"How many are in there?"
"30... maybe more. Less than 50."
"Hmph. Why so many in one place?"
"They are preparing a ritual, so that we may have extra power to lay a siege on a fort to the north."
"I see. Thank you for the help."
"Yes... now please... mercy..."
"Funny," Lode said quietly as he ran the broadsword quickly through the red and black creature's neck, severing it's throat until it's head popped off from his grip on it's curled horns. "I didn't think your kind even knew the word."
Lode stood and tossed the head aside as it disintegrated to ash, sheathing his broadsword on the back of his armor. The armored suit he wore around his chest was covered in blood and soot, though underneath is was a gleaming silver that fit snugly against his chest and over his shoulders. Chain-mail covered his arms and guards over his forearms were covered in markings that could wound a demon and protected him from hell-fire. A leather armor covered his legs that didn't offer as much protection as his upper body armor, but allowed him more free range movement. His jet-black hair was cut close to his head for practical purposes and covered various scars that he had gotten over the years. His eyes were a pale brown, but his left eye was blue from blindness.
Here stood, a killer of hundreds of demons, a scourge of the church and man, and a warrior.
Lode had recently caught wind of movement from some demons, and after taking one of them hostage and torturing him, he had finally found where they were all centralizing. Usually hunting demons was a long and arduous process, you hunted a single prey for days and then when you found it, you usually had to draw them out to mortal form or kill their host. This would be the first time Lode would be able to make a real strike against their numbers, killing many of them all at once and disrupting whatever plans they had against the church.
Approaching the cottage that had an underground dungeon built from some naturally-occurring caves that the inhuman spawn had carved out, Lode calmly knocked. When a small child answered the door, Lode nicked her face with a blade made of elder wood and she shrieked in inhuman pain before he beheaded her with his broadsword. Stepping inside he quickly dispatched the three other demons, currently possessing human hosts before he kicked in the cellar door that lead down to the dungeon.
Carving his way through throngs of the demons, some inside a human, some in their natural demonic forms, Lode reached the ritual chamber and saw cages filled with supernatural creatures of various shadow and bane. He hesitated for a moment as he gaped in wonder at all the monsters and beasts, allowing the last two demons of the place to tackle him and start beating him to the ground with inhuman blows. His body shook as they pounded him into the stone floor, cracking it with each blow. That was the risk of a demon hunter; you had to keep pressing the advantage or they would turn the momentum of battle against you and that was it. You died.
Except Lode didn't except limits or mistakes. Grabbing a demon by the head and shoving it into his chest plate as hard as he could, it staggered long enough for him to keep his hold on it's head and slam it against his fellow hellspawn. The two fell on top of each other though one of them kicked Lode so that he flew 25 feet into one of the cages. He got up slowly and saw a naked woman, very beautiful, almost glowing, obviously a werewolf. Spitting his blood out from between his teeth and pressing his thumb into the cut above his eye to cauterize it for a moment, Lode swept his arm out instinctively to the left, knowing one of the demons were going to flank him and caught it on the nose. He then stabbed his broadsword backwards, getting the other demon in the chest. Swinging the demon now impaled on his sword at the fellow, he pinned them both into the ground with his sword and grabbed their heads, one at a time, and yanked them off, the runes on his arm guards glowing as he did so.
There. All dead.
Sitting on the floor for about ten minutes, catching his breath, Lode finally stood and released a fairy, cutting her iron prison open with his tempered-steel, demon-slaying sword.
"You are now honor-bound to me imp. You are to release all these creatures and burn this place to the ground. Once that's done, your debt is repaid," Lode explained to her, knowing how the Faerie politics and mindsets worked, and she nodded eagerly before setting off to open the other cages, giving Lode the opportunity to go off and disappear again.
