There was never true silence in a city as it lived through the day and the night. No matter the hour the sounds of beings living, being and killing each other in an attempt to make the most of the short time they have on this earth. Kane was shaken from his thoughts as a group of young men and women stepped onto the subway train. He glanced at a few of the other people that were on the train and one my one they gave an almost imperceptible nod acknowledging they had made the vampires as rivals. No one moved as the strain started to move again.

The first signs of trouble only showed up in the last minute before the train started to slow. The vampires that had gotten on at the last stop started to look around as they sensed Kane and the other vampires with him. As soon as Kane and the others noticed this they pulled out containers of silver shavings. Once they had them open and had moved close enough to the group they through the silver over the vampires causing any skin that came in contact with the silver to burn. A split second later all hell broke loose as one of the vampires springe at Kane and he had to side step to avoid having it tackle him to the ground. He turned with it as he pulled out a dagger and used it to slash at its neck. He bared his fangs as he caught the scent of its blood and he slashed at it again as it tried to rise from the floor. He kept at it until its neck was shredded and the head was only attached by its spine when the train started to slow. Kane hesitated and a second later he felt himself being lifted into the air then thrown through the window. He slammed into the platform and rolled once before he came to a halt by slamming into one of the support columns.

When he was able to see clearly he looked back at the train and saw that half the windows were smashed and blood smeared over half of the train. He had started to get up but fell back down as his leg screamed at him. After that all the pain flooded over his mind and he had dug his fingers into the floor cracking the small tiles that made up the platform floor. He sat there as he watched the fight settle out and the other members of his group pry open the doors of the train and walk out of it laughing like nothing had happened. They walked over to him then two of them grabbed one arm each and pulled him up. They kept him off his leg since even though it was already healing if they let him put any weight on it the bones might heal improperly and would have to break it again. Instead of walking towards the tunnel that would bring them to the surface they walked over to the platforms edge and helped Kane down before everyone headed down the tunnels. Less than a minute Police and other emergency workers swarmed into the station and onto the platform. They interviewed everyone and then started to search the tunnels for Kane and the others but only found the mangled remains of the other vampires which all seemed to be missing their heads.

Allie threw on her jacket, a broad smile playing upon her lips. It was beyond late and her shift had finally ended. She was one of the few who actually didn't mind working later at night until the coffee shop closed. Most just complained, whining and wanting to work either mornings or afternoons. But not Allie. No. She enjoyed working until close. The people who came in tended to keep to themselves as opposed to those who showed up during the day. Being a bit introverted sort, she preferred the quieter customers.

It had been a long evening, however. And Allie was more than ready to head home. She knew she'd crash the moment her head hit the pillow, the thought a comforting one as she grabbed her bag and walked out the door, locking it behind herself. The air was cool against her skin, caressing it like velvet as she took in a long, deep breath.

Allie let out a sigh as she exhaled, her legs beginning to move and allowing her to begin her walk to the nearby subway station. It wasn't overly far, perhaps a few blocks or so. Despite the silence of night, she new the underground would be safe enough. She'd been taking the same train for a couple of years now at the same time nearly every day. Not once had she ever had trouble find her.

A street light sputtered as Allie approached the entrance leading down into the tunnels below the streets. She quirked a brow, wondering if there was something wrong with the lamp itself or the power allowing it light up. Suddenly, the light went out completely. She gasped audibly, her body jumping a bit as a wave of nerves washed over her. Heart racing, she chuckled nervously to herself and began the descent into the subway tunnels.

As Allie made her way down the cold, hard steps, loud noises began to bounce off the walls all around her. Smashes. Crashes. Glass breaking, metal scraping.

"What the..." Allie mumbled to herself, her hands beginning to shake. Just then, she reached into her pocket to grab her cell phone. When she took it out, she let out a soft groan, "Damnit." The thing was dead.

Contemplating what to do, Allie knew deep down that she should probably just turn around. Find a pay phone. Call a cab. That was the smart thing to do. But then, why didn't she just up and do that? She was glued to the spot, her body frozen as her brain told her to move, to back away. But her curiosity! Oh, it was a powerful thing, beckoning her forward to see what was happening in the depths below.

"Shit," Allie finally muttered as she resumed her descent into the subway tunnels.

When Allie reached the bottom, she let out a scream. She huddled on the floor against the concrete wall as she watched the slaughter occurring right there before her very eyes. What the hell was happening? A gang war? Criminals on the run? Whatever it was, she found herself wishing she'd turned around.

So stupid!

Instead, Allie found herself on the outskirts of a brutal battle between men where it was apparent their intent was to kill those opposing them. Terrified, clutching her knees to her chest, she suddenly felt tears rolling down along her cheeks. Finally, everything went silent and only one man was left standing. Blinking, she looked up, her eyes taking in the sight of the man who stood before her.

"Oh god," Allie whispered.

Allie recognized the man, had seen him several times over. He'd often come to the coffee shop she worked at. Always sitting in the same booth. No other waitress had ever served him save herself and now, here he was. Looming above dead bodies and twisted metal. Gasping, she got up and made to dart back up the stone steps. As she did so, her legs wobbled, her knees weak from what she'd just witnessed. Oh, her stomach felt ill and her hands! They wouldn't stop shaking. Just then, she tripped up the steps and slid back down, a tiny yelp escaping her lips as she fell.
