Evie stood at the window looking out, she’d known of this day since she was eleven when she’d been told that she would marry a man she’d never met. One that her parents hadn’t even known. Each person that passed had her wondering if it were he. Sighing she moved away from the glass pane and finished dressing. The gown was form fitting and flowed away from her body at the hips. The white color off set her caramel colored skin. The deep green eyes shown out as she looked over herself in the mirror. Silently her mother zipped the back of her dress and fixed her veil over her thick black hair. The strands, when down, reached her waist and curled at the ends. Evelyn had a figure like an hourglass, long shapely legs and a sparkling smile on her full lips.
Her mind went to the male that she was to marry, would he be kind and handsome. Or would he be hideous and cruel. She prayed he was kind; she really didn’t care if he was hideous. Shallow did not describe her in the least. Twenty one year’s she’d waited for this day and she was nervous. The estate was impeccable and couldn’t believe he lived here. The room she was in was larger than her bedroom at home, her former home. A sharp knock on the door alerted the patrons that she was needed in the library. The groom’s parents had arranged a moment for them to meet before the wedding. Her chest tightened as she stepped from the room. Kissing her mother’s cheek, she grasped her flowers in one hand and followed the maid to the room.
She stood at the door and knocked, no sound came from within so she opened the door. First a crack and then slowly wider. The cool weather outside called for a fire in the fireplace so she crossed the floor on silent feet and warmed her hands a moment. Making her way around the room slowly she placed her bouquet on a chair and pulled one book from the shelf. Before she could read the title, she heard the door open and she was scrambling to put the book back. Turning she found only a made delivering a tray of tea. Sighing with relief Evie smiled. “I’m sorry I thought you were...” the door opened behind the maid. “Someone else.”
