In retrospect, there were a few things Paige and Laurie shouldn’t have done.
They shouldn’t have driven back home for spring break. Flying is so much faster, and, as it turns out, safer. It’s not like they were short on cash. Sure, Paige wanted to take her newly purchased 2003 open top Corvette for an extended spin. But when you’re first cousins born within 2 weeks of each other, and had been inseparable since you were toddlers all the way to going to the same college, do you really need to bond over a road trip? I mean, they practically knew one another better than themselves. So that was a bad call, Paige.
They shouldn’t have played car games. Seriously, who plays car games anymore? Aren’t they Darwin-ed by in-built DVD players and iPads? They don’t even remember the exact game they played, all it mattered was Laurie, the passenger, had lost. And losers had to do a dare.
It was late afternoon on a warm and sunny day. This stretch of the country was breathtaking, with its rolling golden plains and mountains in the distance, all under a speck-less, clear sky. The Corvette’s top was down and Paige and Laurie were in extremely high spirits. And it did sound like a good idea at that time…
“Flash someone.”
“Paige!“ Laurie had expected something along these lines yet she still sounded incredulous, but… “No way!”
“Oh come on.” Paige said, keeping only one eye on the road, a devilish grin on her pretty face. “How long’s it been since anyone saw those cute boobies of yours?”
“Er… two days?” It was the truth. They giggled.
They passed an SUV with a family of four. The dad stared at them, so did the 14 year-old kid at the back.
“Derek doesn’t count.” Paige paused. “And it’ll be fun.”
The two looked each other in the eyes for a split moment. Telepathic communication achieved… it happens when you’ve been best friends for 20 years.
“Okay! Woah!” Paige wore a triumphant smile and turned back to the highway. “Errr... that.” She pointed to a truck about 3 car lengths ahead and stepped on the gas to bring the Corvette side by side with it. Laurie took a deep breath and checked herself in the side mirror.

Actually, scratch that. There were a lot of things they shouldn’t have done.
