Azriel hummed softly to herself as she walked through the woods, gathering the various wild fruits and berries she would find. She never really did mind preforming her duties as a gatherer, and she felt it was far easier than being a hunter. Though, her height did come as an inconvenience at times. Especially when she had to pick fruit from high in the tree tops.

Her sensitive ears began to perk up slightly, picking up the sound of twigs snapping on the ground below the tree in which she had been perched while picking apples. She looked around cautiously, not knowing if she would see one of her own kind or some sort wild animal. Nevertheless, she looked down, her hair falling down her shoulder as she hung upside down from a brach.

Jemel cursed under his breath as his foot broke that twig. 'Some stealthy hunter I sure am.' He thought he made his way threw the thick forest bush. He had caught a brief scent of something, but couldn't put his finger on it. What troubled him more was the fact that the scent smelt very familiar to him. Slowly, he picked his way towards the tree Azriel was hanging from, his ears swiveled around, taking in every sound of the forest in case a meal presented itself to him.

His eyes scanned the ground floor, searching for something to eat before slowly moving up to the tree tops themselves. Being a natural hunter, his eyes were made to pick out small details and spot things normally hidden. And the first thing he saw was a pillowly bundle of hair dropping down over top him. Grinning, he quickly jumped up and popped his claws out, digging them into the thick tree bark and began to climb up. This is it! Don't blow it now Jemel!' He told himself as he climbed higher and higher.

Azriel's eyes were hardly as keen as her ears, it wasn't as though she had bad vision or anything, it was just hard to see everything on the ground from her current elevation. It didn't appear to be anyone around, about the time she would have seen Jemel he was standing directly beneath her. She may have been somewhat flexible but not enough to lean her head back to see him. She shrugged the noise off as small squirrel or maybe a bird. Afterwords, she would turn herself back upright, sighing softly to herself as she brushed her hair back off her shoulder and grabbed her satchel of fruit. She placed it over her shoulder before she started to climb down the tree, quite unaware that someone else was on their way up.

Jemel slowly made his way up, taking great care not to make a sound. His ears perked up as the heard movement from up higher, alerting him to the presence of what he had saw on the ground. As she started to climb down, he froze up stiff. "Azriel?" He said out loud, forgetting that he was trying to stay quiet; but the sight of his childhood friend making her way down with a pile of food shocked him. He stayed in one spot, directly in front and underneath her, his eyes staring up at hers, his claws digging in deep to the tree to prevent him from falling.

Azriel heard her name being called and blinked rapidly. She looked about the tree branches quickly before looking down and seeing Jemel's face beneath her. She gasped slightly, recognizing that he was a cat but not as her friend. She hadn't seen him in quite a while, and she was too gripped with fear of being captured to realize that it was him. She got a good grasp on her bag before she leaped from the tree, lading on the ground below them, and she took off running.

As Azriel leaped down, Jemel turned his head to watch her move, his hand reached out towards her. "Stop, don't run Aziel!" He called to her. Unfortunately, the turning of his body and removal of his hand from the tree trunk caused him to loose his balance. His arms flailed about, trying to steady himself but failing. His head collided with a thick branch, but managed to turn him around, and thus allowing Jemel to land on his feet.

Rubbing his head a little, he winced at the pain from cracking his head. Shaking it off, he picked himself up and began to dash threw the bushes, trying to track down Azriel before she got too far away. His eyes scanned the area as he ran, looking for her as she zigged zagged away. Finally catching a glimpse of her tail, he turned on his speed and closed the distance between them. Once close enough, Jemel pushed himself off the ground, his front paws extended out as he leaped, seeking to pin her to the ground so she'd stop and realize who he was.

(Sorry, I couldn't help but have some humor with him:p)

Azriel looked back, but only for a second, as she heard her name being called. "He couldn't possibly be . . ." She thought to herself as she slowed down just a bit. She shook her head dismissively, the sound of him crashing down onto a branch bringing her back from that thought. She began to resume her previous speed as her ears picked up the sound of footsteps closing in on her. A smile began to form on her lips as she saw the entrance to her hiding place was not far off.

Just as she thought she would be able to elude the cat pursuing her, her foot caught part of a tree root, and she fell face forward, letting out a light squeak as she hit the ground. She whimpered lightly and winced lightly from the pain of her now twisted ankle. She turned her body over to look behind her, gasping lightly as she saw the cat lunging out to her in a pounce position. Her body shook with fear as she covered her head with her hands.

Jemel's paws managed to hit Azriel's shoulders, pinning her to the ground like he wanted, but with her face still covered by her hands, he knew she'd be unable to see who he was. His legs slowly moved to push hers apart in order to prevent her from getting up and running away. His left paw slid away from her shoulder and started to caress her hair, feeling the strains fall threw his fingers. His right paw gently came up and pulled her hands away from her face so she could see him.

"Long time there mousy girl!" He said in a chipper voice, his tail swishing back and forth in a playful mood. "I see you're still gathering food this deep in the woods. What was it you use to say? 'It always tastes better when you've got to put in a little extra work'? Or something like that? Any way, it doesn't matter. It's soooo good to see you!" Jemel said as his paws swiftly scooped Azriel up into a big hug, her chest pressing into his as he did.

Azriel squeaked out as Jemel landed on top of her, blushing behind her hands as she felt his legs separating her own. She shook slightly in fear and squirmed about beneath him, thinking he was about to force himself on her. She squeaked again as he pulled her hands away from her head, turning her face away from him with her eyes closed as her body continued to shiver for a moment.

Her eyes squinted open slightly as she heard a semi-familiar voice paraphrasing something she had said long ago. Her eyes widened from surprise when she saw an older version of her childhood friend pinning her to the ground, her face carrying a rather blank expression as she looked up at him.

"Jemel you jerk!" She shouted as he held her into the hug, her fist clenching tight, and hit him over the top of his head. She was rather angry from having to leap down the tree and run off, thinking he was coming after to her with intentions of harming her. To make matters worse, she would have to limp home with a twisted ankle. Granted, it wasn't entirely his fault that she had tripped, but being the way she was, she would pin some of the blame on him.

Jemel's head made a satisfying 'clunk' as she hit him. He winced a bit in pain, but not much. Slowly, he let her out of his hug, but his smile stayed on his face. "Hey, I called out to you on the tree. You could have stopped to see who I was! I'm surprised that you didn't recognize me at all! I mean, I've grown a bit, but I haven't changed that much." He said as he sat back on the forest floor. His ears swiveled around a bit, taking in all the noises and making sure that they weren't being watched.

"So, what have you been up to? No, wait. Lets get into that den of yours there before you tell me all that's happened." Jemel said as he stood up and put his hand out for her to take.

"A bit?" She asked rhetorically "I haven't seen you since we were ten!" She shouted, looking a little annoyed with him for a moment. Her frown slowly faded into a small smile, that goofy smile of his calming her somewhat. Azriel had always been the more hot-headed one out of the two of them, even when they were small, but somehow Jemel's silliness and happier outlook always seemed to relax her.

She reached up and placed her hand in his, letting him help her up as she grabbed her bag of fruits. She then leaned into him a little, trying to keep herself steady as she bent her leg at her knee to keep her foot elevated. "Hmph, the least you could do is carry me since you made me hurt my ankle." She said to him with a smirk as she strapped her bag around her once more.

"Awww, did the little mousy girl get a boo boo?" Jemel said in a mocking tone. Knowing that she would hit him soon for doing so, he quickly bent low and lifted her up off the ground and slung her over his shoulder. "How about I carry you like this then? We don't got much further to go." He added before quickly running towards the entrance to her den. Once at the door, he gently set her back down, making sure Azriel didn't put any weight on her leg for the time being.

"So it's been some time since we last seen each other. You should have recognized my voice the second I said your name! I mean, I knew it was you on that tree once I saw your face. I can never forget those sparkling eyes of yours." He said as he waited for Azriel to invite him in. "Of course, you've had some things grow on you too, and that did throw me for a loop." He added with that goofy grin of his, totally expecting to be hit by her this time and not moving out of the way.

Azriel growled lowly at him, clenching her fist even tighter before raising it to strike him once more for his teasing remark. Jemel was lucky that his movements were quickly; though, being picked up so suddenly surprised her greatly, causing her to squeak out and flail about in his grasp. An angry look was still prevalent on her face, even as he sat her down.

She was somewhat tempted to leave him outside as he stood there, still grinning that goofy grin that she pretended to hate. A small smile began to creep out from the corner of her lips as he spoke about her eyes, a light blush almost forming from the compliment. She was just about to wave her little signal for him to follow her inside, until her ears snapped at attention and caught his comment about her recent 'growth.' "Why you . . ." She seethed through clenched teeth as she took her entire bag and 'bonked' him over the head with it.

Once her rage had subsided she reached her hand out to help him to his feet. She then led him through the 'secret passage', which was really nothing more than a few well placed large leaves, and brought him inside with her.

Once more, Jemel's head made that clunk sound as Azriel beamed him. Seeing as he knew the hit was coming, and in fact had been asking for it, it didn't hurt as bad this time. Rubbing his head a bit, he looked up to see her outstretched hand. With that smile still on his face, Jemel let himself be lead into her hideaway. "So how's your family been? Like you said before, it's been a long time since we've seen each other. But I am happy that you seem to be doing good." He said as his tail flicked back and forth happily as she lead him on.

Azriel sat her bag against the wall, limping awkwardly so as to avoid putting any weight or strain on her twisted ankle. She then leaned forward, bending at her waist, to retrieve a few plums from the bag. She handed a couple to Jemel before finally resting on a tree trunk, and propping her leg up on a nearby rock. "Everyone is fine. My brother got married last year. Mother still treats both of us as though we're still four and six years old. And father is still," she paused for a moment, shaking her head as she thought to herself, ". . .father. He still believes canines are all feral brute strength with no intellect. While he and mother are holding onto the belief that I shouldn't have moved out on my own because I'm not married yet." She said, shaking her head once more before taking a bite of her plum. "What about your folks?" She asked between bites, looking up at him as she motioned for him to have a seat and knowing it wouldn't take him long to get himself comfortable.

Jemel slowly padded around the inside of her home a bit as Azriel motioned for him to take a seat, his feet patting down the ground a little before he actually sat down on all fours, his head cocked to one side as he watched her eat and talk. When she passed him a plum, he took the fruit, gave it a sniff and then bit in; his sharp teeth easily tearing away the flesh of the plum. His mouth worked to eat it slowly before swallowing, his face showing a mixture of joy and disgust.

"Sorry, I'm not much of one for greens these days. I've been eating birds and fish. LOTS of fish! I never knew how great those things could taste!" He said with a sparkle in his eye from the mere mention of the word. Shaking his head a bit, he look back up at Azriel before continuing. "Well, dad's still got that wandering eye of his, but momma keeps him in line. Usually with lots of ear and tail pulling. And sex of course. My sibs have started to move away, looking for other territory to hunt in or mates, but I just can't leave this place. Too many good memories you know?"

His eyes kept looking at Azriel, but in a calm gentle way. His tail swished back and forth on the ground, kicking up a light dusting of dirt into the air while his ear's twitched and swiveled now and then, picking up distance sounds in case they needed to run or hide. His eyes eventually turned to her foot, and the sprain she had suffered. "You should wrap that up you know. It's too much work to remember to hobble around without putting weight on your feet." Jemel added as he quickly finished off his first plum and started to clean his furry digits off.

Azriel's head tilted slightly towards the left side of her neck, her face baring a look of confusion as she saw the mixed expressions on Jemel's face. Once he had explained that he was more into meats the greens, her lips began to purse up toward the right corner of her mouth and a small smirk began to form. "Felines. . ." She thought to herself. Knowing it couldn't be helped, she shrugged her shoulders at him. "I'll guess you'll just have to make do. I'm only expected to gather fruits for my clan." She said rather casually before she finishing off her plum and licking the juice from her bottom lip.

She couldn't help but snicker softly as he made mention of his parents, old memories of watching his mother drag his father from another female by his tail. "It's good to hear that those two are still doing well. I couldn't leave this place even if I wanted to; mother would fuss up storm if I left without a mate. . ." Her voice began to give off a somewhat annoyed tone as she hinted at how old fashion her mom was.

"Well," she began, drawing out the 'e' playfully, "I could have bandaged it up by now. That is, if my supplies weren't way up there." She informed him, pointing behind him at set of rocks that she used as a makeshift shelf in which to store her bandages and other medicinal items. Normally, it wouldn't have been much of a problem for her to climb up and get them herself, but her bum ankle made that possibility a little less than feasible.

"Yeah, everyone is good. Or as good as they get. Of course, with everyone starting to move away, its hard to keep track." Jemel replied, not bothering to comment about what cat's a like. He did smirk, however, when Azriel mentioned her mother wanting her little girl to settle down and get her some grandkids. He knew her well enough to know that such a thing wasn't going to be happening any time soon.

When she pointed to her medical supplies, Jemel looked up at the shelf. His body tensed a bit, his shoulders rolling up and down as the judged the distance. A second later, he shot up to the rock in one bound; his claws digging into some loose sediment. Carefully, he reached out and gabbed the bandages before leading back down next to her, his feet kicking up only a trace amount of dirt into the air.

Without saying anything, Jemel started to wrap her foot and ankle up, making sure it wasn't too tight. "You should find a better spot for these things. Just think what would happen if I wasn't here to get them down for you?" He said as his hand finished wrapping the bandage around her leg. His hand stayed on her tho, his fingers lightly caressing her bare leg, his mind remembering all the fun they use to have as children.

Azriel blinked rapidly as she watched Jemel with a rather surprised look on her face. After all, one minute he was on the ground sitting right in front of her, and just a second later he was up at her shelf. Even when she was perfectly fine it would still take her a while to make that climb, and here he was leaping up there as though it was nothing. Her eyes followed him as he returned to the ground below with a well stuck landing. "Well, I guess now you're the only somewhat clumsy Jemel I used to know."

She blushed a bit as she watch him approach her, reluctantly holding up her leg for him to bandage it. Though, she turned her head away and opted to look at the wall opposite them. She raised her hands up into the air, her arms bent at her elbows and her palms facing upward, as she shrugged lightly. "It seemed like a good idea at the time. . ." She confessed, having no other reason to keep her supplies so far out of her reach.

Her blush began to grow a deeper red, though it was still concealed by her fur, as she noticed that his hand did not leave her leg. As she felt his fingers traveling up along her leg she began to wiggle it about, trying to shake him off, but for some reason she felt to timid to address it verbally.

It took a bit, but Jemel finally came to his senses. His hand slowly dropped away from her leg, letting Azriel put it back on the stump for rest. But he didn't move from in front of her, his eyes moving up from her leg to really look at his friends now fully developed body. A soft smile formed on his lips as he reached her young pleasant face. Only then did he finally set back on his haunches, putting a little distance between the two of them.

"I'm sure you'll eventually find someone to take for a mate; and I know you'll make him a happy mouse." He said as he looked up into her eyes, his tail swishing back and forth on the ground in a contented mood. "So, what should we do now? You're going to be hobbling around for a bit and we've talked about our families. What's there to do?" He asked, blatantly changing the subject and being unsure himself what the next move between them should be.

Azriel breath an inward sigh of relief as Jemel finally began to move away from her somewhat, her blush slowly fading from her cheeks. 'What's with me today. . .?' She thought to herself. She began to wonder why, all of a sudden, the presence of someone she had once bathed with was now making her nervous. She was always close to him when they were young, but now something felt very different when she was around him.

"Speaking of mates. . ." She began, her tone reaching a bit of a high point as started to speak, "as much as you liked to chase those other little kittens in our village, I'm surprised you haven't found a mate yet. Or is there something you aren't telling me?" She asked him, an intrigued smirk forming on her lips as her tail flicked back and forth.

Jemel winched as Azriel pressured him with that question; his attempt to change topics failing dreadfully. Shifting his body a little, nervous to answer such a thing, his face now carried the blush that had been on hers just moments ago.

"Well," he started to say, trying to think of some way out of this question but not seeing one and knowing that stalling won't help, continued on to say "I guess I'm looking for the right one. Those 'other kittens' as you said were fun to be around, but I never really connected with them." He managed to say, his eyes watching as Azriel's tail swished back and forth in the dirt, his instincts wanting to have him dive down and bat it around a bit, but was contained by his mind for the time being. His eyes moved from the floor and once more started to look at her body, loving the view the young mouse girl was offering him.
