The alarm bell shattered the silence of the pre-dawn, sending Joshua shooting up in bed, his heart pounding out a rhythm that belonged in a jazz band, not inside his chest. Closing his eyes, the young man took a deep breath then another, slowly settling his body down. That damn alarm scared the crap out of him most mornings but he knew if he didn’t set it so loud he’d never wake up at all. He blamed it on his college days, where laziness was a given and sleeping in was a must; now that he was in the real world, working a full time job, he didn’t have that luxury anymore so the alarm became important to him. To say they had a love/hate relationship was an understatement, especially since this was his fourth one in four months, the last three meeting untimely deaths against the wall of his bedroom. Glancing over, he saw the scratched paint and felt a smile fall into place, remembering good times. He was also thankful that it was an outer wall, not the one shared with the other bedroom.
That thought made him smile because soon that room would have another occupant and that made him smile. He’d had his time at college and now it was his little sister’s moment. Milly had finally graduated from high school and decided to go to the same college he had and to help her with the cost of it all, he’d offer to let her move into the spare bedroom. He had no use for it and it would be nice to have his sister around again; he’d missed her after he moved out and since he stayed in the area after he graduated, he never got enough time to see her on his infrequent visits home. Knowing he needed to get ready for her arrival, Joshua hopped out of bed and padded into the bathroom, pausing just long enough to look at himself in the mirror. At 23, he had the lean, muscular body of a young man with short black hair and brown eyes. He had a few scars scattered here and there from his childhood and sported a dragon tattoo on his shoulder blade and a snake one that coiled at the base of his neck, both something he’d gotten in the last year that no one in his family knew about. Satisfied, he hopped in the shower, hoping he hadn’t gotten a late start to the day.
