As far as ideas went, this was a bad one. The wind whipped around her, rain pelted down. Her clothes were soaked through and clinging to her body. At least she would have been dry in the car, but the engine had gone off and she couldn't get it working. It would have got cold and there was a house a little further down the narrow country road.
Surely she could find shelter there and maybe use the phone to call for help.
So the house looked kind of scary. And it was pretty deserted. That didn't mean anything. Horror films were just that. Horror films. They weren't real. This house was probably occupied by a nice, old lady with cookies or something.
Elsbeth wished she had a coat. Her T-shirt wasn't doing much against the ran. Or anything, really, and her soaking wet bra was starting to become incredibly uncomfortable. She didn't even want to talk about her jeans. Just... ugh.
Could this day get any worse?
She had to take care not to trip on her way to the house. The garden path could use some fixing up, she noted. The old lady, purely a figment of her imagination but it made her feel better about the situation, probably wasn't physically up to garden work. But she made it too the door without tripping and landing on her face.
The door, however, didn't have a bell. Damn it. Oh well. Elsbeth knocked. "Hello? Is anyone home? My car broke down and I need some help!" she called.
