Wingless (Me and Beef)

It was a warm, quiet night int he forest. The dark sky above was unusually void of stars, and the moon was invisible. There was no lighting now, leaving the little forest in complete darkness. Even the creatures of the night did not dare to venture forth from their dwellings.

Suddenly, there was a faint light in the sky, and it streaked across the blackness. The stillness of the forest was intense, the warm air almost stifling now. This lasted only a moment before that stillness was broken with a thunderous crack, as if a fork of lightning had just struck a tree. A brilliant flash of light illuminated the forest. A massive shock-wave immediately followed this, seeming to radiate from the very heart of the forest. It was enough to knock a person over if they had not been prepared for it.

After the shock-wave had passed, the forest seemed to return to life. The night's creatures began their hunt for food. It was if they had been expecting whatever had caused the shock-wave and had waited for it to pass before venturing forth from their dens.

Daniel groaned bringing the weight of his axe down on the tree chopping into the thick timber. He wiped the the sweat from his forehead running his hand though his scruffy brown hair. Daniel would of usually headed home by now but things seemed a lot more peaceful tonight then other nights. Daniel rolled up his sleeves to take another crack. Daniel was in good shape from his more wilderness life style but standing in at 5,10 there was somethings in the woods he wouldn't stand a chance against by himself.

Daniel stopped as a strange light made his shadow against the tree. He turned around his blue eyes focused up on the bright sky as the crack came down Daniel shielded his eyes thinking of it as only lightning. Part of the reason the shock wave caught him off guard. Daniel fell on his back knocking the wind out of him. Daniel looked up just in time to see a axe coming down towards him as he rolled out of the way. "oh god"Daniel took a breath thinking about how bad that could of been.

Just as Daniel started to laugh about it he heard a deep growl looking up he saw the cold yellow eyes of a black wolf. A shiver went down Daniels spine as he stiffened. Daniel looked over at his axe thinking he could get one good hit in. As Daniel started moving towards his axe he heard another growl. This is when Daniel realized the pack was hunting. It seemed that someone was on his side as he heard the tree he was chopping start to fall. Daniel took the moment as he ran off away from the wolfs. Two chasing after him one crushed by the tree. Daniel ran as fast he could feel as if his skin was going to catch on fire. Just as Daniel felt his was done for he tripped over a figure, falling on the mossy grass.

He had, unknowingly, run to the epicenter of the blast that had knocked him over. The mossy grass would end just inches from his face. Whatever grass had been there was gone, and the earth was dark with an oddly glassy sheen. Heat radiated from it. The ground had been changed for several feet in every direction, with a small, deep crater in the very center. Even the trees that had once stood there were gone, now nothing more than cinders.

There, at the bottom of the crater, was a young woman. Her face, arms, and legs were covered in a mixture of what looked like mud and blood. The gown she wore looked to have been snow white once, but was now stained crimson and shredded in several places, revealing long gashes that bled freely.


The wolves backed away, heads low and tails between their legs. They turned and retreated, as if frightened by the unconscious girl.

Daniel fell down in the small creator with a grown as he heard growls behidne him he quickly turned aroudn grabbing a big stick. He held it up looking up at the wolves bewildered as they just turned away. Daniel then looked down at the girl then all around him wondring where seh came from as he inched over to her lightly turning her so he could see her face his blue eyes set on her. "Are you okay?" he said not knowing if she was alive he did see some blood on her or what he thought was blood. Daniel looked over her for a minute as he then bent down pressing hsi head up against her chest trying to hear a heart beat.
