Derek Anderson stood in his living room, staring out the huge bay window that overlooked the street, his gaze taking in the neatly trimmed grass, the beautiful blue and red flowers lining the sidewalk, and the cars that whizzed by, each with somewhere to go. His body virtually bounced in place like a child itching to run out the door and play but he couldn’t help it. He’d been that way all day long, hell more like all week long, and it wasn’t likely to change anytime soon. Movement off to the side caught his eye and his head whipped around, staring up the street at a car that slowly approached, driving like it wasn’t entirely sure where it was heading. The closer it got, the harder his heart thudded inside his chest, acting like a drummer pounding out a fast, hard beat. It was almost to his house when the driver suddenly found their gas pedal and the vehicle shot forward, rapidly disappearing down the other side of the street, drawing a sigh from his lips. Placing his hand against the window pain, he scrunched his fingers, wondering what was taking so long for her to get there.
When the scream echoed through the house, his wired body jumped and he spun around, staring across the room at his wife, a scowl spreading across his face. “Damn it, Angie, are you trying to give me a fucking heart attack?” he spat. The woman stared at him for a moment, her body cocked to the side, jutting out a hip, her bright red hair, so fake it was laughable, cascading down her shoulder. She wore a skin tight little top that was supposed to look sexy but totally failed and a pair of hip hugging jeans. The stance and look were clearly her attempt to gain his attention but it only brought out a sneer. “It would serve you right if you had one, you ass” she answered back. “I’m standing here practically begging you to take me upstairs and fuck me and all you can do is stare at the window like a lost little puppy.” She got a disgusted look on her face as she stalked towards him, finally coming to a stop when she was practically in his face. “She’s your fucking sister, Derek, not your wife.” Derek studied her for a moment, his gaze narrowed, not at all surprised by her outburst. It was Angie’s way after all, to pick a fight with him constantly and then whine that he wasn’t treating her right.
Their marriage had been over for years but he stayed with it because he had too much to lose if he left. She’d made it clear numerous times that if he filed for divorce she, and that evil sister of hers, would fleece him for all she was worth. Though they still had sex occasionally, usually after both had gotten drunk, it was lackluster at best and Angie knew that. She was a bitter hag in many ways but that didn’t stop her from seeking solace outside of the house; he knew of at least two affairs she’d already had, something he hadn’t done himself. It was because of all of their marriage that he was so happy now; the news of his sister’s graduation and her desire to move in with him so she could be closer to the city had been the best news in years. He and Angie had fought about it of course, fought so hard that things had been thrown and broken and one window had been shattered – the police visit being the topper of the night – but in the end he had won. Lillian was set to arrive that day and he’d been watching for her almost since the moment he woke up. “Thank god for small miracles, Angie. Now back off before I make you.” That drew a huff from the bitch but she finally moved, turning and going into the kitchen, her swinging arm knocking his empty cup off the table where it shattered against the floor. “Guess you better pick that up, dear” she said with fake buttery honey in her voice.
He shook his head and ignored the mess for now, turning back towards the window to continue his watch. The road was busier than normal, which caused his breath to hitch a time or two when he thought he saw her, but that was it. There was no movement from his neighbors, no shades opening or closing across the street, not even a dog or cat walking about. Growling softly to himself, he almost missed it, his gaze turned another way until the last possible second. When his head swiveled back to the left again, drawn by some unknown force, his eyes when wide almost instantly. The blue car had just passed his neighbor’s house and was slowing to a crawl, its turn signal on. Then it was pulling up his drive and coming to a stop, a moment that felt like it caused his heart to burst. Moving immediately, he left the window and threw open the door, bouncing out onto the sidewalk. Seeing the window down, his smile widened and he gave a wave. “About damn time, sis! I’ve been waiting forever.”
