An idea for a pokemon-esque world, perhaps for a TTRPG

I've always liked the aesthetic appeal of the solarpunk world of Pokemon, but I've never wanted to role play in that world, mostly because I don't do cannon role plays, and too many characters in that franchise are minors, and also I'm not interested in bestiality, since so many Pokemon fans want to fuck pokemon. So, I thought of a kind of world that better aligns with my own personal interests.

About 20 years ago a group of scientists inside a secret underground laboratory accidentally opened up a portal into hell. Out came demons and monsters. The scientists and security team fought valiantly to seal the portal and drive off the evil that poured out of it, but some of the corrupting energy came in contact with a computer hooked up to the internet. From the digital world came creatures known as "sprites" who drove off the monsters and demons, and helped shut the portal for good. Unfortunately many demons escaped and started corrupting the wilderness, turning common beasts into monsters, and making transportation and travel more difficult. Luckily the sprites also remained, and they were very happy to help humans fight and control the demons and their monsters.

Sprites resemble humans, though they lack the initiative of total sentience. They come in a variety of sizes and colors, and are suitable for a number of roles. They can speak and read languages, pick up trades quite handily, and are dutiful in their roles. They are very much like a computer program; powerful, flexible, and capable, but without a human telling them what to do they struggle to find purpose. This puts them in a weird legal loop hole where they have greater sentience than common pets like cats or dogs, but cannot function independently, so most end up finding some humans to work for. You can find sprites working construction, operating registers at super markets, making deliveries, and even helping with coding or scientific research. Sprites can consent, and sprite-human relationships are not uncommon. They can defend themselves, and they can tell right from wrong, but when left alone they tend to wander into the wilderness to fight monsters, which is their strongest instinctive desire. There are sprite protective agencies and there is a whole section of law devoted to sprites and their determined rights. Of course, there are criminal elements who intend to abuse sprites and use their powers for selfish and cynical gains.

Demons are similar to humans in that they have true sentience, and are most identifiable by their horns and non-human skin tones, (such as red, blue, or grey). Demons can turn an otherwise safe patch of wilderness into a dangerous and hostile environment. Trees, animals, and insects tainted by demonic influence become monsters, which attack humans on sight, and otherwise do the bidding of their demonic masters. (These monsters share the same design sense as poket monsters, though they cannot be caught and tamed. They exist as the primary opponent for sprite companions to fight and gain experience from. Demons are more like rival trainers, or minibosses.)

Sprites are not "captured" and you do not "tame" them. If a player trainer wants a sprite to become a companion, they have to *talk* to the spite and convince them to follow the trainer. Sprites love to fight, and are quite durable. Wild sprites commonly spar for entertainment and to gain experience so they can better fight monsters. Domestic sprites can engage in fights so long as two or more registered trainers are present. A trained sprite, who is given directions by their trainer during a fight, are far more effective than a wild sprite on their own. Sprites have strength, speed, and special abilities that seem supernatural to humans, given their unique origins from the internet. Naturally trainers will bet money on sprite fights, and there is an entire league to regulate sprite fighting and maintain a safe and wholesome environment for sprites and trainers alike.

Like a pokemon trainer, a sprite trainer can use items in battle to heal or buff their sprite. Official sanctioned sprite fights mandate that trainers cannot harm each other. In the wilderness, when informal fights between trainers, or between trainers and demons occur, it's not uncommon for trainers to antagonize or even fight each other directly, though use of weapons is taboo. Instead, trainers might throw sand, blow horns, or use other methods to distract or disorient opponent trainers to make their sprites less effective. This is largely considered unsporting, but criminal sprite trainers use such tactics by default.

Demons can have a roster of monsters the same way a trainer might have a roster of sprites, and are known to give directions and use items in battles the same way a trainer might. Rarely will a trainer encounter a demon alone, as demons prefer to use their monsters to do their dirty work.

Trainers must be at least 18 years old. They are some of the few civilians who actively explore the wilderness between towns, making their profession highly prized by anyone in land development or transportation. Even trains struggle to pass through towns, as monsters commonly dismantle tracks and cut communication lines, so messages and packages often must be delivered by hand or by extremely skilled pilots or ATV drivers. Trainers are considered cheaper and more reliable, as there are monsters large and menacing enough to destroy vehicles on the land or the air. A good trainer with a good sprite capable of flight can make a good living just by carrying messages and small packages between towns and cities.

Humans struggle to fight monsters on their own, while sprites are incredibly adept at fighting them. If a human enters an area corrupted by demons, they are bringing at least one sprite along with them.

Thoughts/ comments/ critiques are welcome!

It definitely has the potential of being quite a scenario/world that takes on something familiar but also mixes up so there is new things involved. I see how it can bring quite an interest with those who come across this thread and has plenty to work with.

I’d be interested in learning more of how it all works.
