Layla had just turned nineteen and was coming home for her first Christmas since going off to college.
She waited eagerly at the train station, trying to spot her parents as she toted around her rolling suitcase. After ten minutes, she turned around, only to see them trying to creep up on her. She smiled. "You guys totally suck! I could have been waiting here all night!"
Her mother smiled, shaking her head. "Your father would have jumped out at you eventually, I'm sure."
They grabbed her bags, her mother holding her hand as they went out to the car. The drive to their house wasn't long, the conversation mostly about how her first semester was going, what she thought her grades were, did she meet any cute boys, etc. etc. It was all pretty boring and, well, parenty. Regardless, she was glad to see her parents. As they pulled up to the mansion-like house, she noticed several more cars in the drive way.
"Mom?" she gestured to the cars, "What's all this?"
Her father replied before her mother could. "Oh, we figured since it was your first Christmas as a co-ed that we'd invite the whole family over. Your Aunt Gillian is here and my brother Steve brought his family. It's going to be nice and cozy, all of us being in this huge old house. It just didn't feel right, just the three of us using it all up. Kind of depressing really."
Layla rolled her eyes at her father, walking into the marbled entryway.
