Persephone Lynn awoke that morning practically leaping from her bed. She pranced around her room in glee in her thin silk night gown as she sang 'Happy Birthday' to herself. Today she was going to turn 13, which was a big deal in their family, it was when a young girl would learn how to be a proper young lady and be treated like one from that day on. Every girl in the family was given special lessons on their 13th birthday, and it was always a big family event to celebrate the young woman's coming of age.
Persephone had been excitedly counting down the days till her birthday, and now it was finally here. She had already seen a few her cousins and nieces ceremonies, though all that ever happened that she saw, was lots of dancing, eating, and general party things. Her mother had told Persephone that the lessons, and the actual ceremony itself, were always a surprise. Persephone, over the last few months, had been wracking her brain trying to figure out what exactly what was going to happen, but everyone had refused to even give her the smallest of hints.
She was so very eager to find out that she quickly dressed herself in a pink tank top that just barely covered her flat stomach and her favorite pair of daisy duke shorts. Persephone quickly put her long strawberry blond hair into low pigtails, before brushing her teeth and rushing downstairs to greet everyone.
"Good morning!" Persephone called out happily as she raced down the stairs. She first ran to her mother and father and gave them tight hugs. "Good morning sweetheart." Said her mother and kissed Persephone's forehead. "Happy Birthday doll." Her father replied and gave his daughter a tight squeeze and let her go. Persephone stepped back and looked around, noticing that only her parents were in the kitchen.
"Mom? Dad? Where is everybody? I-I thought we were gonna celebrate like we always do." Persephone asked, the confused look clear in her expression and tone.
