The warning bells sounded loud and clear through the castle, the fires were lit. The castle sat on a hill surrounded by five other hills, all clear of trees. There was no way to approach the castle without being seen. On each of the surrounding hills there was a lookout post set up with a signal fire prepared for any time it may be needed. Those fires had not been lit in over five hundred years.
As captain Alethia, leader of the princess' personal guard, stepped out onto one of the overlooking balconies, her heart sunk. Not one of the fires was lit, but rather four of the five were burning brightly. The only one that wasn't lit was the one that backed onto the sea. Only an hundred meters of stood between the hill and the coast line, which is probably why it wasn't being attacked. The elves after all ruled the seas, no one would dare attack them there.
Looking out onto the battle, that had seemed to spring up quicker then reason said it should have been able too. Still it was clear even now that the untested defenders of the castle wouldn't hold out for long against the horde that was now nearly surrounding them. This wasn't just some random raid by a renegade bunch of orcs, this was a concerted attack by a foe that was far more organized then they had realized.
Alethia cursed softly before turning back inside, her dark green cloak swirling around her. She was already in full mithril plate armor, with gleaming sword at her side. Her long copper red hair pulled back in a long braid and her emerald green eyes flashing in the light of coming battle. Walking past the two that were in the guard quarters of the princess. "Come we must see that the princess is safe. I fear we will need to take her out of the castle though to see to that." Her eyes turned to one of the two, the newest recruit to the princess' personal guard. "Check the west stairwell see that the hallway between here and there is clear."
Kiara was the one she spoke too, nodding with a large smile on her lips. She might have been the newest of the three guards, but in her mind was by far the most experienced. The young elf maid came from the northern borders where fringe battles with the orcs were a daily occurrence. She had grown up with the twin swords she carried in her hands or at her sides at all times. Her hair shone deep blood red in the dark light of the moon where it came through the window. She wore no armor feeling that even the lightness and flexibility of mithril or leather was too encumbering for her. She relied purely on her own skill and speed to keep herself alive. It had never failed her, yet.
Nodding the younger elf moved off into the corridor, to find out just how infiltrated the castle already was. Alethia turned to the other door in the room motioning the third of the princess' guards to follow her into the privet rooms of the princess herself.
