Midterms were over, thank god. After months of preparation, hours of studying and a week filled with little but tests, they finally got a long weekend off. And what better way was there to celebrate this occasion than getting shitfaced with your fellow victims? This is what led Adam, college senior, to be lounging at a bar, surrounded by his classmates, every one of them rejoicing at the prospect of a study-free, homework-free weekend. Because they might still have classes starting on Monday, but this Thursday night paid no heed to that fact. This was to be three days of nothing but fun.
So then why did Adam feel so lousy? Nursing his beer in one hand, the light brunet wasn’t contributing to any of the conversation around him, barely even listening to it. The current topic of conversation was the party the following evening being put on at a frat house off campus, and he found himself not particularly caring. At the moment, he didn’t even know if he wanted to go to said party. After all, not having any classes for the next three days didn’t mean he should waste precious minutes being drunk. Adam was at the top of the class for a reason, one that didn’t condone partying all weekend.
He might get drunk tonight, but Friday, Saturday and Sunday night would be study-oriented. Adam wasn’t ready to fall behind just for some fun, because he was well aware that, if he did, he would never let him live it down. No, he had to stay at the same level as him if he ever wanted to show his face at school again. His gray eyes flicked over to the end of the table, where his rival was sitting, as far away from Adam as possible. In a way, the two of them were friends, living next door to each other in an apartment complex (though that was far from planned), yet at the same time, both of them were in a constant struggle to beat the other man. That was how they lived their entire college career, and that was how they'd continue to do so.
