It had been a golden age for humanity. After milennia of waiting, of dreaming, of staring up at the sky and wondering what was out there, humanity had finally reached for the stars...and the stars had embraced them. Human kind spread first throughout the systems surrounding their own, encountering unimaginable wonders, finding themselves not alone in the galaxy, finding friends that they could work with, live with. For 3 centuries humans and their allies had spread through almost half of the galaxy. They had built colonies on far flung worlds, constructed space stations that would have seemed like glistening utopia's to the humans of old. The human race were masters of technology, anything they could imagine they seemed able to create. It seemed like a dream that would never end....until the encounter with the Ska'leesh.
The Ska'leesh had occupied the far half of the galaxy for almost a thousand years, expanding slowly, building their forces, enslaving all who opposed their religion. Humans attempted to make peace, but the Ska'leesh weren't interested...still...the technology of the humans was superior, and the Ska'leesh were patient....they had been willing to wait...to watch this new race...after all...they were biding their time for an even greater threat they knew to be coming from the great beyond, the great darkness, they couldn't distract themselves with the humans....until the transgression. In their curiosity, or perhaps their ignorance, humans had sought to explore a great frontier, to solve a great mystery that had puzzled their scientists for centuries. A great ship had been constructed and humanity had set out on their journey into the very heart of the galaxy, to learn what lay at the galactic core. For the Ska'leesh however, this was unforgiveable. Their religion dictated the core of the Milky Way as the source of all life in the Universe, the home of the gods, a place that mortal beings were unworthy of ever going into. For them, this was a transgression that could not be forgiven.
The ferocity of the first attacks took humans by surprise. The colonies on the border of their empire fell almost instantly. Even when the humans and their allies were able to mobilise their forces, it had been centuries since they had known war. Human kind had forgotten how to fight....though they quickly re-learned their old ways. The damage was done however, the Ska'leesh had gained the momentum they needed. World after world, system after system, the humans fell. The Ska'leesh took no prisoners....they destroyed the human ships and stations, scorched their worlds in the cleansing fire of the gods leaving nobody behind. Month after month, year after year, the Ska'leesh were drawing ever closer, slowly spreading and surrounding the very heart of humanity. When they encountered the homeworld of the human allies, they killed almost all....but took just a few prisoners before burning the world....the Ska'leesh were not fools after all....they knew that they would need more than just themselves to win the greater war that was coming.
After a century of war, Earth was surrounded, the Ska'leesh fleets coming from all directions. The blockade of Earth lasted for almost a decade, a wall of ships and stations hiding the planet from sight, but the Ska'leesh were relentless. Even after all this time they had never forgotten what this war was about.
When the final battle came, neither side held anything back. Both knew that this would decide the war. For humanity, the only humans left in the galaxy were on Earth. For the Ska'leesh...well...truth be told the humans had inflicted more damage than they would ever know. The Ska'leesh military had been exhausted...all but a few of their ships and soldiers were now committed to the attack on Earth. Even their slaves had been used in combat, draining them heavily. Had the humans held out just a little longer....they could well have won. But it was not meant to be.
The battle raged for days, the sky lighting up with weapons fire, explosions as ships were destroyed and engine cores breached. But in the end the Ska'leesh broke through.....their holy fire igniting the atmosphere of the Earth, paradise itself burning, everyone and everything on it becoming nothing more than ashes. The remaining human ships had tried....their crews driven by a rage even greater than that of the Ska'leesh, but it was all for nothing. Many chose to make suicide runs....to take as many of the aliens as they could with them....such a tactic was foreign to the Ska'leesh. By the time they knew what was going on, the humans were all but gone. They had time only to save one....the last human....a male...the young captain of the last Battleship left...his crew were killed, slaughtered by the boarding parties. Only he had been spared...made to watch as his world burned, as his crew were slaughtered. The last thing he remembered before the world had gone dark was a feeling of emptiness....despire...hopelessness....emotions that humans thought they had long sinced rid themselves of....
A month later, Eric woke with a gasp, suddenly sitting up and clutching at his heart. "I...I'm....alive...?" He slowly looked up, then shielded his eyes. Sunlight? The sky.....the sky was green.....but then he didn't know what he had expected. The skys of Earth were gone after all...the sun....no...suns....two hung in the sky....their light was warm....it reminded him of home. Slowly Eric stood, looking around, then down at himself. He was still wearing his military uniform...well...it was a little tattered, but it still covered him at least. "Where am I.....?" He stumbled for a moment, then managed to start walking, moving forward slowly, looking around. "Why did they leave me alive....?" He shook his head. He was the last of his kind....he didn't want to be here....he didn't want to be alive....but then....he didn't want to die either....he just wanted to be....alone.
