The Docherty's were an old and mostly Scottish family, maintaining strong ties to their ancestral lands. The family made it's money through trade, mostly textiles and the ever popular Whiskey. Ronan still maintained a highly successful distillery, maintaining the family fortune. His wife Ceana was active in nature conservancy, doing what she could to protect the world's natural resources. Shortly after the birth of their first child, Arthur, the couple purchased 5 square miles of land and had it declared a nature preserve. It was set in the foothills of a larger mountain range, though because of human development, had been isolated from the mountain range. The land was home to a wide variety of birds and small animals and was even home to a small herd of deer.
Arthur made his living in banking, while his wife Rebecca was chairwoman of several large organizations. They built their 6 bedroom house about 1 mile from the preserve. Unlike his parents, Arthur did not take to nature. His sister Claire, on the other hand, loved spending her youth wandering the preserve, and when she got older, hiking along the Appalachian Trail.
Claire met and married Jason Brennan, a young man of Irish descent, whose parents immigrated to the US shortly before his birth. They became teachers at the local college and spent much of their summers as trail guides along the Appalachian Trail. Their daughter Andrea spent her summers, since age 10, with Arthur and his family. While many thought Claire and Jason were abandoning their daughter, in truth it was what Andrea wanted. Andrea got to enjoy hiking and exploring the nature preserve, as well as spending time with her best friend, her cousin Colin. Colin was the one person Andrea would share everything with, telling him about the first boy that kissed her in 5th grade, the first girl who kissed and groped her in the 6th grade, and how she 'popped' her own cherry with one of her mother's 'toys' she found hidden in the back of a dresser drawer. He was the only person who knew definitively that she was attracted to both boys and girls.
