There is a legend, spoken mostly by young squires and simple country folk who dreamed of knighthood as an escape from the simple and monotonous life of a farmer. The legend hails from the age of the Dragon Warrior, a man who hundreds of years ago conquered kingdoms, slaughtered his enemies, and united the land under his banner. There has never been a warrior that could be called his equal and never a man who could boast such accomplishments, the mark he left on the land so great that to even jest that one might come close to his greatness is met by ridicule at best, a pummeling at worst.
But this legend does not concern the Dragon Warrior himself. It is of the one who trained him.
It is said that there is a forest by the name of Burntbark, the name coming from the strange variety of trees that grow there. Each one is black as coal and leaves an ash-like substance on the hands if touched, though each one is healthy with a head of dark green leaves forging a canopy above. The forest is fraught with dangers, with bloodthirsty wolves, vicious bears the size of twenty men, and cannibalistic bandits that eat women and children should they venture to close. Many have ventured into these woods seeking out the legend only to die at the teeth of these lesser beasts.
But if one were to brave the dangers of the forest, if one were somehow able to navigate through the endless miles of trees to the very heart of the woods, they would find a cave strewn with the bones of men and animals and with a mouth like that of gaping jaws. Within this cave lies the creature that trained the Dragon Warrior, a beast of such cunning and strength that any who spoke with it for but a day would become wiser than any man.
This is the Dragon of Burntbark Forest.
Many laugh at this, a dragon living in a forest when all know they only live in the high mountains to the west, far from civilization. But ask the villages nearest of Burntbark of their missing livestock; ask them of the poor maidens that went missing, then look into their eyes and deny that a dragon lives and breathes in those woods.
One must only approach his cave, stand their ground, and call out to the beast. If you are worthy he will take you and mold you into a fighter that rivals the Dragon Warrior himself, but be warned: Few have ever survived the dangers of Burntbark Forest and it is said even fewer have reached the cave, but none are said to have ever survived the Dragon.
