Daniel Steele was an easy going man, one who enjoyed the rugged lifestyle and the outdoors, which were pretty much the main reasons he’d taken over his father’s business after he’d passed away. He’d grown up on the ranch and knew it like the back of his hand, so he was the logical choice to take over, even if he was considered a bit young at the time. His mother left it in his capable hands and moved with her lover to Florida not to long after and there’d been no complaints from his much older sister since she’d already moved away and begun her own family. Once he had full control, he slowly built the ranch into a prosperous business, raising various types of cattle to sell for meat. He didn’t stop there though as he slowly branched out, adding goat herds for their milk and meet, chickens for the same, and added plots of farming land too.
Running the ranch was a full time job and as it grew, he had to add staff, bringing in different men and women to do various jobs. He had a staff of ten after the first three years and had grown it to twenty by the fifth year. The economy was tough but they were weathering it well, having so many different ways to make money. He’d even opened up a massage and spa business on the property and had some of the best massage staff in town. Daniel had been known to partake of their services a time or two also, since working the ranch was hard business, and it was well worth it. As he rode his horse up the ranch drive, having just come in from the cattle fields, he reigned to a stop near the porch. His gaze fell on the woman standing there, an older woman who took care of the house for him. She had a phone in her hand and a grim look on her face. “Your sister called, sir. She said to tell you that her daughter will be on the first flight tomorrow, as you’d agreed.” She studied him for a moment. “Did you really agree to take on a teenage girl, sir?”
He laughed. “I did indeed, Matilda. My sister thought it would be good for her daughter to get out into the open air and enjoy the sunshine a bit. There’s plenty to do here to keep a teenager out of trouble, don’t you think?” Matilda simply rolled her eyes and turned back towards the house, muttering about hormonal teens and girls under her breath. Handing the reigns of the horse off to another staff person, Daniel slid off and tromped up the stairs, making his way to his bedroom. Stripping clothes as he entered the room, he was soon in the bathroom, getting the shower running. Turning towards the floor length mirror, he took a moment to look himself over, smiling at what he saw. At 30, Daniel was still a young man and ranch life was good to him. Short brown hair covered his head in a ragged, edgy look and muscles filled his lean, hard body. His fingers traced over the jagged scar on his shoulder slowly, frowning just a bit, then over the faint one along his jaw line. Both were reminders of a hard working life but he didn’t mind. Whistling to himself, he slipped under the water, thoughts of his teenage niece on his mind. He hadn’t seen her since she was a little girl so he had no idea what she looked like or who she was; they were definitely in for an adventure.
