car and headed straight for Ned's Tavern.
