The real estate agent was thrilled to finally be taking down the for sale sign on the old Jeffery house. The house had been an eyesore on her books for over 2 years. Even though the house had a fresh coat of paint both inside and out.. the old musty carpets had been replaced with nice new ones.. the old house completely redone inside and out. And still it sat on her books. It was like everybody how came to look at it all got an uneasy feeling about the old place and couldn't get out of the house fast enough.
She couldn't say she blamed them. The house always gave her the creeps like somebody was always watching her. She tried never to go into the house alone always waiting outside for the people to come to look at the house, and making sure she left when they left.
A few of the contractors had reported strange incidents two of them even quitting and saying that they would never work on the house again.
So when the man from New Jersey purchased the house from just the brochures she was glad to finally be rid of the thing. The man and his family where moving halfway across the country for the mans work and he was unable to see the house in person.

She walked across the lawn and pulled the sign from the yard.. as she turned she could swear there was a shadow standing in one of the upstairs bed rooms. Well not her problem anymore, let the new owners deal with it she thought to herself as she hurried back to her little VW and drove out of there.

Two days later a moving truck pulled up in front of the house.

There was a shadow in the house, and the contractors had not just been seeing things. Nathan Jeffery had been dead for nearly 15 years now, and had been stuck in this house ever since. All he had wanted was some company, but no one liked someone they couldn't see it seemed.
Oh, well, he thought. There was a family moving in soon, and if he had heard the agent correctly, they had a teenage daughter. Younger people, teenagers and children, were more receptive to him it seemed...more open minded. He liked that about them. He couldn't wait to meet the new family.

Amber's father couldn't be more proud of the great deal he got on the old house.. heck that real estate agent was practically giving the house away. Good neighborhood, good schools, nice house.. what else could you ask for.

Later that afternoon the family car pulled up the long drive way, with Amber in the back seat.. 15 years old and today she wasn't a pleasant child.. she didn't want to move, she would have no friends.. a new school already half way throw the school year. ... The trip cross country found her whiny and cranky... she was not even the slightest bit impressed as the pulled up in of the huge house.

"Where's my room dad" she huffed. "Its right up there on the second floor honey" he said as he pointed to a huge corner window .. that corner of the house. "Good I'm going to my room and start putting things away." she told him as she walked away into the house.

Nathan watched invisibly as the girl marched up the stairs and right into his room! How wonderful! Not only was there someone to talk to, but she would be right there with him!

He smiled his invisible smile and followed her into the room, watching her as she started to unpack, wanting to say something but unsure how to begin. Instead, he opted for a little mischief instead. Kids seemed to like that sort of thing.

Waiting patiently, he took his chance when she turned her back to some of her unpacked things and quickly rearranged them around the room, then waited for her to turn around and notice.

The room was huge .. had it's own walk in closet and it's own bathroom, the bathroom looked new except it hand one of those old claw foot bathtubs. "Oh that's going to be so nice to soak in" she said to herself as she brought her shampoos and soaps in and placed them inside the cabinet. Then she walked back out to her bed room and unpacked the box with her stuffed animals and placed then neatly around her bed. Just then her called.. walking out into the hall way and leaning over the railing, "What is it Mom?" .. "Amber honey do you know which box has my hair dryer in it.".. "No Mom what would make you think I'd know where you packed your stuff?"

Turning around she went back into her room... "What!?" she stood there in shock her hands on her hips .. all of her stuffed animals where piled in the middle of the bed. ... She walked over and fixed the animals. Then brought something else into the bathroom... when she came back out the animals where piled in the middle of her bed again..

Walking back out into the hall way and leaning of the railing again, "Mom knock it of.. it's not funny."
"Whats not funny Amber?" her mother said walking into sight in the down stairs hallway.
"ah never mind mom." she said walking back into her bed room......

This time.. her animals where back all neatly arranged around her bed again.

Moving all of her stuff around had been fun, but it lacked the directness he really wanted. He decided it was time to up the stakes a bit.

Once again he waited a bit, letting her keep unpacking until her Mom called to her again. Seeing the perfect opportunity he chuckled audibly and tossed one of the stuffed animals, a little pink hippopotamus, at the back of her head.

When the soft blow connected he hushed again and watched her reaction, a playful grin on his invisible face.

After the stuffed animals had finally stopped moving around on there own Amber was neatly putting things in there draws.. shirts .. bras and panties.. She kept looking up in the mirror half expecting something behind her.. she couldn't shake the feeling like something was watching her.

Then she heard her mother calling her.. "Coming mom!" she yelled as she headed out of her room.. suddenly one of her stuffed animals flew off her bed and hit her in the back of the head and she could hear someone laughing at her .. she let out a tiny squeak of surprise. "what the hell" she said out loud as she turned around and looked at the empty room. "Who is there? Who just did that." but all there was was silence.

She bound down the stairs, " Mom... somethings strange about this house"
"What do you mean dear?" her mother asked.
"I don't know.. somethings in my room"
"what is it a bug or something?" her mother asked
"No... Mom... I think this house is... well.. haunted."
"aw come on sweetheart, I know your not happy about the move but you know it's important to you father."
"Mom! that has nothing to do with it! ... My .. my stuffed animal just flew across the room.. and I heard someone laughing."
"Sweetheart you probably heard some kids from down the street .. now come on and sit down and have some lunch."
"Yeah but mom the kids down the street didn't have nothing to do with my stuffed animal flying across the room"
"Oh honey it probably just fell down"
"Yeah! fell down and hit me in the back of the head!" Amber said.

After lunch Amber helped her mother clean up then went back into her room, half expecting to see somebody.. but the room was empty .. and everything looked like she had left it.
She walked over and laid down on the bed and switched on her TV

Nathan snickered to himself as he listened to the conversation between Amber and her mother. Of course the older woman didn't believe he was really there. After all, the was no such thing as ghosts, right?

He waited, watching silently as they ate lunch, and decided to make a move only after Amber had started to watch TV. This time, he would go all out.

Reaching out with a spectral hand, he plucked the TV remote from Amber's hand and whispered, "Hello, Amber," his voice echoing softly from everywhere and nowhere all at once.

"ahhhh" she gasped sitting up.. "Who is there? Who is it!?" she said.. her head whipping from side to side looking for whoever it was that spoke...
"Come on out and show yourself.. or ... or I'm going to call the police and tell them we have an intruder in the house"

She moved over to her night table and picked up the phone as if she where going to make good on her threat ...

"I'm going to call now who is it!" this time sounding more demanding.

"My name is Nathan," he responded softly, his voice still carrying that strange everywhere effect, "And I'm not here to hurt you."

He moved quickly and invisibly, removing the phone line from the wall as he spoke again, "I just wanted to welcome you to my house."

Now, he shut the door softly, "Please don't be afraid Amber. I just want to be your friend. I've been alone for a very long time."

"Your house?? but .. but where are you? ...
She had the phone in her hands with a dial tone.. then suddenly the phone went dead.. she didn't see the cord come out of the wall.

"Nathan.. Nathan? what do you mean this is your house... my dad just bought it"

her heart was pounding... this couldn't be happening.. she was hearing things .. the move had more of an effect on her then she thought... As she watched the door slowly swing closed.

"but why can't I see you? where are you hiding? is this some kind of a trick?"

"You promise not to panic if I tell you the truth?" Nathan asked calmly, "This is -technically- your Dad's house, now. But it was mine first."
The ghost chuckled slightly, almost wistfully, "Until my wife decided she needed the life insurance money."

"You mean you where murdered?"
"So.. so you are a ghost? but why are you still here?"
