A long caravan traveled down the cobbled stone road. Moving right through the center of town, there in the middle was an ornate and very decorative litter that was covered by a current on both sides. The men who flanked either side of the litter were very heavily armed, and had the look of hardened combat veterans. If one looked along the rest of the precision it was also made up of a very style of posture. Though the troops that were in it, were all very well armed, and well trained, considering whom they belonged to. It was the personal military formation of Prince Ryou, who had received his first command only a year ago for his birthday. With just the small command he had been given, the prince had been able to make a difference in the battles that his father had let him be a part of. The young man’s future as a strategic genius showed, and the men that surrounded him were loyal to the prince and not the king for the reason alone. They knew that despite his age, he wouldn’t take them into hell if he didn’t think they could get out. This was why there was a lot of talk among the brigade on what kind of dragon the young prince would choose… since after all… it would end up being their second in command.
It did not take long for the procession to move down the main street towards the gates of the palace at the center of town. This wasn’t the palace at the capital city, but instead was located in the former nation of Zhou. Near were the original Emperor Qin Shihuang had discovered the tribes of Dragons, who were now considered the most loyal subjects to his ancestors. The treaty which had been signed basically lifted the dragon tribes form the level of unknown savage tribes (At least in most human eyes) all the way up to a sort of pseudo-warrior/noble class. Much like that of the samurai of Japan, though that didn’t stop the xenophobia form the lower and most other noble classes. Who were angry about, and a bit jealous of what they saw as negtive 'savage' influance on the royal family. It was really only among the Royal Court that they found themselves appreciated. Even though there oath was sworn to protect the members of the royal family especially the Emperor, every person that lived in the Royal Court had one. For members of the royal family the creature they were paired with became a guardian over them for life. Functioning as a friend, tutor, advisor, protector, and if desired concubine… they were considered part of the royal family, and so were treated with same level of respect and honor as the human members. Plus those that were given to the members of the Royal Family came form the head dragon clan, known as the Imperial Dragons. Each of the Dragon clans were differnt, especially considering that some of the lower ones, where indeed more animal like. Yet until Emporer Qin had found them, there had been no major class divide, only breeding divides. The Imperials had always lead the dragons, and took care of the lovable, though aniamlistic... lower clans.
So today was that special day, when future heir to the throne, Kurosawa Ryou would pick out his protector. The young prince really didn’t know what to expect actually, since he had been raised away from the main palace for his entire life. The purpose of this was to prevent any of the lower guardian clans from gaining influence over a child of the royal family. It had been realized quickly from the start of the treaty that it would be fair for all clans involved this way, because of the need to make sure that the royal family was always paired off with Imperial Class Dragons. The influences on the young prince’s choice would be as completely a human one as possible. It was also the reason that the Queen Mother didn’t raise the princes directly, and when she visited them she wasn’t allowed to bring her guardian. Of course in the end, the heir was taught about all of the species of guardians at some point, and usually would be encouraged towards certian colors of dragons and how to spot that color in there human form. Though the reasons for this more had to do with what made ‘the proper guardian’ for an Emperor… or whatever that member of the royal house was.
When they stopped in front of the doors to the palace two of the guards moved forward and opened the doors to the main chamber were the choices for guardianship had gathered. Carrying the litter the large men walked inside as an older gentlemen came up beside them, while they put the litter down off their shoulders gently. The great doors were shut after most of the more ‘civilian’ part of the convoy had come in, and started to head off down the different hallways to ready the palace. The actual selection wasn’t until later, though usually the guardian that was spent the most time with after the critical ‘unofficial selection’ as it was called among the clans… was usually the one chosen. The older gentlemen walked forward and then then spoke, “Hello honored warriors of the Guardian Clans. The Emperor bids you all welcome to another of the selection ceremonies. As agreed in the treaty all of those who are of age at the time a selection is needed are allowed to try, and your families and tribes are being sent equal tribute as our appreciation for this honor. As well as part of your vows to prevent infighting… now then… before we can began… Who has been chosen to speak for the clans?”
