Joan sighed, pulling on a long overcoat. It was finally her time. It wasnât even like she was the best candidate; she was just the one that was chosen to go. It wasnât fair, but then again there was no way it could be after what had happened. They had started a war larger than any other. Larger than any they could even contain. And then it happened. All Hell broke loose, quite literally. No one knew exactly what caused it, but it had happened none the less. It was the worst thing that could have happened. At the time, Joan was with her family on a cruise. When they finally got word of the war it was too late. They ended up wrecked on an island, not completely deserted, but close enough to it. It was obviously owned by a very wealthy person because the island was covered in buildings, about to be opened as a resort. Now it looked awful. Many buildings had burned down, but it wasnât completely ruined.
Now the people that made it off the ship and into the barricade seemed to be the only survivors. There werenât too many of them left after only a week. It was not looking good. They had started drawing straws to see who would be next to go out to scavenge for food, water, and whatever else they could find. They mainly stayed hidden in a secret basement after they heard the screams of the people that were actually still on the island.
Now Joan was handed the gasmask. It was almost too big for her but the straps were tightened and it was fine. They didnât expect her to come back anyways. It was the little bit of hope they had that she would bring food and they wouldnât have to eat each other that kept them doing this. She sighed, waving goodbye to the few she knew and then she was gone. She was very cautious as she left, making sure not to be seen, though she couldnât be sure. She sighed, though it wasnât enough to be heard by anything. She didnât know where to even go. She eventually found her way outside and found a convenience store that was still intact and went in. She found the first food she could and kneeled down, not even realizing or just not worrying about showing her panties to whoever was watching. She didnât expect anyone to even be there though.
