Jake was tired. Mentally, emotionally, spiritually...tired.
He had gotten a text...A TEXT! To tell him that his Brother had spent the inheritance before it even cleared the estate. He wasn't going to send his brother to jail, but he wasn't going to fight. It wasn't worth it. His family was gone.
As a forest ranger, he liked solitude most times. And keeping a girlfriend was tough. He'd had a dog for years, but when Chagga died last year...well, he just couldn't replace her that easily.
5'10" of very lean muscle, he easily scaled the rolling back hills and went deeper into the mountains. Almost no one came out this far. He was over 170K from any cell reception. Or anything else of man. But the streams were mostly clean and the snakes not too bad.
He'd volunteered to go and count trees and rare animals...it was a gift from his boss and he knew it. He had the locations of food and clothes caches, so he'd be OK there.
Finally, he reached a quiet glen, over looking a brook.
His steel gray eyes scanned the area and he shook out his shoulder length sun bleached brown hair. This would do. He spread a blanket under the shade of a tree and was asleep almost instantly, resting in only his shorts and t-shirt.
