The day had been rather long for Alex, as he was walking back home, a book stuffed under his arm. Idly, his tongue went over his teeth, sliding over the longer fang that he came to know as a strange birthmark. It was strange and difficult to find a spot in his mouth where it was comfortable, but he was used to it by now. His father had wanted him out of the house for the day – for what, he didn’t know, but knowing his father it was never good. He was a brilliant scientist – insane, possibly, but brilliant. He heard stories about how he was before he was born, when his parents were together.
But now, his mother was dead, died in childbirth. Tipping points were always tragic.
The walk home was short, having jogged some of it. His father pushed ‘scholarly’ topics onto him, wanting his son to follow in his footsteps. But Alex always fought to balance school and learning with working his own body. It was almost second nature, and it came easy to him. He was medium set, faster and stronger than he looked at first glance, although he never had to show it.
He opened the front door to his house, closing and locking the door behind him. While he admitted that some of the things his father had done deserved to get him in prison, he was family, and he kept the family secrets, well, secret. “I’m home.” He called out through the house, and it was hardly a moment before the familiar man came up from the basement in a labcoat.
“Ah, you’re home a little early. But that’s fine, I finished what I wanted.” His father came forward, hugging Alex. “I changed your room, and I thought you would want your Birthday Present a little early...”
Alex chuckled. “You know I don’t care about such things.”
“Doesn’t matter! 21 is an important age for anyone!” His father pulled out a key from the pocket, putting it in Alex’s hand and closing the fingers for a good grip. “This is the key for your room. Whatever you do, don’t lose it.”
The two of them walked upstairs, down the opposite hall from Alex’s old room. He noticed the lock on the new room was reversed, with the lock on the hallway side, which meant the key was for inside the room. That seemed weird to him. But he followed his father into the room, after watching him ready the lock. Locking them both into the room? Well, he had the key…
All of his things were in the room, although this room was much larger than the other room. And without any windows. A peculiar thing that he didn’t mind. He pulled his sunglasses off now since he didn’t have to worry about light. Even with all of his things in the room, some in boxes, there was a lot of open space. He would have to think of what to do with that.
“And now if you come over here…” His father had moved to the closet, which had a keypad instead of a normal knob. Alex found it weird, but he moved in front of the door to see what was inside. His father pressed a combination that Alex memorized after watching. “Happy Birthday.” And the door opened…
“What the…” What he saw only shocked him. There was a girl there, with clothing that would be adequately described as scraps, with ears of a cat, and a matching tail. His surprise got the best of him, but it was obvious that his father was ready to grab the girl should she try to run. “I figured you would enjoy something like this, Alex.”
