Batman and Robin were running. Fast. Breathing hard. Keeping pace with each other. Twisting and turning as if they were a single being. Ducking down an alley. Taking a surprise turn. Backtracking.
'Next alley. After the barber's shop.' Batman gasped. Robin knew where they were. The alley would take them to the Batmobile, and to safety.
They swung into the alley at the last minute. Made it as far as a bend and froze. Their path was blocked by figures, dressed in black, heads covered too.
'Shit,' said Robin.
Batman turned and saw identical figures blocking their retreat. 'Double shit,' he said.
The figures advanced towards them, slowly, steadily, inexorably.
A fight was inevitable.
'Be brave, Robin.' Batman touched his friend's arm briefly.
'Be my hero, Batman.' Robin tried to smile, but failed.
Robin squared up to the figures ahead of them. Batman turned to face the figures behind.
