Elizabeth was in pain. The stabbing sharpness that coursed through her side caused her eyes to prick with tears. Frustrated from her lack of control and the helpless state she was in.
The wait for the handsome stranger to come back to her seemed an eternity. When he lifted her so gently, she’d been fully aware of how his roughened hands smoothed over her soft skin. Her breath caught in a sharp hiss, as his cape tore away from her naked body. The instant temperature change causing her skin to tighten and pucker. As he lay her down, and leaned to cover her, she felt the slightest brush of his hand over her revealed flesh at her side, just under her breast, she tired to see if it had been intentional. But his face was locked in concentration as he tucked her into the litter. Softly, she whispered a thank you, unsure if he’d even heard it.
The movement of the horse was agony, every jostle she felt in spades as they rode. Her eyes were closed, trying to focus on anything put the pain. She wasn’t certain, but thought she likely lost consciousness at least one more time before the movements of the horse finally stopped.
The night air was brisk, but she was warm as she watched him stretch out on the ground and close his eyes. In the soft flickering light she could see his features, the flame light licking and dancing on his face. He was handsome, rugged from time spent riding and patrolling. From his uniform, she was certain he was cavalry, but he seemed less like the pompous graduates of WestPoint who were more prim and priss, uneducated in the world and more a heady combination of wild and righteous, a man who had seen things.
She took a breath, and instantly regretted it, she blinked several times trying to stave off the wave of blackness she felt clawing at her.
She moved her uninjured side carefully, wiggling her hand free, she lay her arm above the furs, resting it across her chest, she closed her eyes of her own free will. That was better. She fell into a sleep, lulled by the sound of her pulsing blood in her ears, hoping that when she opened them this had all been a nightmare.
Aside from the stranger, he can stay.
