In the relatively-large elf city of Onbu, it was the Night of Dragons. Every few decades, a small clutch of varied dragon eggs would appear in the town-square. The elves would come, one-by-one, attempting to make them hatch and become a part of the fabled Dragon Riders. In the fables, only male elves could become one with the dragons, due to their shared telepathic abilities and immortality.
At first, the square was empty. No one dared to be present when the eggs appeared, for it was said to be bad luck. But, as fast and easily as the wind changed, a collection of five eggs appeared near the statue of a legendary Rider. They were all different colors; white, black, crimson, aquamarine, and a earthy-brown.
Hours passed, and the citizens of the elf city came out excitedly, a large crowding forming around the clutch. Steadily, each of the male elves (both young and old) attempted to coax the dragons out. And it worked. Mostly. Four the eggs hatched, leaving only the largest of them all, a moon-white egg that trembled, cold to the touch. But no one could make it hatch. And so most of the soon left, leaving the egg by itself as it waited for its Rider.
