Monday: 8pm
Derrick Taxton entered the restaurant at exactly 8:05pm just like he did every Monday. It was his ritual for every week. He always came into the restaurant ordered the same thing and ate it while he sat reading the newspaper for the week. This week was yet another grim set of circumstances for the world. He sighed a little. He wondered how long it was going to take the waitress to come serve him. It was usually not long since the dinner rush was over. He had studied the restaurant's trends and knew when to come in to best avoid having to deal with so many people. It was not the noisiness that got to him when the place was crowded. It was the people themselves.
Derrick had never been a big fan of people. He always had a bit of disdain for others, because he always had this belief in him that he could never shake. That people always looked down on him for one reason or another. This had led in him in all kinds of directions in his life. He had chosen his career as a computer analyst because of it, he had made himself physically fit because of it, and finally he studied others because of it.
Of 10 people in the restaurant, he could make an assessment on all of them. 2 of them were a couple where one of the partners were cheating, and the other knew but didn't want to say anything about it in the hopes that it would stop. the third person, was a loner like Derrick, except that the reason this guy was a loner was because he had lost his wife. By the mournful expression on the man's face, Derrick could assume that the wife's death was recent. The fourth was a woman who seemed very pretty but also very lost. Her beauty was costing her as it seemed that men were just using her for sex rather than trying to be with her for meaningful relationships. Derrick could tell this by the way she was looking down at the classifieds while she sipped her wine. Each ad seemed to make her smile a bit. The fifth and sixth were two men who were drinking their sorrows away together. Both of them were married, yet they were unhappy with their wives for one reason or another. Derrick would usually be able to get more out but they were drunk and obnoxious which made him careless about knowing more. The seventh, eighth, and ninth were all friends in a heated conversation over what was the best movie to come out last week. Of course the guy were arguing for the action flick while the girl argued for the more romantic film. And the tenth, she was a beautiful but cold looking woman who like Derrick, was here at the same time every Monday. He had made several observations of her over the long while that they had both been in the restaurant together. She was once a mother, he could tell that. She had lost her child through one means or another. Derrick had been trying to determine that but couldn't just through observation alone. Also she seemed friendly to the waiters and waitresses, but the moment they left she returned to her cold and glossed over expression. Derrick wondered about her and if one day he should bridge the gap ad talked to her to find her troubles, just to satisfy his curiosity. But he refrained for today. It was not a good day to do that kind of thing, but some day he would.
Derrick looked away from those around him and saw his reflection in the shiny metal side of the napkin holder. He liked his current look, with his brown hair cut short to nearly military length, and how his dark brown eyes caused a bit of a contrast with the white polo shirt that he was wearing. He gave himself a smile and saw his beautiful white teeth reflected back at him. There was not a place on his teeth that were not white. He was a firm believer in presenting yourself well. He had to be with the way that he felt that people were already looking down on him, he did not need to have any more of a reason for them to continue.
He looked up from the napkin holder and wondered when the waitress was going to arrive.
