Emily flipped through her textbook searching for keywords to copy down into her study notebook, trying to make sure she had all of the terms memorized for the upcoming exam. Her right hand brushed a stray lock of hair behind her right ear and adjusted her glasses which were perched upon her small nose. A sigh escaped her lips and she leaned back in her chair, left hand pressed against her forehead. Her room was dim as she had drawn the curtains across her window and the work before her was only lit from the light of her desk lamp.
She wore plain yet modest clothes, with a white t-shirt and knee-length plaid skirt and matching headband which helped keep her shoulder-length hair out of her face. Her round glasses gave her a geeky or academic look, which certainly did not earn her any points with the boys from her class. At the age of 20, she had still not gotten into a serious relationship. She tried to keep her mind off this fact, but it weighed her down like irons bound to her heels.
Her cousin and she were living together for financial reasons, as she was finishing up her higher education while he was just starting and there was no reason for them to not lessen their housing and utility expenses. The two of them got along well, but she hardly had time to socialize with him much other than during meals. The two of them had the house to themselves that weekend, but she hardly thought much of it as it simply meant she would have to prepare more meals on her own. Nothing else would change, right?
