The day began like any other. Noah stirred in his bed as the early morning rays of the sun tore through the curtains of his bedroom window. Nothing would have pleased him more than to just roll over, put the rays of the sun at his back, and try to go back to sleep but it was Monday. This meant that his parents would not be home today and he was responsible for his little sister, Paige. Well, he knew that Paige wasn’t his real sister but she didn’t. Noah was adopted, you see, and Paige was their parent’s real child. They had adopted him after their mother was told that she would never be able to bear a child but no more than two years after bringing Noah into their lives, she became pregnant with a child of her own against all odds. Paige had never been told that her older brother was adopted. It just didn’t seem important. Still, aside from the occasional impure thoughts that crossed his mind about Paige, Noah treated her like any good older brother would. He knew that she looked up to him and he tried to set a good example for her. Sure, they fought from time to time and he picked on her from time to time but Noah was always there for her; the one person whom she could really count on.
Their parents weren’t around much. Their father worked for the government, doing work which he was not allowed to talk about outside of his office, and their mother worked as a full-time doctor in the city. Both worked long hours and often times were away from the house for days at a time due to their commute. Sometimes it just wasn’t worth the effort to commute back home between work schedules. If they did, they wouldn’t get much sleep and considering their jobs, that wouldn’t have been good for either of them.
Noah and Paige had grown up with nannies and until four years ago, there was always a caretaker for them there at the house. When Noah turned eighteen, however, the nannies had all been fired and Noah was appointed as Paige’s caretaker and given a bank card to their parent’s joint bank account. You couldn’t trust most boys his age with that kind of responsibility but Noah had always been a few steps ahead in the maturity department. Of course, sometimes he wasn’t thrilled to always have to care for Paige but he wasn’t doing it for free. So long as he cared for Paige and didn’t abuse the bank card that he was given, he was paid six hundred dollars a week, cash in-hand, from his parents. It certainly wasn’t something that he felt that he could complain about.
A groan escaped Noah’s throat as he rolled over and sat up in bed. Looking around his bedroom, one wouldn’t be able to tell much about the twenty-two year old young man. Unlike most young men his age, he didn’t have too many things hanging from his walls or anything else notably special about his living chambers. The carpet, curtains, and bedsheets were black, the walls and ceiling were painted a dark shade of grey, and his bedroom furniture was all redwood. Though the room was dark, it was bland and neutral.
His bed was pushed into the far back corner of his bedroom, opposite to his closet in the other back corner. Across the room, along the front was a TV stand with a thirty-two inch television and his favorite video game system, his X-Box. Opposite the closet and the television stand was the door that connected his bedroom to the rest of the house. A large, three drawer dresser sat between the bedroom door and the TV stand, a wardrobe sat between the closet and the bedroom door, and a nightstand was tucked along the wall beside the bed. The only two objects on top of any of the bedroom furniture were a lamp on the nightstand and a laptop on top of the dresser.
Knowing that it wouldn’t be long before Paige got up herself, if she wasn’t up already, Noah slipped out of his bed and rose his hands above his head in a mighty stretch. Noah was a healthy boy of unassuming appearance. He stood roughly six feet and two inches tall and boasted the physique of an athlete. His body was tight and toned, molded from nearly ten years of karate and four years on his old high school’s baseball team. His skin was tanned from being outside, his hair was a dark earthy brown, and his eyes a matching chocolate brown.
Having just gotten out of bed, his short brown hair was messy and his face sported what you could call a ‘five-o’clock shadow’. If he didn’t shave every morning, Noah was pretty sure that he would be able to grow a decent beard in only two short weeks. Well, maybe that was an exaggeration but still, the point is that he needed to shave. The only clothes that he had on were a pair of black gym shorts that he had started wearing to bed after the first time that Paige had been woken up by a thunderstorm and came running in to sleep with him. That was the last time that he slept naked.
Deciding to take care of his morning shave and shower first, Noah moved across his bedroom and slipped out into the hall overlooking the front room of the large house. Paige’s bedroom was between his own and t bathroom so on his way past, he stopped and poked his head in to see if she had gotten up yet. Normally, he would be waking her up for school now but summer break had started last week. He was sure that Paige would be thankful for that.
