The chief scientist and a member of the security team exchanged the typical pleasantries as they locked down the labs for the evening. As the last member of the science team left the suburban office complex, the security team took over for the evening. From the complex’s small control room, diverse motion sensors, cameras, automated turrets, and other devices were activated for the evening.
Around the perimeter of the facility and inside several of its corridors, guards began their nightly rituals of patrols interspersed with coffee and smoke breaks. Their duty was to deny access to the labs and the priceless research data. Like the individual scientists, they knew almost nothing about the greater whole of their employing organization.
Sabotage was always a threat, as was more mundane espionage. Security was intended to detect and neutralize threats by any means necessary. No vocal warnings followed by threats to call the police – intruders would be dealt with strictly “in-house.” The facility’s shadowy administrators cared not where they ended up, only that they were disposed of efficiently.
