Walter Smith came west after the civil war to make a fresh start out of life. He settled in California finding a nice spot of land about 300 acres in size near the horseshoe lake. After staking his calm Walter began building his home and barns where he planned on raising cattle & horses but Walter wasn't the only person to come west after the war.
Others came west, some were good people who would work hard to build new lives just like Walter, but others were only looking for what they could take from those who were powerless to stop them. One man like that who came west was Victor Crenshaw, he along with his brothers John & James arrived in California early in the year 1880. The Crenshaw's came from a very rich family back east but that wasn't good enough for a man like Victor, he wanted to build an empire of his own. They ended up in the small town called Lane's Crossing where Victor decided then and there too take over everything he could.
Victor quickly bought up everything that he could in the small town and what he couldn't buy John who by now was known as Black Jack & Jimmy would force the people to give up. The law couldn't stop this because Victor had already bought the Town Marshall making sure that what ever his brothers did they wouldn't get in trouble for it. Soon Victor had so much power that he changed the name of the town to Victorville.
Most everyone had given into Victor giving him what ever he wanted even if they had to leave their homes and start fresh somewhere else. The only hold out was Walter Smith who owned the 300 acres just south of town. It was the best land in the county with beautiful green grass a large clear lake that was perfect and shaped like a horseshoe which gave the lake it's name. Victor had bought everything north of town where he placed his own ranch, he also bought the best land to the west all he needed was Walter's land, but Walter refused to sell the land at ant price. To make sure that Victor wouldn't get his filthy hands on his land Walter made out a will naming Katie his niece as the owner if he should die. Walter never had any children of his own and loved his niece dearly, she was an only child and he would spoil her every chance he had.
In 1882 Walter was found dead in the woods near the horseshoe lake, his body was taken to town. The Town Marshall said that it was an unfortunate hunting accident but his body looked more like it had been beaten before he was shot. People in town believed that it was Jack & Jimmy's handy work to get what Victor wanted but they didn't know that Walter's niece Katie was now the owner of the land. She & her husband Martin arrived in town that same year living in the house that her uncle built. For the next few months Victor tried to buy the land from Katie who refused to sell just like Walter did. No matter how much Victor offered Katie always said no which angered Victor greatly. It was now the spring of 1883 and Jack & Jimmy were on their way to the ranch where Katie & Martin living to force her to give up the land.
