Vampires exist, this was no secret, they had been open about their existence for the past ten years or so and for the most part humanity had accepted them. At least that was the way things appeared on the surface but in reality it wasn't so simple. Sure you didn't get chased with a wooden stake most places and people had for the most part stopped wearing crucifixes 'just in case'... but people treated you differently, always watching you very closely, always wearing turtlenecks and scarves in the middle of the summer. Honestly it was insulting, he hated the fact that people treated him like that just because he was a vampire and ate people... he wasn't a monster after all, Joseph rarely killed people any more.

Some people would think it is cool to be a vampire, he was fifty years old and looked twenty five, would look twenty five forever, and of course being a vampire he found it quite easy to amass a great deal of money. But there were downsides, the way you were treated being only the most simple of them but beyond that you couldn't spend more then an hour in the sun without feeling like you were about to burn up, and then actually burning up, and food didn't taste the same, he could eat normally but the food seemed to only have a hint of the taste that it once did. Still Joseph could think of worse things, the whole Twilight craze, while asinine meant that all he had to do was say I am a vampire and girls were all over him, not that he ever had trouble before but this made things simpler.

Still things could be worse, like how they had just gotten worse, new to the neighbor hood his next door neighbors had knocked on his door that morning, explaining that they had to go out of town last minute and asking him to watch after their daughter while they were away... a glorified baby sitter... but just to get rid of them he had promised he would do so, knowing that if they knew he was a vampire they would never have even considered it.

Now as the sun was setting he went out, knocking on the door to check up on the young lady like had been asked, wondering just how much trouble this would end up being.

Emory was watching tv when the next-door neighbor knocked on the door. She rolled her eyes as she rose from her chair, I'm fucking seventeen, I don't need a babysitter, she thought as she walked to the door. In her silk sleep shorts and tank top, she was nearly ready for bed. She didn't usually have too many things to do on friday nights, most of her friends had other things to do and she wasn't really one to party. Her parents though, didn't believe that however, so now she had to deal with being checked up on.

She checked the peep-hole to make sure it was her neighbor, it was. Then, she opened the door to see him. "I'm fine. I promise. I can cook myself dinner and everything," she chided as she ushered him in. Padding around in her socks, she waited for him to shut the door. "See? No booze, no friends, no boys, no fun..." she added, crossing her arms insecurely.

He smiled a little bit when she greeted him, she was cute, just his type, just the type that he loved to slip his fangs into the thigh of. That was his favorite place to drink from and in those shorts he could see that spot that he drank from. Feeling his fangs starting to emerge Joseph pressed his lips closer together to keep them from showing, the smile vanishing. “Look I know that it sucks that your parents think you need to be looked after, but they asked me to so I am going to try to do as they asked.”

Still he made a show of looking around to see if someone else was around, even though his nose already told him that she was home alone. That was good, it might have been an inconvenience but he had promised to look after her, problem was now that he was inside he was tempted to take a bite, he hadn't fed for a few days and...

Pushing those thoughts aside he looked back to her. “So um, hey I wouldn't mind keeping you company if you are feeling lonely, maybe help you avoid getting bored.”

She sighed at him, "Sure, do what you're supposed to." Emory then gave him a slight smile, "I am a bit lonely though. I'm watching tv, but its not that great." Another sigh and she pulled her hair down from its ponytail, shaking her head slightly as her long hair fell from it in light waves. Then, she walked into the living room and plopped herself onto the couch, looking at him expectantly.

Emory had been watching a press confrence on the vampire acceptance bill, but she changed it, not wanting to get into a political debate with her neighbor. She assumed he was against the acceptance, just like her parents, so she didn't want to have him think she was just rebeling against her parents.

Following her Joseph caught a glimpse of what was on the TV before she changed it, the acceptance bill finally going through after people had fought it for years. True they had been out and more or less accepted for years but the bill was a nice little official touch. Everyone expected the president to sign it quite quickly, more or less assuring that vampires would vote for his reelection in two years. “Bought freaking time.” He muttered as he sat down, not even thinking for a second that he had said it out loud.

The bill was the first step towards normalization, having a normalized life, voting and having a real drivers liscence, all the things that people took for granted.

"Really?" she quickly questioned him, turning to look at him suddenly. "You think so too?"
Her head tilted, looking at him in a different light now. "What's your reasoning for their accepance?"
She now wondered if her parents knew how he felt, seeing as the reason they had left so suddenly was to protest the bill.
