How do people make pretty textual designs like the one shown in the picture?
Particularly, the design of the middle example. When I try to do it, it comes out looking like this:

I'm having trouble with the line that the arrow is pointing to right next to the parentheses. If anybody knows how to make these, please, would you show me, or at least point me in the direction of a tutorial of some kind? Because I don't even know what to call it and searching for "pretty text design" comes up with stuff I don't want.
