Katie shuffled the papers in her hand, threatening to spill over onto the floor. She had been an intern at the Cryogenic Research Facility for three months now, and she had been kept busy the entire time. She'd had no time to follow the news or even keep up with her family as she worked long hours for bad pay in the hopes of making some great connections for her future.

She was hurrying down a hallway to Dr. Roberts' office, checking to make sure she had all the files he had asked for. Looking outside, protesters still milled around the so-called "Germ Factory" next door. She didn't pay them much attention, as they had been claiming for two weeks that new research would mean the end of the world and nothing had happened yet. She considered them more than a little crazy.

With her hands full, she kicked at the door in order to knock, calling out, "Dr. Roberts! I have that research you asked for!"

Doctor Roberts was a good man in s situation that he didn't like at all, things had gotten out of control and not in a good way at all. He had found out, a few strange things had been happening. That they might of been targeted for an attack, the attack was to make a medicine they were working on go hot, meaning active, so that instead of healing, it would kill anyone around. They had been able to contain it so far, yet he was worried, on edge from the concern that what could happen if the containment on the lab failed. He knew it was going to fail, it was a fate now, he saw as certain, such a sad way to go.

He looked at door hearing something as he blinked a few times. He looked at Katie and blinked as he hthen nodded, "Well it doesn't matter anymore, or I don't think it does, come Katie, we have somewhere to go," he said thinking of an idea, that might be rather important in the coming days, and years, if there was going to be a chance. In that moment, he had a vision of genius. He took a kind of hobby of his a watch with various infromation, that he had worked on over the years and smiled as he slipped it onto Katie's wrist, "a gift, for your hard work," he said to her as he lead her to a different part of the lap. this was a test area. It had a status camber that would put a person to sleep for years. He thought about using it on himself, yet, that would not work. No, he would have to find another person to go to the future, someone younger, and well Katie was the only choice on hand for that.

He smiled as he walked with her, "Katie, things are about to get bad, really bad, but you are going to have to do me a favor, live, get into this chamber, you will live past the events of the coming days, in the future, you will find a different place, I am sure of this, but I have put together all the information I could for you on that watch, use it well, humanity may be counting on you."

There was a noise outside the door, and Katie turned but didn't see anything. Turning back to Doctor Roberts, she heard him tell her that they had somewhere to go. Setting the papers down so that they scattered over the desk, she nodded and said, "Yes, sir." He offered her a gift to her for her hard work, which made her smile broadly. It was an interesting looking watch like nothing she had seen before, but it was pretty and she loved it. "Thank you, Doctor! I like working with you!" she said, smiling and offering him a hug. But then he was taking her to a part of the complex she had never been to before. She had heard rumors, of course, but she had never seen it for herself. There was a chamber in there connected to all kinds of equipment.

He smiled reassuringly and talked to her, saying that things were going to get very bad and that she needed to get into the chamber.

"The chamber?" she asked hesitantly. "Uhm.. ok, Doctor." She didn't understand what he was saying.. what he was talking about with things getting bad, but he looked scared and she trusted him. Trembling nervously, she made her way up to the chamber, fingering the watch nervously as she did so, looking back at the doctor at the controls, watching her. "I'll.. uhm.. do my best," she said, still not sure what he was intending. She climbed into the chamber and looked out at the doctor, her hand pressing against the window. Suddenly, it seemed real and terror crept into her heart. She wanted to cry out, to get back out of the chamber, but she could see the doctor was already getting to work.

Roberts looked at her as he helped her into the chamber, the time for trouble was coming fast, he could hear alarms going off all around himself. He looked up and let out a sigh as he finished the preparations and froze the young woman in status to be there for a number of years, he pumped a vaccine to the virus into her tube, so she would be infected when she got out to anything really. He looked over all the information before He went over and closed the door. He then activated something and disappeared forever.

Time moved slowly as the poor young lady was in the status tube, society broke down fast, the world population went from almost 7 Billion to a quarter of a billion spread out across the globe. Where the tube was the worst hit area, due to the nearest to where the flashpoint that caused it all, happened. It was a horrible desert, hot, and dry, life barely coming back even as fast as plant life. It was this world that an alarm went of in the tube, which was now underground, in the remains of the lab. The alarm on her watched went up as she was brought out of status over 57 years after the virus went hot.

She was locked in place, her hand reaching to the window, as the stasis chamber did its job and froze her at her current age and state. The vaccine had a chance to work through her sister as she remained frozen, protecting her in the future from any infections as the world around her died. She had no clue about what happened, or why.. or why the doctor had chosen to save her or give her that watch.

It seemed only an instant before the chamber cracked open again and she gasped for breath. What had been a clean and sterile lab was now dirty and ruined.. and dark.

She stumbled her way out of the chamber and felt around. "Dr. Roberts? Hello? Is anyone there?" She could barely see, other than vague shapes, but somehow she knew she couldn't stay where she was.. she had to get out of the building..

The land around the old test area had fallen, and broken apart into some simple ruins. They were home from time to time to drifters, people who wondered the world aimlessly. The world was again, not the place she had known, only some small pants and blushes remained most growing along the remains of falling apart buildings and roads.

A drifter, a man who had just came into the area, heard the sounds of the young woman getting out and moved around closely. He knew that it came from one of the buildings. He knew it would be danger or something he could use for his own advantages. His eyes looked towards the building as he used a crowbar to break down the door. His eyes looked around. The place looked like one of those old time picture before the horror. He looked in and saw something move. He raised the crowbar for defense. His gray eyes focusing at the source to blink when he saw the woman, taken a back for a moment as for what he should do.

Katie fought her way out of the rubble bit by bit, struggling to get to clean air and the surface. What had happened to the lab? Why was it all so ruined? She shoved more rocks out of her way, scratching her arm and tearing her pink top as she finally broke through to daylight, the sun streaming down on her. She climbed to her feet, her tight blue jeans torn and shredded, her sneakers filthy and pink top barely managing to cover her decently. It had been a hard fight and she was exhausted, having struggled a long time to free herself. Panting for breath, she looked at the devastation around her in utter confusion. What had happened???

Her long brunette hair was coated in dust and dirt, hanging limply around her head. Her makeup was long ruined from all of the dirt, crusted under her nails and seeming to coat every inch of her. She'd never been so dirty in her life.

It took a moment before she saw the man standing just to the side of her, holding a crowbar. "P-please," she gasped out in a soft voice, "please, what's going on?" The dead wasteland surrounding her, the hot sun blazing down, she was confused and scared. "P-please," she said again, "please help me."

The drifter smirked as he looked at her and smirked as he dropped the crowbar and looked into the eyes of the young woman, she was scared, "Well now, I think I found something worth something," he said with a smirk as he leaned over and took pink top off the young girl and looked over her body. "I think you will make for a good sale," he said as he pressed her on her back, "Yes, a very good price woman," he said as he had plans to make some money now. Yet first he had a plan to get himself a woman for some fun for a bit. He used his strength to move himself over the scared woman, "to much clothes for this," mused to himself before ripping apart her already shredded jeans. "Yes, you will do nicely," he said with a evil little smirk on his face, the look in his eyes not differing from the smirk. He was a man who liked to make a fast bit of money, and she would give him that and some fast pleasure.

He smirked as he forced a kiss with her, it wasn't a bad kiss, but it was something as more of a test, that was something he didn't care about, he cared nothing about the fate of the female once he found a buyer for her. "Well now, I think I can help you, well not really, but I am going to help myself with you."

The man put the crowbar down and approached Katie. She watched with scared, tired eyes as he approached and said he found something worth something. She wasn't sure what the man meant - he was tall, strong, and looked like he was used to hard times.. as he moved closer, he reached out and easily tugged the pink top off of her, leaving her topless in the harsh sun. Immediately, instinctually, she put her hands up to cover her breasts, blushing and shrinking back, turning to run. She stumbled on the rocky surface, however, and fell to the ground as he kept talking, saying she had too much clothing on and ripping off her jeans as well.. They were so torn and ragged that it wasn't hard at all to do.

He positioned himself over her, overpowering her as he forced a kiss on her. She screamed and struggled, trying to shove him off of her, her legs trying to buck him off, but she couldn't get him to budge as he kissed her roughly, saying he was going to help himself with her. "No!!!" she managed to cry out. "No, please, you can't do this!" and scraped her nails down his back, trying to get him to get off of her. Trying to get away from this nightmare.

The mans mirked as he groped her forcefully, his fingers enjoying the feeling of her curves against his fingers as he looked into her eyes. He then pressed his lips against her own again before he got ready to slip off his pants and take her right there, then and there. He didn't though as he fell off Katie, dead as a doornail, shoot in the back if the head with a low caliber bullet. He slipped off her leaving her free.

"Woman, what the heck are you doing out here, are you stupid or something," A tall man said looking down at her, "this area is filled with crazy idiots, and criminals," he said moving over towards her taking his large coat off and putting it down so that she could pick it up and then use it at least a bit of clothing for herself. he looked down, "You look differently, strange," he commented as he blinked for a few moment, "come, if you don't want to end up on your back again."

She fought and squirmed, screaming out as the man continued to force his interests on her and Katie couldn't manage to get any leverage to get the monster off of her. His talk of selling her, of using her.. people didn't talk like that! Not civilized people! He was just an utter monster!

As she realized she wasn't going to win this fight - that she was about to be brutally raped - there was a loud crack in the air and his body collapsed, his weight pressing on hers a moment before the body slumped over and off of her, dead as dead could be.

She squinted into the bright sun as a tall man stared down on her, asking if she was stupid for being out there. He took his coat off and offered it to her, and she draped it over her shoulders and around her bared body without thinking twice. SHe just wanted to be covered and modest again! "I.. I woke up here. I.. I don't know where here is though. I mean, I know where here is, but it looks so different, you know?" She knew she was babbling, but her fear was overwhelming as tears streamed down her cheeks. "I... I.. th-thank you, sir, for helping me," she said in a stammering voice. "Can.. can you get me somewhere safe?"

The man looked down at her and blinked as he was confused, the man then took a card off the dead man and looked over at her. "Well now, it seems that you are a odd one, you don't know where you are ehh," he said to himself mostly as he looked at her, "come on follow me, I am sure I can find somewhere safe for a bit at least," he said as he helped her up.

"This is earth, the way things have been since the plague something like 54 years ago," he commented as he walked, "all the world looks like this, this area, just happens to be a area known for bandits and such," he said as he lead her out of the area carefully. "There are few cities, few places left in this world, but I find it hard you know none of this, it is reality to everyone Miss," he said confused by the woman and her lack of knowledge of the world's ways. "So, how did you get here, I mean in this mess you were in, don't find women much out here, most are slaves to various men."

Katie wrapped herself tighter in his large coat, cherishing its protection, as the strange man that had saved her talked to her.

"Earth? Plague? Fifty... fifty-four years? Slaves?? That.. that can't be right. It wasn't all like this yesterday. It must have.. the cryo.."

She paused for a moment, drifting back to all the doctor had told her before placing her in the chamber. She had been suspended for 54 years.. at least!

"I'm.. I guess you could say I was in a shelter before this and.. and was.. uhm.. spared the worst of it."

Slaves? Women the slaves to men? That couldn't.. God, that could have happened to her. "Please, I don't know the.. the way of things around here."

The man looked ather as she made her statements, he blinked, she was the strangest female he had ever seen in his whole life. He looked at her and then waited as he listened to the rest of her explination. So she had avoided the era of trouble some how, via some shelter, and then ended up here. He looked at her and knew already, one that she would be rather troublesome, and two that she was going to be uninformed on everything that was possible to be uninformed about. He looked her over closely, she was beautiful no doubt about that. The tall lanky bounty hunter was sure of that, maybe why he was willing to help her, or was it he had a soft spot for people way in over there heads. He wasn't sure either way.

"Well then, Miss, my name is Charles, and we will be at this safer place soon. There isn't many places that are really safe, and we will go over it, if you avoided all this, telling you all the things about the destruction of society, and well this, would take to long," He commented as he walked towards a rather large cave, where inside one could see a small camp set up. It was his, he used on his trips for bounties, when he traveled to various areas of the world.

"M-my name is Katie," she said as she extended a pale hand to her rescuer for shaking. With a look behind her at the dead body of her would-be rapist, she shivered again and walked closely next to Charles. Whatever was going on, she was going to have to depend on him to see her through it, she suspected. She just didn't have nearly enough information.

They walked toward a large cave with a camp inside of it, as the ruins of the institute fell in the background. "Charles," she began, "even if you don't tell me everything, some information would be nice. I mean, where are all the people? What is this about slaves? In my time.. er.. where I'm from, I mean, we didn't have slaves like that. Are you saying it's accepted here?"

"Well Katie, things are complex, not really a easy answer, but I guess I can say what I know," he commented as he walked ahead, "the plague hit at some point in the past, where it started is lost to history. It spread like a wildfire, and killed 9 out of every 10 people. Area once filled with life, were gone, cities, gone, the population of some countries dropped over 1 billion people almost over night. With such death, governments were unformable, so they broke down, about 54 years ago. Regional tribes almost took there place, and these people were bitter and filled with hate, oddly the plague hit women harder then men, at the end of the plague only say 5 million of the 100 million survivors were women. Women thus became a asset for any want to be regional lord, soon after they lost every right they had, in areas where they had rights. There are towns, but they are dangerous places, filled with wild violence, little law minus that of what the lord of the area wants remains," he explained as he walked, "I work killing scum like you ran into, they have bounties on there heads, wanted by some lord of some tribal area for something. I kill them collect something to prove that I did and go back and get paid."

Katie listened as she followed Charles, walking carefully across the strewn rubble in her torn sneakers. The world she walked through was a wasteland, a desert of pain, and she could almost hear the voices crying out as he talked..

Talk of death, of devastation. He was talking about numbers she couldn't even imagine. A billion dead, almost all women - it was insanity. Civilization had ended and the world had become war. And women had no rights, becoming pure property. She hugged the coat closely around her nude body, looking up into a bright sun beating down mercilessly.

"All dead," she murmured. "Everyone I know.. all dead." The idea seemed unreal, impossible. It was like a dream - a horrible dream she wasn't allowed to awaken from. She pushed a lock of her brown hair behind her ear and looked up at Charles. "Thank you.. thank you for saving me."

Charles walked quietly towards the cave, she had to had missed out on a lot, he wondered how she could of missed so much of the world's history, but he put it behind himself quickly. He looked ahead his eyes focused on the goal of where they were going. "No problem, I figured I might as well help, since I was here," he commented as he walked with her.

"Well now, I am guessing everything is going to be different for you now, you can travel with me, but things will get hard from time to time, things are not easy. It may be easier if you to go back where you came from," he commented as he led her to the tent area of his. "Well not much to each, but I don't mind sharing what I do have."
