“I still cannot believe you managed to talk me into this, Ash...” Grumbling, Anna kicked a stray rock across the pavement in aggravation as she followed her older sister (older by 2 minutes, anyways) along the sidewalk, heading to the downtown area. The older twin seemed to be ignoring Anna, humming as she continued on her way, the sound of her heels clicking as she strode forward, a big smile lighting up her pretty face.
Obviously, Ashley was excited and a little bit nervous, as she kept fishing her compact out of her purse to quickly scrutinize her reflection and pat her softly curled crimson hair for a moment or two before snapping it shut and dropping it back in the bag. While the two girls were completely identical in almost every way, Ashley had spent a great deal of time curling her hair and applying her makeup, while Anna had simply pulled hers back into a neat ponytail, wearing perhaps only a bit of mascara and plain lip balm.
Their outfits were completely opposite to each other, as Ashley had chosen a very pretty outfit, a pure white sundress that clung tightly to her bosom, low enough to show off just a hint of cleavage and much of her ivory skin, her skirt falling to about mid-thigh; Anna preferred jeans and a T-shirt and a comfortable pair of sneakers – just by looking at the two of them one would notice that while they are exactly the same they were also very different from each other.
Ashley could hear her sister grumbling in the background, walking as annoyingly slow as she possibly could just as a reminder of how much she had not wanted to come. It had taken a fair amount of bribery, including her entire allowance for that week and a deal that she would take over Anna’s household chores to convince her sister to come along with her. Besides, it wasn’t like she was planning on keeping Anna around long – she just wanted to make sure the guy she was meeting was not a total creep, and if she liked him she would dismiss Anna and continue her date alone.
While her twin knew this was a date, what Ashley did not confide in her was that this was a date with a boy she had only talked to on a social networking site. Of course, Ashley knew the risks of meeting online strangers and had already been given the lecture by their parents to be especially vigilant or else risk ending up in a ditch somewhere, but they were living in the dark ages. The online experience was one that was quickly growing for people of all ages, and if one was smart one could easily find someone without falling into the trap of an axe-murdering rapist. She knew this boy, like really knew him. He said his name was David, that he was 18 and that he was attending the local community college. He had pictures, and a nice profile, and had been talking to her for a couple weeks now. Already, Ashley was sure she was only minutes away from love at first sight! “Give it a rest, Anna.” Ashley finally responded as they came to a stop at a crosswalk parallel to the cafe she had been told to meet David at. Squinting brilliant green eyes, she scanned the few people she saw sitting on the patio but did not see anyone that looked like David, so he must have decided to wait inside – it was a warm day. “This won’t take long, and then you can go back to throwing balls or climbing trees or whatever it is that you do.”
Anna could only roll her identical emerald eyes as she watched her sister pull out the compact for the 17th time since they had left home and shoved her hands into her pockets. She really did not understand why she had to be dragged along to meet some boy that was a friend of a friend at school – why not bring that friend or the friend of the friend? Why not go alone if he wasn’t a total stranger? Whatever. So long as this did not take very long it would have been an easy 20 bucks to make in a day, and a week without having to do dishes or vacuum and all that. She would take off once she saw that her sister was happy and doe-eyed and head back home or to the park or something. The crosswalk icon flashed green, signalling the pedestrians that they could cross, and with a shrug of her small shoulders Anna followed Ashley, thinking she might as well grab an iced coffee once they were in there. “Let’s just get this over with.”
