It was a Friday night. And in this household, it meant poker night For James Harrigan and his friends. Every week, they brought just about one hundred with them to gamble on. Nothing too serious, it was just supposed to be a fun little get together, but enough for them to actually try for it. No one liked giving that sort of money away for free.
To James's right sat his best friend since college, Adam Smith. He and James were both soon to approach their thirties and had managed to stay quite close even after college. The two had gone separate ways for grad school but managed to get back together after they had both finished. Across from them was a young couple that lived just across the street. The woman was Elise Bristone and her husband Colin. The two of them were a couple years younger yet than the other two.
As it was, this particular week marked the visit of his niece from his older brother and sister-in-law. The two were headed off on a business trip and wanted to leave her in his care. He didn't mind. Normally he would have left her with his wife while they were playing, but seeing as she wasn't home tonight, she was with them at the poker game, on his lap.
"The chips are gone." Adam said, giving the bowl a shake and looking inside. "Do you have anymore inside?" he asked.
"I think so." James replied, trying to think. "Let me go check." he added, grabbing the bowl. Gently he tapped his niece so she would get off his lap, before walking into the main part of the house. He headed into the kitchen and started opening cabinets, wondering where his wife put the chips.
"Why don't you come take a seat here?" Elise asked, a kind smile on her face, patting Colin's lap and looking over at James's niece.
