Luckily for her, the darkness created a great cover for her escape. She could hear the bullets tear into the ground behind her and the soldiers guarding her cell. More like tube. The fluid they filled the large cylinder still clung to her body and made her fur crust and stink. Her nostrils flared as she darted through the open field towards the tall grass where she could stand a chance at escaping. Those hopes were immediately dashed to pieces when the sound of helicopter blades slicing through the air rang in her ears. She flattened them down against the back of her skull and hissed. Those bastards sure were persistent, and well-prepared. She darted into the the tall grass to get rid of the foot chase. Once inside, she pushed off her strong legs and jumped into the air. She covered more distance while jumping, so she could get a good deal away from the footmen before she'd have to deal with the helicopter.

Kani got as far as three jumps into the thick grassland before bullets from the machine gun mounted on the helicopter ripped past her head. She shrieked angrily and began to run through the grass on all fours. She zigzagged every which way to avoid a linear pattern where it would be easy to just sweep through with the machine gun and pierce her a few times.

Her momentum picked up as she continued running, but she was forced to come to a screeching halt when the gun started shooting horizontally in front of her. She dodged the bullets and made a sharp turn, heading in a different direction. The helicopter made a wide swoop to try and catch her again. Just ahead she saw a rock jutting out from the flat plains and made a plan. She ran up the length of the rock and once she reached the paramount, Kani pushed off the rock and spun around in the air. The bullets narrowly missed her again as she flew at them, landing on the window. Her extended claws dug into the metal and she tore down on the window, ripping the glass from the pane and shattering it. Her claws dug into the two pilots' bodies and the helicopter started to go down. She glanced to the ground below and saw lights. Lots of lights.

When the helicopter neared the ground, Kani pushed off it and rolled on the dirt a few feet away from the estimated crash site. She jumped up to her feet and began leaping towards the lights. The explosion behind her caused her wince as her massive ears picked up on the sound.

When she reached the lights, she could see they were from cars. Dozens of them going to and leaving from the city. She hid in the ditch and watched as the people began to gather around and watch the fire from the explosion. They spoke a language she barely understood, but she had no time to learn it. She needed to get farther away from the facility.

Kani crawled into one of the vehicles that was left open and moved to the back. Laying on the back seat, she shivered slightly, feeling her adrenaline slowly ebb. Slowly, she closed her eyes and started to relax until a faint beeping sound brought her senses back up. She checked her left arm and saw a faint, flickering glow. A tracker. Growling, she extended her claws and slashed her arm, destroying the tracker effectively, but causing bleeding from her torn flesh. The car door slammed shut and the vehicle began to move. Kani laid flat and still, hoping the car owner wouldn't check behind him.

She rode in the car until he parked it in front of an apartment building. Sliding out of the back seat, she glanced around at the building. There were a good number of balconies leading into decent-sized apartments. All sorts of aromas wafted from some of the open windows. Kani's eyes scanned the building. There was one apartment with the balcony door open. The curtains waved outside, inviting her to come in and hide. Four storeys up. Kani darted over to the building and began to scale it, using her claws to keep her from sliding down. Within seconds she was level with the open apartment. Reaching over, she grasped the rail and hoisted herself onto the balcony and quietly examined the room inside. It looked dark, but she could see perfectly fine. Kani carefully walked inside the room and sniffed the air.

The couch was just in front of her. The soft cushions looked ideal to rest on. Normally she would have known better, but the running had caused her to become fatigued. Wearily, Kani lowered herself onto the couch and curled up, tucking her tail around her ankles and pressing her ears against her skull and falling asleep.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was a Wednesday, and it had been a relatively long day for Dante, and he was glad when he was finally able to clock off from work. By the time he had finished work, the time was around 10pm. He worked in a large warehouse, and not only had it been a long day for Dante, but it had also been a rather busy day too. The twenty year old had something of a small smile on his face as it finally came time for him to head off home. He wasn’t actually sure what he was going to do when he got home though, but he figured that he would think of something. All he really wanted to do for the time being was to get home, and just relax. He had been at work for a little over twelve hours, and he was feeling rather tired now. Dante said his goodbyes to his workmates, and then after doing so, he proceeded to leave his work. After leaving his work, he made his way out into the parking lot and once out in the parking lot, he walked over to the parking spot where he had left his red and black mustang. He found it hard not to smile as he had walked over to his car. After all, it was his pride and joy. It was something he had saved up a long time to buy, and something he had his eye on for just as long. He felt over the moon when he had first brought it, and he took the best of care of it too. Pulling out the keys from his jacket pocket, Dante unlocked his car, opened the driver side door and climbed inside. After climbing inside, he closed the door and placed the keys in the ignition. Turning the keys in the ignition, the engine roared into life as he started up the car. Just like he normally would though, Dante sat and listened to the sound of the engine for a few minutes. He sat listening to the engine for a little while longer, but then decided that it was about time that he headed home. Turning on the CD player in his car, Dante shifted his car into gear and finally pulled out of his parking spot, and the parking lot soon afterwards.
The journey back to his home had been going just as it normally would. Dante was listening to his music, and he was just enjoying the drive back home. Sure, he knew that it would be a relatively long drive, but he was fine with that. However, just over halfway into his drive home, Dante noticed something strange. As he had been passing by a relatively large field, he had noticed a helicopter that had been flying really low. He couldn’t rally be sure, but it almost looked as if the helicopter may even have been firing something too. Dante shook his head as he had seen this, simply thinking it was his tiredness that was making him see it. ”Geez, I really need to get home.” He muttered to himself as he had continued driving. However, he wasn’t driving for long, especially when he had heard the explosion that had followed not long afterwards. Dante quickly brought his car to a stop, and he looked back in his rear view mirror to see the fireball that had been created by the explosion. Stopping his car, he got out and ran over to join the crowd that had gathered to check out the explosion. Dante had no idea how it had happened, but he was sure he may have known why. He had noticed just how low to the ground the helicopter had been flying, and he figured this must have had something to do with it. After all, what other reason could there be for it? None that he could think of, that was for sure.
He stayed and talked with some of the people in the crowd, asking them if they knew what had happened. When he didn’t get many answers, he left the crowd and jumped back in his car. Of course he was totally unaware that he had an uninvited guest hidden in his car. Dante started up his car again and drove the rest of the way home. The rest of the drive back to his home didn’t really take him that long. It only took him another fifteen minutes before he was finally able to get home. Even when he did finally pull into the parking lot of the apartment building he lived in, he was still thinking about the helicopter explosion he had seen on the way home. That really was the first time he had seen anything like that in real life. Sure, he may have seen plenty of explosions in the movies, but there again, that was the movies. Dante loved movies with explosions in them, but seeing one in real life was something completely different for him. He was still trying to get his head around it as he got out of his car and locked it up.
Once he had locked up his car, he entered the apartment building and he took the elevator up four storeys to his apartment. He yawned as he was travelling up in the elevator, but it didn’t really take too long to reach its designated floor. Dante stepped out of the elevator when the doors opened up in front of him, and he walked down the hallway until he reached his apartment. He pulled his keys out of his pocket as he had approached his door, and after unlocking his door, he stepped inside and closed the door behind him. After walking inside, he removed his jacket that he had on, and he tossed his keys onto the small table he had by the front door. Dante hung up his jacket before heading into the kitchen. Once there, he walked over to the sink, and reached up to the kitchen cabinet just to his right. Pulling it open, he reached inside and pulled out a glass. He stepped in front of the sink and turned on the cold water tap, promptly filling the glass with cold water. As soon as he had filled the glass with cold water, he turned off the tap, closed the kitchen cabinet where he had gotten the glass from, and then he turned and walked from the kitchen. Just as he walked out of the kitchen, he turned off the kitchen light and headed into his living rom.
Dante did think about turning on the living room light, but then he realised that he had the moonlight that was streaming in through the balcony door he had left open. Because of how tired he was feeling, he thought he might watch a bit of television before heading to bed. Dante walked round to his couch, and he had no idea that there was someone sleeping on his couch. He didn’t really notice the fact that there was someone on his couch, and he sat down on the couch, but then he shot straight back up again when he was sure he had sat on something that didn’t feel as if it should be there. He set the glass of water down on the coffee table before he dashed over to the light switch to turn on the light. Upon reaching it, Dante turned on the light in the living room, and then he turned and went straight back over to the couch.
His eyes widened in shock when he saw just what was on his couch. It was unlike anything he had ever seen before. Dante hadn’t even seen anything like it in the movies. ”What the…” He looked down at the creature on his couch with shock on his face. ”Hey you! What are you doing here?” He took a step towards his couch, and then he nudged the creature’s shoulder a few times before stepping back again. ”What are you?” He nudged her again, wanting her to get up. Dante looked towards the balcony door, and he knew how she had gotten in, but that still didn’t answer his question as to why she was there in the first place. ”You can’t stay here…..you have to go.” Dante really didn’t know what to think right now. There was some strange creature on his couch, and he didn’t know what to do about it.
Her ears twitched lightly to the sound of keys jangling, then to doors opening and closing. Kani shifted on the couch quietly and grimaced at her cut arm. At what point did she think that was a good idea? She lifted her arm and began licking her shoulder slowly, cleaning the blood and trying to give herself some relief. Unfortunately, her saliva wasn't sufficient enough to ease her pain. When the lights began to turn on around her, she tucked herself into a ball and held her ears low, glancing around silently. Some one was in the room with her, probably the apartment owner. She would have to kill whoever it was in order to avoid being turned in. While she wanted to avoid murder, she wasn't about to let herself get captured again. Kani laid low and silent, hoping whoever it was in the apartment with her would just go to his or her room and not discover her. Maybe she'd find another place to hide in the mean time.
Sadly, though, her hopes were dashed when she heard the human come closer to her. Kani remained quiet, squeezing her eyes shut and wishing she'd vanish or be invisible, but he sat directly on her. Kani pretended to be asleep, maybe her strange appearance would drive him off. It wouldn't seem so. A low growl rose from her throat and she started to sit up after he shook her, turning on her hip and propping herself up with her two hands and turning her head. The lights flashed on and her pupils shrunk to small slits and she stared at him with wide eyes through her messy hair. Both ears were flattened against her head and her lips curled into a snarl. Her tail whipped around and prepared to strike him, but her cut arm trembled and she took the weight off it and whimpered lightly. Blood and trailed down her fur again and her cuts showed no sign of sealing. A small pool of Kani's blood formed on his couch cushion and stained it, though she hadn't really noticed. She turned away from him again and started to clean her fur again, growling between licks and keeping an eye on her forced host.
Her tail remained up, though, remaining perfectly still and ready to strike should he draw nearer. She was nursing herself at this point and felt vulnerable because of her injury. Kani would fight him back if she had to in order to keep herself from being injured more. He spoke to her and she heard the words, but understood them very little. She would have to learn his language in order to commune. Thankfully, she was created with a brain that would quickly pick up on things. It was like she knew it all along and just had to be reminded. Recalling conversations she heard from the people who made her, Kani whispered, "No." and continued to lick herself, glaring at him and daring him to come near her so she could whip him.
Dante still had no idea who or what was on his couch. He only wished he knew just what the creature was that was on his couch, but he honestly had no idea at all. He had never seen a creature like it, and had no idea why the creature was on his couch. Sure, he knew how the creature had gotten in, but that still didn’t seem to explain why the creature was there. Of course, it also didn’t really help that the creature didn’t seem to understand him very well. Dante came to the conclusion that the creature either didn’t understand him, or the creature was choosing to ignore him. ”Can you understand anything I’m saying?” He asked in a curious tone. He didn’t really know if the creature could understand him, but he was hoping that it could. He was hoping so anyway. Dante looked the creature over, and as he did, he was able to notice the wound on her arm that she was washing. He also noticed how her blood was staining his couch. ”Look, I’m not going to hurt you okay.” He spoke in a calm tone, even though he didn’t really expect her to understand him. Dante wasn’t too sure what he was going to be able to do to get her to understand him if she didn’t understand him just yet.
He was about to take a step towards her when he saw the way in which she had reacted to him. It was clear to him that the creature felt threatened by him. This was made clear to him when the creature flattened her ears against her head, snarled at him and whipped her tail around, preparing to strike at him. As soon as he saw this, he took a step back from her and held his hands out in front of him in a non-threatening gesture, shaking his head. ”I’ve told you that I’m not going to hurt you.” Dante was beginning to think that she really didn’t seem able to understand him, so he wasn’t too sure how he would get the creature to understand what he was saying to her. He knew that he was going to have to figure something out, but first, he knew that he was going to have to figure out what he was going to do with her.
The focus of his attention fell to her wound once more. ”Hmm.” He took a few steps back from her and turned on his heel. Afterwards, he walked from the living room, made his way down the hallway and into the bathroom, which was right at the end of the hall. The bathroom door was open already, so he walked inside and headed over to one of the cabinets that were in the bathroom. Pulling it open, he reached inside and pulled out the first aid kit he had inside. Dante closed up the cabinet before walking back out of the bathroom and back into the living room. He walked back over to the couch, looking back to the creature on his couch. Her wound still seemed to be bleeding, and he saw the way she was still looking at him. He also saw the way her tail was pointing at him, but then he knew that he had to take a chance. Dante took a deep breath before he sat down beside the creature on the couch. He was expecting her to whip him with her tail, and there was something telling him that it was probably going to hurt a lot too. He set the first aid kit down beside him and opened it up. Dante pulled out some gauze, a bandage and also something to clean the wound too. Turning back to the creature, he picked up the bottle of liquid used to clean the wound, and then he also picked up a cotton ball from the first aid kit. He poured some of the liquid onto the cotton ball. Afterwards, he set the bottle down and looked back to the creature. ”This might hurt a little bit.” Of course, he didn’t think she would understand him, but he reached for her wounded arm. Wrapping his hand around her wrist gently, he pulled her arm towards him and then he started to clean the wound. As soon as he had cleaned the wound, he placed the gauze on the wound before wrapping the bandage around it. He made sure the bandage was wrapped tightly around the wound, and then he packed everything back into the first aid kit. Afterwards, he set the first aid kit down on the floor. ”Now, are you going to tell me why you are here in my apartment?” He wasn’t even sure why he was talking to her as he didn’t think she was going to understand him.
Since he didn’t know if she would be able to understand his speech, Dante came up with another way in which he would hopefully be able to communicate with her. Looking back to the coffee table just in front of the couch, Dante reached for the pen and pad of paper that he had left on the coffee table. He picked both of them up and opened up the pad to a clean page. Afterwards, he looked back to the creature and then back to the pad of paper before he wrote on the pad of paper.
You are here in my home. Why are you here in my home? More importantly, what are you? And do you have a name?
Dante didn’t know if the creature would be able to understand him when he spoke to her, but he was only able to hope that she knew how to read and possibly write. Whether she did, he didn’t really know. Turning back to her, he showed her the pad of paper and what he had written; hoping she would be able to understand what he was trying to ask her.
Her ears twitched when he spoke, picking up on the words and trying to figure out what he meant. His tone seemed to have relaxed, so perhaps he wasn't as hostile as he was when he first discovered her. Kani stopped licking herself and stared at him full on, trying to read his body language. She knew raising his hands and backing away was a form of surrender. Was he going to leave her alone? Not wanting to let her guard down, Kani remained still. Humans were deceitful, that much she knew. It was hard to trust them when all she knew were humans that had hidden agendas and secret desires. She watched as he walked away from her and vanish behind the wall. Relief washed through Kani and she settled on the couch, her ears perking up a little and her muscles relaxing. She dropped her tail to the floor and remained rested there. What was she going to do when she recovered? The scientists were sure to send out a task force to hunt her down and if she left, they'd find her easily. She didn't exactly blend in all too well. Kani sighed and sunk into the couch a little more, her tail curled around her feet for comfort.
Her ears flicked up again when she heard him draw nearer and stared at him with wide eyes when he came back. Didn't he just surrender? She knew she couldn't trust these hairless, honourless animals. The kit caught her attention, though. A red cross meant health. She recognized it from when she cut one of the men at the lab and they used that to patch him up. Kani eased up and stared at him, her eyes lit with curiosity. Was he going to help her? Shifting uneasily, Kani moved closer to the human and watched what he was doing. Her nostrils flared at the smell of the liquid he poured onto the cotton. It stunk. As he grabbed her wrist and held it towards him, the fur on the back of her neck bristled and she tensed up. As the liquid seeped into her cuts, she roared, but quickly muffled herself with the back of his couch. The last thing she needed was to be reported and have the special team come knocking before she recovered. In her mind, she connected the words with her pain and she whimpered, "Hurt..." and her ears dropped down slightly. After he bandaged her up, Kani examined her arm. The liquid he used hurt more than the injury itself, but she felt better already having the wound covered.
Kani stared at him blankly while analyzing his words. Here was an apartment? He wanted to know why she was here. He grabbed a paper and wrote out what he was asking. Seeing the words on paper was easier for her to understand. She could read well, having been subjected to printed words than verbal words more often. Kani held the notepad and tilted her head to the side while examining it. She brushed her hair from her face and read the words again. She put the paper down and looked at the man and placed her hand on her chest and said, "Kani," with a tone of uncertainty. She thought that was what he asked in the note. She continued. "I am... a test. Test seven. I am here - hiding." Her English was broken and she found it frustrating. She stared at the pad again, then grabbed it and held it out to him.
"Write, speak. I learn best," she gave him an imploring look, hoping he'd understand what she was trying to get across. As she sat there, sirens blared from outside. Kani jumped, dropping the book and crawled over the couch and hid behind it, covering her ears and staring at the door in anticipation for some one to burst through it. "Scared." Kani whispered, her tail wrapped around her feet.
Dante seemed to be glad when the creature didn’t attack him when he had attempted to treat the wound on her arm. He was glad that she eased up slightly and allowed him to treat her, mainly because he had thought that she may have attacked him with her tail. He could tell that she was certainly wary of him, especially when he thought about the way that she had reacted when she had first seen him. Still, he didn’t really know where she had come from, but he was hoping that he would be able to find out. However, before he could find anything out from her, he had to be sure that he could at least get her to understand him first. Dante didn’t know if she would have understood him when he had written on the notepad and showed it to her, but it certainly didn’t stop him from hoping she would be able to understand him.
A smile soon formed on his face when it appeared as if she did seem to understand him after all. He watched her as she told him her name, even though he noted how uncertain she sounded when she had said it. Sure, her English was broken, but Dante was still able to understand what she was attempting to say to him. He still wasn’t entirely sure just what she was, but the fact she had told him that she was a test of some sort…..well that must have meant that she had been….created. Dante thought this over for a few moments, and the more he thought it over, the more it started to make sense to him. It certainly explained why he had never seen anything like her before. Dante just didn’t really know who would have created her, but more importantly, he didn’t know why either. It also made him wonder what had happened to all of the other tests before her.
He was about to respond to what she had said when he heard the sirens blaring outside. Dante watched Kani as she jumped up and hid behind the couch. Seeing how scared she was caused him to get to his feet. Once he was on his feet, Dante quickly made his way over to the balcony door, and then he pulled it closed. Afterwards, he turned on his heel and darted over to the light switch. It only took him a matter of seconds to get there, and when he did get there, he turned off the light, plunging the whole room into darkness. Dante again turned around and headed back over to the couch where Kani was hiding. He didn’t really know if the blaring sirens had anything to do with her, but he could see that she clearly thought they may have had something to do with her. Either that, or she was just really scared. Even though he didn’t really know what was going on, he was sure that the sirens would just be passing by. Well, he was hoping that they would be passing by anyway, and even if they weren’t passing by, he didn’t think they would stop at his apartment in particular, especially with his lights off. It would have given the impression that he either wasn’t in, or that he was sleeping.
The blaring sirens seemed to be getting louder and louder, and Dante was beginning to think that they were right outside his apartment building. Another ten minutes passed before the blaring sirens appeared to finally move on. Five more minutes passed before Dante could no longer hear them, and when he was sure that they had gone completely, he got back to his feet and walked back over to the light switch. He turned on the lights again before walking back over to the couch. When he got there, he picked up the notepad and pen and moved back around to the back of the couch where Kani still was. Looking down to her, he sat down beside her behind the couch. He turned his attention to her a second later. ”My name is Dante, and I’m not going to hurt you. You should be okay here for now, but who are you hiding from?” He asked in a curious tone. It was only after this that he looked down to the notepad he had on his lap, and he wrote down exactly what he had said to her.
My name is Dante, and I’m not going to hurt you. I don’t know how long you are going to be able to stay here, but as long as you are here, you should be okay. But who are you hiding from?
He showed her the notepad just in case she had trouble understanding what he had said to her. She seemed to understand what he wrote on paper more than what he actually said to her anyway. Still, this was something he was hoping that he would be able to work on. The only thing was that he didn’t know how long he could allow her to stay with him.
As the lights flickered off, Kani's eyes lit up and glowed a faint amber light. Her pupils widened so she could take in more light and see in the dark. She remained still, watching the door and breathing with a bit of panic and shivering. Her body remained tense and ready, the sirens blared in her ears and made them ring, but she wouldn't be distracted. There were no sounds of anyone rushing in through the doors nor shouts from a captain ordering his team to bust down the door. As the sirens went away, so did her anxiety and fear. Eventually, she began to relax again. As the lights turned on, Kani winced and grimaced at the sudden brightness as her eyes quickly adjusted to the change. Once she was able to see again, Kani lifted her head to look at him as he spoke. She picked up on the words a little better that time, familiar with what she read before and what he repeated. Her tail flickered a little, excited that she was picking up on the language a little better so quickly.
She took the pad from him and read what he had written down and nodded as if assuring him she understood. Kani paused at the last sentence and read it over a few times before her ears dropped again and she handed him the pad and turned from him. "My maker..." She whispered solemnly. Kani thought a moment. Since he discovered her here, Dante had done nothing but help her and be kind. Kani knew she could trust him, although she'd still be wary of him in case he decided he had had enough of his guest. Her ears lifted and she moved closer to him on her hands and knees, but stopped an appropriate distance from him. "I trust Dante. Dante is... good. I am... umm..." Her mind flashed back to her memories at the lab as she tried to find a word to convey her gratitude. Nothing came to mind, unfortunately, since the world she was in was a thankless world for the most part.
On situation stood out in her mind. She remembered seeing a man bow to the other and shake his hand repeatedly with a big smile on his face. He seemed excited. Kani took that memory and figured it was the best action. She dropped her head and bowed to him, her ears touching the floor as she did. She hoped this made sense to him and didn't just look horribly strange.
There were still so many questions that Dante wanted to ask Kani. The only problem was the fact he didn’t really know if she would know all of the answers, and even if she did, he didn’t know if she would be willing to answer him. Still, it didn’t stop him from hoping. After all, he had come to the conclusion that he was going to need to find out all he could about her if she was going to be spending some time with him. Dante was already beginning to get the idea that chucking her out wouldn’t be the best of things to do, but there were still a lot of things he needed to be able to understand about her.
He watched her with curiosity as she watched him speak, and then read the pad that she had taken from him. The smile on his face seemed to widen as she nodded her head to assure him that she seemed to understand what he was trying to say to her. Dante heard her whisper something, but he couldn’t quite be sure what it was. However, he was glad when she went on to tell him that she trusted him. Even though he wasn’t quite sure what she was, Dante felt as if he was also able to trust her. Sure, she may have crept into his apartment, but he was sure she had a good reason for that. Well, he was hoping she had a good reason for that. He did wonder what she was doing as she had gotten up onto her hands and knees and moved in front of him. Dante laughed a little bit when he saw the way she had dropped her head, bowing to him. He knew what she was trying to say to him though, and he stopped laughing a second or so later. As he stopped laughing, he picked up the notepad and pen, and he wrote on it again.
You are thankful. That is what you are trying to say?
He lightly tapped her on her shoulder so she would raise her head, and he handed her the notepad soon afterwards. Dante waited for her to look back at him again before speaking. ”There is still so much I must ask you….Kani.” He spoke in a soft yet serious tone as he had said this to her. ”Are you feeling…hungry?” He asked in a curious tone. He turned his attention back towards the notepad he had handed to her not so long ago, and then he took the pad from her once more to write in it again.
Are you feeling hungry? Can I get you anything to eat or drink? What kind of food and drink are you able to have Kani?
Dante handed her back the notepad, and he was sure she would be able to understand him more now, mainly because she seemed to be able to understand him more and more as time went by. This was of course a good thing, or so he thought it was. It made Dante think that it wouldn’t be too long until she would finally be able to properly understand him. As he was thinking about her being able to understand him, there were a few other things that were racing through his mind. Not only was he curious as to where she had come from, but he was also wondering just what he was going to do with her when he would have to go to work. He honestly had no idea if he would be able to trust her in his apartment on her own, but then at the same time, he also knew that taking her with him to work was out of the question completely. Still, Dante knew that he had to figure something out. Maybe he would have to call in sick just so he could figure out what he was going to do. He didn’t really know just yet.
Kani lifted his head when he tapped her and she read the notepad. Thankful seemed to fit what she felt. She pointed to the word once and nodded eagerly, a confident smile on her face. At least he could somewhat understand her and her limited language. Her tail flicked and she began to relax more around Dante. He seemed to want to help her, and she was grateful for that. Kani glanced up to him, her ears twitching at her name. She watched his lips move and understood what he said. He wanted to ask her things. Kani nodded to him and said, "I will answer." Kani watched as he spoke and wrote down the questions. She read them over and her eyes lit up, her tail began to thump against the floor. She didn't know the food name, but she knew what it looked like. Snatching the notepad from him and the pen and quickly drew on the piece of paper. She held it away and examined it, tilting her head from side to side, then she glanced around the apartment. Standing up, Kani walked to the kitchen and found a red marker and scribbled on the notepad.
She eagerly walked back to him, sitting down and curling her tail around her again and handed him the notepad. On it, she had drawn an apple, an actual chicken, and a glass with a wavy line at the top. There were details in the drawings that most people wouldn't include for such a quick sketch, but Kani included them with ease, assuming he wouldn't understand what they were without the details. She pointed to the glass and said, "Milk." assuming he would have thought it was water. Not that she didn't like water, she just wanted milk. Kani sat there, watching him with eager anticipation. The people at the lab always gave her different foods to try and see what she liked. She had a preference to meat, but sweet apples were always welcome.
As she sat there, she began thinking of ways she could learn how to communicate better. Kani recalled the lessons they had in trying to teach her how to fight, but never how to speak. When she spoke for the first time, the scientists grew angry and she was sent away and punished, thus ending her desire to learn how to speak. Kani had avoided it as best she could, but she couldn't help but learn here and there a few things. One memory stuck out in her mind where the TV was on in the room she was held in and she could hear the voices and read text on the screen. Her ears perked up immediately and she gasped and glanced around the room, spotting the TV. Kani jumped over the couch and the coffee table and knelt beside it and examined the TV, trying to find how to turn it on. "Umm..." She said while glancing at him. She wasn't sure how to explain it to him. She stared helplessly while trying to find the words to describe what she wanted.
Dante did seem genuinely glad that Kani was beginning to understand him a little bit better. It made him think that maybe it wouldn’t be too long before she would be able to understand him properly. Give or take a few days, and he was sure he would be able to talk to her just like any other person. Well, that was his theory anyway, especially when he thought about how quickly she seemed to be picking up on everything he was saying to her. He had also noticed the way she had been watching his lips movements, and the answer she gave soon afterwards. Dante thought of this as being a good thing. Sure, she may not have been able to understand everything he was saying to her, but the fact she was able to lip read was a bonus in his eyes. He smiled and nodded his head as she told him how she would answer any questions that he would have for her. Dante remained sitting on the floor by the couch as Kani had taken the notepad from him and started drawing on it. He wasn’t quite sure what she was drawing on it, and he tilted his head in confusion when she had gotten up and disappeared into the kitchen. When she came back and handed him the notepad, he studied what she had drawn, and he could see what she wanted to eat and drink. What he didn’t understand was what she had drawn in the glass. At least he didn’t understand until she told him that it was milk she wanted.
He was about to get up and head into the kitchen to get what she wanted to eat, but then he saw her leap over the couch and coffee table. This alone surprised him, and his eyes widened in shock. After all, the couch wasn’t exactly what most would call small, and neither was the coffee table, yet here she was, and she had managed to leap clear over both of them. Dante didn’t say anything, but he watched her kneeling beside the television and examining it. When he could see what she was trying to do, his lips curled up into a smile as he walked around the couch. Dante set the notepad down on the coffee table before making his way over to Kani and the television. He didn’t really need to ask her any questions to know what it was she wanted to do, so he found the power button on the television, and he pressed it to turn on the television. Dante didn’t really know what she wanted to watch, but it was clear she did want to watch the television. He tapped her on her shoulder so she would look back to him, and then he smiled a little bit. ”Is that any better?” He asked in a curious tone.
Soon after asking this, he got back to his feet and turned on his heel. Afterwards, he headed out of the living room and into the kitchen, so he could get what Kani had wanted to eat. The first thing he did was to pick up an apple that was resting in a bowl of fruit that was in the middle of the kitchen table. He set the apple down on the kitchen counter, and then he turned and walked over to the fridge. Once there, he pulled it open and looked inside. It didn’t really take him too long to find what he needed to pull out of the fridge. First, he pulled out the bottle of milk that was in the fridge, and then his lips curled up into more of a smile as he saw some cold chicken that was in the fridge. Dante pulled out the cold chicken, setting it down on the kitchen counter along with the milk. He closed up the fridge door, and then he walked over to a kitchen cabinet. Dante pulled open the kitchen cabinet door and reached inside for a plate that was inside. He pulled out the plate and then closed up the kitchen cabinet, and then before he returned to the kitchen counter with the milk and chicken, he picked up a clean glass. Now, with both the plate and glass in hand, he walked back over to the counter. He set both the glass and plate down once he got there, and he put the chicken on the plate and poured out a glass of cold milk. After doing so, he put the milk back into the fridge. He picked up the glass and plate, and then he turned to head back into the living room, picking up the apple along the way.
He made it back into the living room, and then he walked over to the coffee table in the room. When he got there, he set the plate and glass of milk down on the coffee table, and then he set the apple down beside the plate. ”Kani…food.” He didn’t really say anything else to her, thinking that it would be enough for her to understand. Well, he was hoping that it would be enough for her to understand anyway.
((I'm a bit of an idiot and realized I used the wrong image for my character. xD Wowwww. I changed it.))
As the television turned on, Kani quickly moved over to watch the screen, but she frowned slightly and nodded. If the captions were up, she'd be able to understand it better, but Kani decided not to bother him more and settled down to watch. Moving over to the couch, Kani sat down and glanced to where her blood had stained it. Her ears dropped and Kani turned to Dante to see if he was looking, but when she saw he wasn't, she turned back and watched the screen. If she could just spend a while lip-reading and listening then she'd have the language down perfectly. Kani stared at the screen, reading lips and focusing on the language as she slowly understood what was being said. It was on the news. Kani stared at it as the news reporter covered the various global situations and covered the wars and other events. The news switched to the entertainment portion shortly after and Kani tilted her head to the side watching the people dressed in fabulous clothing. Glancing down, she noticed she was completely unclothed. She turned her head and looked at Dante and saw him in clothes as well. Her brows furrowed and she wondered if she was the odd one out. Well, more than what she already was.
Kani stared intently at the screen, barely blinking. Her nose twitched to the smell of the chicken, but she remained fixated upon the television. It wasn't until the plate, cup, and apple were placed before her that she slowly tore her eyes from the screen to glance down at them. A bright smile crossed her features and she glanced between the food and Dante. Her tail thumped happily on the couch and she turned to him and said. "Thank you, Dante." She reached over and grabbed the chicken and began to nibble on it while staring intently on the screen again, her ears perked upwards as she listened to what they were saying. The news instantly changed from entertainment to the crash scene. Helicopters circled the burning wreckage and Kani's ears dropped slightly. A police officer being interrogated by the news reporter gave vague details, as usual, and gave no indication as to what exactly went on. Kani frowned and furrowed her brows, though she became pensive when the laboratory's headquarters she escaped from came on screen. Her floor was deep underground and it took a long, long time for her to escape without being captured.
Sighing, Kani finished off the chicken, then used her tail to grab the cup of milk and took the cup from it and drank it. With a satisfied exhale, Kani gently replaced the cup and started on the apple. After a bit, Kani glanced to Dante and swallowed the bit of apple in her mouth and asked hesitantly, "Is... is it bad I wear nothing?" Her ears drooped as she glanced to his clothes, then back to her body. While it was covered in fur, she still felt it was inappropriate. Kani's ability to pick up on the language fast was becoming apparent. She could listen to the news and not need to focus as hard to understand, but there were still large gaps between her understanding of the language she'd have to overcome yet.
((It's okay. ^^ Don't worry about it. ^^))
After he had sat back down on the couch after turning on the television, he turned his attention towards the blood stained cushion on his couch. ”Hmm, I’m going to have to do something about that.” He lightly tapped his chin in thought as to how he was going to clean the cushion properly. He didn’t really think that it was going to be too tough to get it cleaned, but at the same time, he also knew that it was something that was going to have to wait until later. Dante sat and watched Kani as she was watching the television. He could see the way she was lip reading just about everything that was being said on the television. It did make him wonder just how quickly she would be able to pick up on what was being said. She had been able to pick up on what was being said quite quickly so far. When he noticed how quickly she seemed able to pick up on the language, it did make him wonder how quickly she would be able to pick up on other things. He didn’t know right now, but he was sure that he would get to find out at some point.
Dante didn’t really pay too much attention to the news that was on the television. Well, he didn’t really pay any attention to it until news of the helicopter explosion had come on. When this came on, he picked up the television remote and turned up the volume of the television. After turning up the volume, he turned on the subtitles so that Kani would be able to read what was being said as well as lip reading. He thought it might make it easier for understand what was being said. He leaned forward on the couch, looking towards the television as everything was being explained. Dante glanced in Kani’s direction, and he saw the way she had reacted to the news. This made him wonder if she may have known anything about the accident. ”Kani….do you know anything about what happened there? I witnessed the explosion, but I have no idea what caused it.” Of course, he wasn’t really expecting her to know what may or may not have happened, but he didn’t think it would hurt to ask.
Dante watched her as she ate the food he had brought in for her, and he smiled a little bit as she finished it soon afterwards. However, he did stop to think about her question about clothes. Dante lightly cupped his chin in his hand and looked over in Kani’s direction, studying her for a few moments. His eyes met with hers again. ”Hmm, well I don’t know if it’s bad that you wear nothing Kani.” He paused for a moment soon afterwards. ”Your appearance is significantly different to that of a human, so I’m not too sure if you would need clothes.” His eyes studied her body one more time as he processed a few more thoughts. ”However, I would have no problem in finding you out some old clothes if you wish. I am sure that I should have something that will fit you.” He flashed her a small smile, and then turned his attention back towards the bloody cushion beside him. Dante got back to his feet, picking up the bloody cushion, and then he turned on his heel and made his way back into the kitchen. Dante walked over to the washing machine in his kitchen, opened up the door and chucked the bloody cushion inside. Afterwards, he put in some detergent, and then he turned on the washing machine. As soon as he had turned on the washing machine, he turned around and walked back into the living room. Once he was back in the living room, he sat back down on the couch. ”So Kani, would you like me to find you out some old clothes?” He asked with a small smile on his face.
Kani watched him take the cushion off and she frowned again. "I'm sorry..." She said sadly. Kani genuinely meant it. Maybe she could fix it if she could study chemicals. She decided to let it go and see if the washer did its job.
"I saw it too," she said simply. Kani couldn't lie to him, but she didn't want to tell the whole truth. She continued staring at the screen, watching the report and reading the words. So far, there was no mention of something escaping. Maybe the laboratory was keeping that secret so they wouldn't be investigated. A soft sigh escaped her lips and she glanced out the window. She felt compelled to tell him more, but she knew it would worry him and he would kick her out. After the kindness he showed, she didn't have the heart to try and force him to let her stay. Her attention returned to the television as more interviews happened. If he had stayed behind, he would have been interviewed and on the screen. She wondered what he would say.
Her attention turned to him when he explained clothing and how it wasn't a bad thing she wasn't wearing clothes. Kani fidgeted a bit before nodding and said. "Yes, please." She didn't want him to feel uncomfortable, but at the same time, she was slowly starting to feel that way. The television began playing commercials about make up and diets and she cocked her head to the side while arching a brow. Why would people put on paint to make themselves look different? Kani watched the commercials a while longer before turning away and starting to walk around the apartment. She dragged her hand across the surfaces and examined them a little before walking on to the next surface and touching it.
"Is this your home? Do you live alone?" Kani asked slowly while stopping in the kitchen and staring at the fridge. That's where the food was, but she wasn't hungry anymore. The news took away her appetite. She turned around and glanced down the hallway where he had vanished down and looked at the doors, wondering where they went. Walking down the corridor, she opened the first door to the bathroom and stared at it. They had trained her to use it and she was forced to frequently shower. While most would hate showers, she enjoyed them. It was her alone time, the time where she could think and not be ordered to do something. They left her alone when she was in the shower because they knew she would do what she was supposed to without having to be supervised. Kani went to the next room and paused before it, sniffing a little. It smelled different in that room.
Dante wasn’t too sure just how long the cushion was going to take to wash, but that wasn’t really a priority to him right now. He just really wanted to find out more about Kani and the accident that was being shown on the news. Of course, he didn’t really think that it would have been long before the helicopter crash would have gotten onto the news anyway. Dante was just having trouble figuring out what had caused the helicopter to crash in the first place. Sure, he had noticed that the helicopter had been flying extremely low, but he was just unable to figure out why the helicopter had been flying so low. After all, helicopters were never really supposed to fly that low. Well, he didn’t think they were anyway.
There had been a somewhat surprised look on his face as Kani had revealed that she had also seen the explosion. Dante turned in her direction as she had told him this, and he raised an eyebrow. ”You were there too?” He asked in a curious tone. Dante didn’t recall seeing her there at the scene of the explosion, but there again, it had been dark, so maybe she had been there. Maybe she had been there, but he had missed her, due to the fact his attention had been on the scene of the explosion. ”I never saw you there at the scene. Where were you? Were you amongst the crowd at the scene of the explosion?” He asked, still curious. It was at this point that he realised she may not have been at the scene of the explosion, but she may just have seen the explosion from a distance. Still, that didn’t really explain how she had managed to get to his home. ”I was on my way home from work when I saw the explosion. I stopped my car, and then I got out to take a look, just because it was something I hadn’t expected to see. I stuck around for a few minutes, but then I got back in my car and drove back here. That was when I found you. When I got back here.”
He remained in the living room as she had gotten up to start taking a look around his home. Dante nodded his head to both of her questions that she had asked him, but then he realised that she wasn’t going to see him nodding his head since she was out of sight. He looked back over his shoulder soon afterwards. ”Yes, this is my home, and I do live here alone. I’ve been living here for a few years now. It’s not too bad around here, but you just need to get used to it really.” He got to his feet a second or so later, and then he walked out of the living room and down the hallway. Dante saw her standing outside his bedroom door, and he smiled a little bit before walking up to her. He stopped just beside her, and then he opened up the door and pushed it open. Afterwards, he looked back to her once more. ”This here is my bedroom.” He smiled to her before he stepped inside. ”Come on. Come and take a look.” With that said, he walked further into his bedroom, and then he moved over towards the closet in his room. When he got there, he pulled open the closet door and walked inside. Dante started to look for some clothes that may have been able to fit Kani. He was looking for at least five minutes before he was finally able to find something. In the end, he pulled out a light blue t-shirt that didn’t fit him, and he also pulled out a pair of fairly long white shorts that would have stopped just at her knees. With the clothes in hand, he turned and walked back out of the closet. Once he was out of the closet, he walked back over to Kani and handed her the clothes he had found for her. ”I’m not sure what you might think of these, but these should fit you for now.” He smiled again as he had handed her the clothes. ”Anyway, you can sleep in here with me tonight. I do have a spare room, but that needs sorting out. Besides, there should be more than enough room for you in my bed. It’s big enough after all, and I don’t really expect you to sleep on the floor either.”
"I uhh..." She faltered answering him about her whereabouts. Looking back on the events, she recognized the smell in the car with him. She had, through some miracle, been taken to his apartment in his car. Kani felt that this information would be too suspicious for him to know, so she decided to bend the truth a little again. "I saw it take off and fly low right from the start. It picked up, but I think something happened because it made a loud boom and started to fly really low. I ran away because the boom scared me." She dropped her ears and glanced away from him, not able to stare at him as she lied. Shame filled her soul and she wanted so desperately to tell him the truth, but for her own survival, she kept it quiet.
As he spoke with humility about his home, Kani turned to him and smiled sadly and said. "It is better than my old home." As he walked beside her, she glanced over to him, noticing how tall he really was compared to her. The tip of her head just came to his nose. She lifted her ears up and noticed she was taller than him if she did that. A content smile came across her face and she kept her ears up. Her nose flared when the door opened and a whole batch of new scents came to her. Kani walked into the room and began to examine everything, her nose twitching every now and then as she explored. She walked over to his bed and pushed down on it and a low rumbled came from her throat. "It's soft..." She murmured while crawling onto it and kneeling down. Her tail curled around her and she smiled while sitting at the foot of the bed. It was then that he handed her the clothes and she slipped them on. The shirt was a little baggy and the shorts were noticeably more baggier, but at least they weren't clinging to her fur and rubbing it the wrong way.
When offered to sleep on the bed, her tail thumped and she turned to him with bright eyes and a smile. "I can sleep on this?" She asked excitedly. Kani got on her hands and knees and crawled to the front of the bed and laid her head down on the pillow and closed her eyes. She began to purr again and nuzzled her face into the feathered sack. "This is softer than the bed." She stated contentedly. Kani turned her head, her hair now strewn about her face from the friction and rubbing she was doing, and her eyes flickered open and watched Dante with a slightly bemused gleam in her eyes. "You are very kind, Dante. I hope I am not a... err...." Kani sat up and tried to think of the word, her brows furrowing and her lips frowning as she racked her mind for the word. "A problem." She said conclusively, feeling that word was the best to use to describe herself. Of course she knew she was an inconvenience. She would always be one wherever she went, but at least she could try and help him out if he would need it, even with her limited knowledge.
Of course Dante had no reason to even consider the possibility that Kani had managed to get to his apartment after climbing into his car. He had no idea that she had climbed into his car when he had stopped to check out the explosion. Dante also felt as if he had no reason to doubt what she was saying to him about how she had managed to come to be at the scene of the explosion. He thought about what she had said for all but a couple of moments before he nodded his head to her. ”Okay, well I can understand how you would have been scared by that explosion.” He spoke in a soft, yet friendly tone as he had said this to her. ”I still can’t seem to figure out why that helicopter was flying so low. I mean, I did see it flying low as I was passing by. First, I thought nothing of it….even if I did think of it as being strange. I was just going to continue on my way home, but then I heard an explosion. That was when I stopped and got out to have a look. I can only assume that the helicopter must have hit something where it was flying so low. Maybe it hit some pylons or something, I really don’t know.” He shrugged his shoulders, as he really had no idea what had caused the helicopter to crash. There again, he didn’t really expect her to know either. Still, he was sure that the facts would come out eventually.
When she had mentioned that his home was better than her last home, it did make Dante wonder just where she had come from. He had seen the sad smile on her face as she had told him this, so it did make him think she couldn’t have liked her previous home as much. As he had been standing beside her, just before he entered his room, he noticed just how tall she seemed to become when her ears were standing up. He smiled a little bit after he had entered his room with her, and after he had gotten some spare clothes out of his closet for her, he waited for her to put them on to see how they fit her. When he saw them on her, he laughed a little bit. ”Well it looks like they do fit you after all.” His smile widened a little bit as he moved over to his bed. Once at his bed, he sat down on the edge of the bed as Kani had sat down at the foot of his bed. ”Those clothes aren’t too big for you, are they Kani?” He asked in a somewhat curious tone. ”Because if they are, then I don’t mind trying to find out some that might not be as big on you. However, if those are okay for you, then I will search out some more clothes for you tomorrow.” He shuffled back a little bit on his bed as he had said this to her. ”I’m going to call in sick tomorrow, just so I don’t have to go into work. After all, I need to figure out what I’m going to do with you.” He paused for a moment after having said this to her. When he realised how it had sounded, he quickly cupped a hand over his mouth, letting it drop a few seconds later. ”Don’t worry as I’m not going to throw you out on the streets. I get the feeling you wouldn’t be safe out on the streets, but if I’m not at work tomorrow, then it will give me a chance to figure out what I can do with you when I do have to go back to work.” He was hoping that she would be able to understand him, but he really didn’t know if she would or not. Sure, she was able to understand what he was saying to her, but he just didn’t know if she would understand the meaning of what he was trying to say.
The smile on his face only seemed to widen some more as he saw her reaction to being allowed to sleep in his bed with him. He did shake his head when she had said she hoped she wasn’t a problem. ”You seem very nice yourself Kani, and of course you’re not a problem.” He spoke in a soft tone, smiling as he did so, and then he moved further up his bed and towards his pillow. After moving up the bed, he looked back to Kani and pulled back the blanket a little bit. ”Kani, you don’t have to sleep on the bed if you don’t want to.” He smiled. ”It’s usually much more comfortable….and also a lot warmer if you sleep underneath the blankets.” Just to show her what he meant, he swung his legs up and onto the bed, sliding them underneath the blankets. After doing so, he scooted down a little bit until he was able to rest his head on his pillow. With his head on his pillow, he pulled the blankets over him and up to his shoulders. As he did this, he looked back to Kani. ”Like this.” Dante smiled a little bit, but he didn’t know if she had slept underneath blankets before. It was why he thought he would show her now. As soon as he had shown her, he sat back up in the bed, looking back to her once more. ”You try, and see what you think.” It was only after this that he thought to ask her about where she was from. Dante took a deep breath before he thought to ask. ”Kani, can you tell me anything about where you are from? Or don’t you know too much about the place you are from? Of course, you don’t have to tell me anything if you don’t want to. I would understand.”
Kani kept her mouth shut the whole time, knowing if she opened it then she would reveal the truth, and she couldn't do that. Not yet. Maybe when she could understand him better and trust him more she would reveal the dark past she had, but Kani needed safety and security first, or at least a place to go to should he kick her out. When he asked her about the clothes, she relaxed a little and nodded saying, "These are fine for me. If they are too close to me then it bothers my fur." Kani's ears flicked a little as he mentioned calling in sick. "Are you unwell? Do you need to be helped?" Kani asked with concern. She was no doctor, but she didn't want to do nothing if he wasn't feeling good. Kani had no idea about the first thing of taking care of humans, as she was sure he had no idea as to how to take care of animal-like science experiments.
Watching him curiously, Kani shifted a bit as he slid under the covers, unsure as to how it would feel against her fur. The bed and pillows were soft, so maybe laying under the blankets would be nice as well. She wanted to sleep on the bed, it was far better than the floor or being forced to stand while she slept. Kani stood up from the bed and pulled the covers up and slid in between the sheets. Her pupils dilated and she began to purr happily while settling down in the bed. She faced Dante and curled up into a ball, her tail draping over his feet lightly. "Noooo," she replied. "I like the bed. The blankets are warm. It feels good." She closed her eyes and smiled, nuzzling her head into the pillow and dropping her ears back so they weren't in his way. Kani heaved a contented sigh as she prepared to drift off to sleep.
Her eyes opened when he asked about her life. They glowed in the lack of light in the room and from the angle of the moon shining in. Swallowing a little, Kani spoke slowly, "The rooms are all the same. White. Computers. Men. Lots of men. They don't like me, I think. They treated me like an animal; a monster. They would feed me little and make me work hard. I remember when I was bad, I was put in a... uhh," Kani glanced around the room until she gave up looking for a descriptive item. "A tall circle with glass. Very small... They put me there and made me stand. They said I was for a test. I wasn't meant to..." Her ears dropped lower and she stared at the pillow beside her face, searching for the ability to tell him the story, but every time she tried to think about it, she felt morose. Her mind replayed the memories she had of the lab she was created in. It was such a shock to be out of that place and in a home where she was treated, offered a bed to sleep on, and even given an apple. She never got an apple unless she did exceptionally well, so asking for one and receiving it was astounding.
Kani glanced back to Dante with a more serious expression and said, "I am alive. I am not human, but I feel human things," she spoke as if she were trying to convince herself that escaping from the lab was the right thing to do, to release herself upon the world was an acceptable action and she would not, should not, be punished for it. After a moment, Kani blinked twice and asked. "Am I an animal? Do you think I'm a monster?" She stared into his eyes with worry, wondering if he would think she were a viscous beast.
It didn’t really take Dante too long to think over what Kani had asked him. Of course, he knew that he wasn’t sick, but he did think that it was probably something that he was going to have to explain to her. There was a small smile on his face as he looked back to her. ”Oh no, I’m not sick or unwell.” He said with a shake of his head. ”You see, I am expected to go into work tomorrow, and since tomorrow isn’t one of my scheduled days off, I could get into trouble if I don’t go in tomorrow without an explanation.” He paused for a moment, just to let what he was saying sink in. He was hoping that there was some of it that was making sense to her, but he figured he would just explain it to her some more if it didn’t. ”Basically, if I call my work tomorrow and say that I am sick, then I won’t get into any trouble for not going into work. It might also give me time to figure out what you can do when I have to go back to work. I was thinking of taking you with me, but I just don’t think that would be a good idea, so I’m going to call in sick at work tomorrow so I can think it over.” He still wasn’t too sure what he was going to do, but he was hoping that he might be able to come up with something that he could do the next day. He was hoping so anyway.
Since he didn’t know what her previous home was like, Dante was curious to see what Kani would think about getting underneath his blankets. There was a small smile on his face as he saw her reaction as she had gotten underneath the blankets. From what he could tell, it looked as if she liked the feeling of it. As she had curled up into a ball, Dante had wondered what he was feeling draping over his feet. It took him a few moments to realise that it was probably Kani’s tail that he was feeling. ”Well I’m glad you like it Kani. These blankets should be able to keep you warm all through the night, so you’re not going to have to worry about feeling cold and uncomfortable.” Of course, he didn’t know if this was something that she may have had to worry about before, but Dante did know one thing. He did know that it wasn’t really something she would have to worry about as long as she was there with him.
When she had reopened her eyes, Dante noticed the way they seemed to glow due to the lack of light that was in the room. This, he had to admit was quite impressive. However, Dante sat and listened to Kani as she spoke and told him of her previous home. He sat and listened intently as she was speaking, and as she spoke, he couldn’t help but feel really bad for her. Wherever she had come from, it sounded as if she had been treated pretty badly. Still, no matter how bad her previous home sounded, Dante still had no idea where she had come from. It did sound like she may have come from a laboratory of some sort. Well, that was what it sounded like anyway. Dante waited for her to finish speaking before he responded to what she had said. ”The place you are from, it really doesn’t sound very nice. From what you are telling me though, it sounds as if you may have come from some sort of laboratory. I can’t be too sure though.” He had a thoughtful expression on his face for a moment. ”It sounds as if they were very nasty to you. They treated you in ways you shouldn’t be treated. Making you sleep standing up is just plain cruel, but don’t worry as I’m not going to make you sleep standing up. You will be able to sleep in this bed, and I am going to be sure to feed you too. As for work, I’m not going to expect you to do anything like that.” He had a smile on his face as he was being completely genuine. Dante didn’t really know where she was from, but he definitely didn’t agree with the way in which she had been treated.
He turned to face her in the bed, seeing the serious expression on her face as she had asked him if he thought she was an animal or a monster. Dante quickly shook his head in response to her question. ”No, of course I don’t think you’re an animal or a monster Kani.” He spoke in a soft tone as he placed a gentle hand on her shoulder. ”It is true that you most definitely are different, but that does not make you an animal or a monster.” He paused for a moment before a small smile crossed his face. ”If anything, I would say that makes you one of a kind. It makes you unique, and that’s a good thing, it really is.” He tried to reassure her that being different really wasn’t as bad as she thought it might be. Sure, he didn’t know what other people might think about her, but right now, he didn’t care for the opinion of others. ”There’s never anything wrong with being different Kani. Just know that you’re not an animal or a monster okay, and you shouldn’t let anyone say you are either.”
Kani tilted her head to the side and blinked a few times. He was giving up a work day to help her? She didn't put it together quite well, but it seemed like a big deal if he was going to pretend to be sick, especially if he would get in trouble if he didn't pretend. While she did note he was lying, as all humans did, she knew it was because he wanted to help her. Her mind couldn't quite piece together why he would want to help her, but she didn't raise the question, worrying what the answer might be, or might not be. Kani felt differently towards Dante. He was the first one to show her kindness in a very long time. The last one to show any sort of kindness was withdrawn from her life, like everything else was. She sat there, watching him speak and catching every word and understanding them. Every now and then she'd glance up from his lips to stare into his eyes before having to look back down and lip read again. There were very few words she didn't understand by then, and she knew she'd have to make it up to him for teaching her.
When he spoke of the lab, Kani's ears dropped and she nodded, agreeing with him that she did live in a horrible place. Once he finished, Kani looked up to him and said. "I can work, though. I can help around here so I am not a burden. I would feel... guilty if you did all that for me for nothing in return." Kani stared him in the eye as she spoke, her pride and sense of duty was stronger than her desire to simply survive. While she'd have to learn how to work in a more hospitable environment and possibly not train, she figured she'd catch on as easily as she has with learning the language. While she knew she couldn't get a job, perhaps something around the house could be done. Her mind flickered back to the cushion she ruined. Cleaning, maybe, or cooking even. The possibilities flowed through her mind until he spoke about her worries of being a monster.
She flinched slightly when he touched her, but quickly got over the subconscious fear of being touched and watched as he spoke with wide, surprised eyes. He didn't think she was a monster nor an animal. She was different; unique, even. Kani's ears raised and lowered a bit as she struggled between emotions she wasn't familiar with. When he finished speaking, she stared at him with confusion swirling inside her. Kani couldn't place where exactly she was getting these emotions from, but she knew part of her knew them and wanted her to express them, but she never learned how. Kani sat up, causing his hand to slide down her arm and she stared at him a moment as she tried to recall a way to adequately express herself. She gave up before long with her mental search and decided upon instincts. Slowly, she reached her hand over him and placed it on his back. Timidly, Kani moved closer to him, faltering a moment before resting her cheek against his and sliding the other arm under him and embracing him. A small tremble ran down her body and she curled her tail around his ankle and she nuzzled against him, her ears dropping a little. She wasn't sure if that was the proper way to show her appreciation, but she decided to speak as well, to possibly explain why she held in that way. "Th-Thank you, Dante. That makes me feel... Happy. Very happy." Her lips curled into a smile and she nuzzled her cheek against him again, feeling that this was the perfect way to show her emotion.
He had seen the look on her face when he had told her that he was going to get a day off work to help her out. A small smile formed on his face as he had seen the look that had been on her face, so he thought he would explain it to her a little better. ”You are probably wondering why I want to take a day off work tomorrow, aren’t you Kani.” He shifted a little bit on the bed before he spoke again. ”I really do want to help you. After all, not all humans are as bad as the humans you must have been raised around. Besides, it wouldn’t be right of me if I didn’t do something to help you. I will admit that there are still some things we need to figure about you, but like I said before, I really do want to do all that I can to help you.” He smiled and nodded his head, speaking to her in a genuine tone. After all, he did mean just about every word that he was saying to her. Sure, he didn’t know anything about her, but there was just something about her that made him want to help her. ”Besides, it’s about time I had some time off work anyway. I’ve been working twelve hour shifts for the past couple of weeks, and it’s proving to be quite tiring, even with the occasional day or two off. Anyway, I don’t think they will mind. I’m sure they should be decent enough to give me the day off tomorrow…..well at least they will be when I tell them that I’m sick anyway.” He said with a shrug of his shoulders. ”You never know. If I’m lucky, they might allow me more than the one day off. If I’m lucky, I could get two or more days, but I guess I will have to find out tomorrow when I call them.” Of course, he didn’t really know how long he would be given, but he was hoping it would be long enough to figure out something he could do with Kani.
Even though Dante didn’t really have too much of a problem with Kani doing nothing around his home, he was slightly surprised when she told him how she could do some work around his home. He didn’t really expect her to do any work around his home, but he did think it was nice of her to offer to do some work around his home. After thinking about it for a while, he nodded his head to her. ”Okay, I suppose it shouldn’t be too much of a problem if you would like to do some work around here. Still, even if you didn’t do anything around here, I wouldn’t consider you a burden at all, and you wouldn’t have any reason to feel guilty either.” The smile on his face widened as he thought it over some more. ”I can see this is something you are serious about, so if you wish to do anything to help out around here, then I will not stop you.” He lightly tapped his chin in thought for a moment soon afterwards, and as he did, he looked back into Kani’s eyes. ”Since you’re going to be staying here for a while, I could even teach you a few things. I don’t really know what you already know how to do, but I wouldn’t mind teaching you a few things. I could teach you how to cook if you don’t already know. It could prove to be quite fun actually, but it would depend on what you already know how to do, and what you don’t.” Dante genuinely thought it would be fun to be able to teach Kani a few things, but he was hoping that she would first tell him what she was able to do and what she wasn’t able to do. It would be sure to help him in figuring out what he would be able to attempt to teach her.
For a moment, Dante was about to remove his hand from her shoulder when he had seen her flinch slightly. However, he couldn’t help but feel a little surprised when she sat up, moved closer to him and hugged him. As she had wrapped her arms around him in the hug, Dante did the same, and he slowly wrapped his arms around her to return the hug. There was a small smile on his face as he felt just how soft her fur really seemed to be as her cheek was nuzzling against his own. The smile remained as he heard what she had said. ”You don’t have to thank me Kani. I’m just glad that you’re feeling happy now.” He smiled a little bit, letting his chin rest gently on her shoulder. ”I just want you to be able to settle down here. I really have no problem with you living here with me. I may not know everything about the place you came from, but from what you have told me so far, I can tell that it isn’t a nice place, and that you don’t want to go back there. Of course, that’s probably why you managed to get out of there in the first place. Don’t worry though, because you are free to stay here for however long you wish. Besides, I think the company would be nice as it can get lonely living on your own sometimes.” He spoke in a softer tone as he had said this to her. ”You’ve got a bed to sleep in, and I will go into town tomorrow to buy you some clothes. Of course, I will make sure that they are clothes that are more suited to your style.” He paused for a moment after having said this, and then he slowly pulled away from the hug to look into her eyes. ”When I do get you some new clothes tomorrow, would you like them to be as loose as the ones you have on now? Or would you like for them to be a little bit tighter?” He asked in a somewhat curious tone. Either way, Dante didn’t really have a problem with it, but he just thought it would be better to ask her.
Her ears dropped as he mentioned working several long shifts in a row. Was it normal for humans to be working so hard all the time? Every waking moment she was in the lab, there were scientists there checking on her and testing her. They didn't seem like they were interested to be there, nor did they seem happy with the results that came back, even though a few had mentioned that they were better than "the others". She figured it had to do with her number suffix at the end of her name. Kani growled a little and frowned. "Humans work too hard. They are bad to make you work so hard." She stated plainly and with a bit of resentment. The amount of work he did sounded close to what she did. Kani wondered what he did for a job silently, thinking it would be rude to simply ask him. Maybe he did a job that wasn't good and he was ashamed to tell her, which was why he didn't say in the first place. As he mentioned getting more time off, Kani smiled and her ears perked up. "I would like more time with Dante."
As he mentioned teaching her more things, her tail began to thump against his leg before she moved it from him, smiling bashfully and her ears dropping to the side a bit in embarrassment. "Sorry. I hope that didn't hurt," she said quietly. She then licked her lips and shifted in the bed a bit. "I want to learn. I want to be helpful." Learning how to cook would probably be her hardest lesson. She didn't see how cleaning could be so tough, so she looked forward to that lesson. Anything that would make her useful around his apartment. Kani thought more about her skills. She was mostly trained to fight and not worry about cooking for herself or anything else. She would usually eat things raw while she was in the training grounds. Maybe she'd tell him about that later. Kani glanced to his eyes and stared into them a moment. She saw kindness and friendship in him, causing her to smile a little more. At least she thought it was kindness and friendship. It made her smile, so it couldn't be all that bad.
As he hugged her back, Kani completely relaxed and began to purr softly. She closed her eyes and listened to him speak and enjoyed being close to him. She felt safe finally. Safer than she had ever felt her whole life. "I'll keep you company. I don't want you to be lonely." She murmured quietly with a smile. As he pulled away, her eyes snapped open and she stared at him while thinking about his questions. Her tail had uncurled around his leg and it flicked behind her as she thought. "Mmm... I wouldn't mind tighter. These feel comfy, but weird." She pulled on his shirt a little and poked at his shorts on her. Kani glanced back up to him with a small smile, then moved back to hugging him and nestled in. Her purring resumed as she laid there with her eyes closed and her tail curled around his leg once more.
Her eyes flickered open and she glanced to Dante and asked. "Are you comfy?" She wondered if smothering him like this was causing him some discomfort and if she should change her position so he didn't feel so awkward.
Dante noticed the way Kani’s ears had dropped when he had told her that he had to work several long shifts in a row. Even though he hadn’t really known her for too long, he had already managed to figure out that her ears always seemed to drop when she didn’t seem to like something. Well, this was something that he had noticed anyway. Of course, he didn’t really know if he had noticed it correctly or not. However, hearing her growl, and then seeing the frown on her face soon made him think otherwise. There was a small smile on his face as he thought about what she had said. Dante couldn’t help but nod his head in agreement. ”You are right Kani.” He nodded his head. ”Humans do work hard, and sometimes I do hate the long hours I have to work, but it’s something that has to be done. I would also say that they are bad for making me work so hard too, but at the end of the day….or more precisely…at the end of the month, I usually get paid, so it’s worth it in the end. Besides, as tough as my job is, I need it so I can pay the bills and buy food and other stuff too. I wouldn’t be able to do none of that without my job.” He said with a simple shrug of his shoulders. ”I was actually on my way home from work when I saw that explosion. You see, I work in a large warehouse.” Dante figured it would be a good idea to tell her where he worked, considering he was going to be spending a lot of time with her. Dante just came to the conclusion that it would be good to get to know each other. The smile on his face widened as he saw her ears perking up. ”I’m glad you would like more time with me Kani. I would like to spend more time with you too. It would be nice to find out more about you, and I would be more than happy to tell you more about myself too. All you have to do is just ask.”
He had wondered what she would think about the idea of him teaching her a few things, and Dante soon got his answer when he saw that bashful smile on her face. He smiled a little bit and shook his head a second later. ”Oh, don’t worry about it too much. It didn’t really hurt, so it’s okay. Anyway, I would be happy to teach you a few things, and I’m sure you could be helpful around here in your own way.” The smile he gave her was a genuine one. Dante didn’t know what he would end up teaching her, but he was sure he would be able to find some things that he would be able to teach her. ”Maybe I could start teaching you some things tomorrow?” He didn’t really know what she would think about the idea of him teaching her some things as soon as tomorrow, but he was hoping she would be up for the idea of it. ”Of course, if I do teach you some things tomorrow, it might have to be after I’ve gone into town to get your new clothes. That way, it will give me more time to teach you whatever it is I’m going to teach you.” Dante did think it would be genuinely fun to teach her things and learn more about her. In fact, he was looking forward to learning more about her. To him, she seemed like such an interesting person.
Hearing her purr as he had hugged her back only made him smile some more. He wasn’t sure why, but just hearing her purr like that….it almost seemed to make him relax some more. He felt himself relaxing against her some more, and that same small smile was still on his face as he listened to her speak. Dante wasn’t really sure what it was, but there was just something about Kani that made him enjoy being around her. This was despite the fact he hadn’t known her for very long at all. ”Thank you Kani. I think it would be great if you could keep me company here. It is really nice to have you around, even if I haven’t really known you for very long. It’s just nice to have you here. I enjoy your company Kani, and as long as you are here, I will make sure that you are safe. As long as you are here, you won’t have to worry about those people you escaped from.” He spoke in a soft, yet reassuring tone. Dante may not have known where she had come from, but he did get the distinct impression she didn’t like being there. Dante wasn’t going to make her go back, and all he really wanted was for her to feel safe. His eyes met with hers again as he had pulled back from the hug, and then he thought on what she had said about wanting tighter clothes. Smiling some more, he nodded his head. ”Okay, but how much tighter would you like them? I could get you the next size down, or would you like clothes that are at least two sizes down from the ones you’ve got on?” He didn’t really know just how tight she wanted her new clothes to be. Sure, he knew she wanted tighter clothes, but just how much tighter was what he didn’t know.
Of course, it came as a surprise to him when she had hugged him again. He smiled a little to her and nodded his head in response to her question. ”I am comfy, so don’t worry about that.” He let his arms wrap around her once more, gently pulling her into the hug as he let his head rest on his pillow. Her question had made him think she hadn’t had the chance to hug many people before him, so he moved his head back a fraction so he was able to look straight into her eyes. ”Hugging like this is not a bad thing Kani, so you shouldn’t think that it is.” He spoke in a soft tone and he smiled a little bit before resting his head back down on his pillow.
Kani listened politely as he spoke. She understood the language quite well by then and never moved her gaze to his lips or faltered to understand what he meant. So he worked in a warehouse. She didn't know what exactly they did there, but it didn't seem nefarious, so she didn't want to question him too much. While she was curious, she felt it was best to not ask so many things all at once, besides, it was late and she did feel exhausted. More questions would lead to more talking, even though she did enjoy hearing him talk. She would have all day with him tomorrow to let him speak and teach her, anyways. It flattered her that he found her as interesting as she found him. Perhaps this arrangement would work after all. Part of Kani was relieved she didn't decide to attack him when they first met and she decided to give people a second chance more often... if they weren't from the lab. "Thank you, Dante. I really want to learn. About you and whatever else you want to teach me. The sooner, the better." She said with a happy smile. Maybe if he taught her enough she could go out in the open and not hide. She doubted that would be anytime soon, though.
As he spoke of keeping her safe, she glanced down and moved closer to him, resting her head just under his chin and listened to him while she stared at his shirt. She could be safe there? Dante would keep her safe? She thought back to the weapons the guards had used and even the helicopter. She'd have to protect him too, but if she could stay in his home for a while then maybe it'd throw the guards off her track. Kani closed her eyes and smiled. She had found her safe haven on her first try and she made a friend. She didn't know if it always worked out that way, but she knew she was certainly lucky. At the mention of clothes, she thought a moment, not moving from her position. Kani's train of thought went to the television and what she saw on it. The women tended to wear things that hugged the curves of their body. She wanted to be normal for Dante, so she said. "Two sizes down...?" She spoke as if asking for his approval. She was certain that's what she wanted, but she also wanted to get his take on it.
Relieved, Kani sighed with a smile that he was comfy. She worried her arm would be digging into his side or that her tail was causing him discomfort. When he told her it wasn't a bad thing to hug like that, she lifted her head a little, the tip of her ears folded down a little and she gave him a bashful look. As he rested his head on the pillow, Kani lifted hers and licked the corner of his lips quickly and tucked back down underneath his chin. Her tongue felt similar to a feline's, a little damp and with tiny, soft spines covered it. As she rested her head, her eyes closed and she sighed with a purr. "Th-Thank you... Good night, Dante." She whispered, starting to drift off to sleep.
As he had been speaking with Kani, he had come to notice that she was able to pick up on and understand what he was saying to her quite easily. Dante thought of this as being nothing but a good thing, mainly because he knew it would mean he would be able to teach her a number of things without too much trouble. Well, that was what he was hoping anyway. After all, she seemed to be able to pick up on the speech quite easily, so it made him wonder just how easily she would be able to pick up on different things. The only way he would know for sure would be to find out when he would start teaching her different things the next day. That was definitely going to be something that was going to prove to be a whole lot of fun, and that was something that he was sure of too. Of course, because of how late it was, Dante thought it would have been better to tell her later what he would be able to show and teach her. He was able to see the look of curiosity that was in her eyes, but at the same time, he was also able to see just how tired she seemed to look too. There was a small smile on his face as she had spoken. He really couldn’t help but admire her eagerness to learn. ”Well, you’re welcome Kani.” He whispered to her with that same small smile on his face. ”I will definitely teach you anything you want to know and learn tomorrow. I hope you’re going to be prepared though, because there could be a lot that I might be able to teach you.” He smiled again as he had made himself comfortable in his bed, snuggling up to her.
Dante let his arm gently wrap around Kani’s waist as she had moved closer to him in the bed. As she had rested her head just underneath his chin, he tilted his chin upwards ever so slightly, just so that she would be a little more comfortable. As he was hugging her, Dante felt surprised at just how warm she really seemed to be. She may not have been able to see it, but there was also a somewhat thoughtful expression on his face too as he couldn’t help but think about what may have happened to her if she didn’t end up in his apartment. Dante really didn’t want to think about what would have happened to her if she had stumbled into the apartment of one of his neighbours, or even if she had found somewhere a few blocks down. Either way, there was something telling him that they wouldn’t have been as accepting of her like he was. In that sense, Dante was actually glad that he had left his balcony door open before leaving for work, even if he had left it open accidentally. Sure, she may have been different, but there was no way that Dante was going to turn her away. Not now and definitely not anytime soon. After all, he had meant it when he had told her that she could stay with him as long as she needed to. He had also meant it when he had told her that he would do what he could to keep her safe. Dante knew she must have been running from something, but he was just unsure as to what that was exactly. He was soon distracted from his thoughts as he heard Kani’s suggestion for clothes. Dante thought it over for a few moments before he responded. ”I will tell you what I will do.” He whispered to her. ”I will get you some clothes that are two sizes down from what you’ve got on now, and I will also get you some that are one size down. That way, you can try them on and tell me which ones you like more. How does that sound?” He asked in a somewhat curious tone.
He smiled a little bit, pulling her a little closer to him , and he soon found himself feeling really tired. Dante closed his eyes just as he had felt Kani quickly licking the corner of his lips. Of course, he did wonder what she was doing, but he chose not to say anything about it. One thing he did notice was how her tongue seemed to feel. Dante thought it almost felt like the tongue of a cat. This only raised more questions in his mind, but he figured it would be better to save the questions until later, so that was what he was going to do. ”Good night Kani.” He whispered before he attempted to fall asleep. It didn’t really take Dante too long to fall asleep, as he had fallen asleep within ten minutes.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Dante slept peacefully through the night, and throughout the night, he remained cuddled up to Kani. It was strange, but he managed to sleep much better than he had done in quite a long time. The time was around 8am by the time he finally started to stir in the bed. Slowly, he opened his eyes, and he smiled as he could see that Kani was still sleeping. Since he didn’t really want to wake her up, he moved as slowly and quietly as he could, trying his best to get out of the bed without waking her up. It took him a couple of minutes, but he was finally able to get out of the bed. As soon as he was out of the bed, he crept out of his bedroom and into the living room. Once in the living room, he walked over to the telephone and picked it up. Dante dialled the number for his work, and when he was able to get an answer, he did his best to feign sickness, telling his boss that he had been throwing up ever since getting home the previous night. Dante even put voice to make himself sound sick. Luckily for him, his boss bought it all, and gave him a few days off work. There was a huge smile on Dante’s face as he hung up the phone, and then he walked back to his bedroom. He pushed open the door and poked his head inside to see Kani still sleeping. Smiling still, he walked inside and closed the door behind him. Afterwards, he walked back over to the bed and sat down on the edge, looking down at Kani with a small smile as she slept.

Kani simply nodded her head to his plan, barely even aware of what he said. She drifted off to sleep immediately afterwards.

The helicopter light shone in his apartment building window, blinding her as she shot up, wide awake. She jumped off the bed and swung the bedroom door open and stared at the curtains whipping around wildly to the wind current created by the helicopter. She had to get them away from the apartment building and keep Dante safe and oblivious to her past. Kani ran to the window just as the masked men in black climbed up. Her claws grew and she sliced at them, but her claws went through them, like they were shadows. Horrified, she went back into the apartment and closed the door behind them. Suddenly the front door started to break and the scientists were there. Kani screeched and jumped over the table and couch and ran down the hallway. She turned to watch the scientists walk closer and the men in black draw nearer too with their electric weapons. She breathed heavily in panic, feeling cornered and trapped. The door opened and she tumbled in, right into Dante's arms and the door closed and they were teleported away. Kani looked up to Dante who was smiling and he said. "You're safe with me, Kani. They can't get you." A feeling welled up inside Kani at that point. She hadn't felt it before and it was powerful...

Kani awoke to the feeling of the bed moving slightly behind her. A slight panic came over her as she realized Dante wasn't there. Was she back at the lab? No... she was on a bed. She glanced around the room slowly, shocked to see she was still in it. The whole thing wasn't a dream. As Kani moved, she inhaled deeply, picking up Dante's scent. Her pupils dilated and she purred. Kani stretched, sticking her butt and tail up in the air, then sitting on her knees and raising her hands and arching her back. She yawned widely and glanced back to Dante who was watching her. She smiled pleasantly to him in return and ran her fingers through her hair once. Her tail swished back and forth a moment, then the feeling from the dream came back to her.

Slightly confused, Kani kept still and didn't act upon her impulse to rub against him and lick him again. Her ears dropped to the side and she looked at Dante, trying to decipher her feelings, but they were so foreign to her she couldn't describe them. It was then that Dante's words from last night came back to her. It was okay to hug, and she wanted to be near him. She crawled over to him on the bed and sat beside him, then curled her tail around him and wrapped her arms around him as well, nuzzling her face against his shoulder and purring. She had to clench her jaw to keep herself from licking him. Being close to him like that wasn't enough for Kani, however. She wanted to be in his arms again like last night. She couldn't explain why she was suddenly feeling this way, but hoped she could keep herself under control. She didn't know a lot about proper behaviour, but she knew that there were limits she had to adhere to.

"Good morning, Dante," she said quietly, daring to open her mouth a moment as she felt she had her urges in check. "I hope you slept well too?" Kani glanced up to him from where her head rested on his shoulder. While the desire to lick him had gone away, she still wanted to be close to him and felt she couldn't get rid of that craving as easily.
