Lauren's parents had wanted her to take a plane, but she was scared to fly. She'd rather risk her life on the icy roads than in a plane, at least if she crashed in her car she was more likely to survive than if the plane were to fall out of the sky. And she hated it when someone would tell her there are more fatal car accidents than plane accidents, of course there are more fatal car accidents, there are more cars than there are planes. Didn't they ever think of that?
It had taken her three days to drive to her parents house. The heater in her car was on full blast, so was the radio, but she turned it off as she approached her old home. It was a huge manor-like house. Three floors, a basement and attic. There were no neighbors around for miles.
She pulled into the driveway, before she even put the car in park the front door opened and her parents stepped out and onto the porch. Lauren got out of the car. Of course she was dressed warmly, long warm coat, gloves, winter boots, blue knit scarf around her neck, matching knit hat pulled down low enough to keep her ears warm.
Glancing over at her parents, the two said something to each other, of course she was too far away to hear, then her mother went back inside and her father started walking towards her.
"Happy thanksgiving, Dad," she said, hugging him back. She gave him a grateful smile when he took her keys from her and told her to get inside and get warm, that he would bring in her luggage.
"Your mother has a surprise for you, princess," he yelled after her.
Once inside the house, she removed her gloves, stuffing them in her coat pockets, then took off her coat, scarf and hat. Her bright red hair was a little disheveled.
After hanging them up, she called out, "Mom, Dad said you had a surprise for me," as she sat down on the bench to remove her winter boots. She didn't want to track snow all over the house. She was wearing designer jeans and a red turtleneck sweater.
"Oh dear, Lauren you know we dress for dinner," her mother said, "and your hair is a mess. I was hoping you'd be more presentable." Her mother said, sounding distressed.
Lauren rolled her eyes, suddenly all the reasons why she'd left home came rushing back to her. Did she really think I would drive here in an evening gown and heels? she asked herself.
"Mom, the surprise. Dad said you had a surprise for me." She stood up, and turned around when her father came in with her luggage.
"We have a border," her mother answered, adding, "Now go upstairs and put on the dress I laid out for you on the bed. And fix your hair, I want you to be presentable when you meet him."
One look at her father's face told her it was best to do as her mother asks. My surprise is they have a border? Why do they have a border, it's not like they need the money. What's so special about the guy that her mother wants her to hurry and make herself 'presentable' before she meets him?
Feeling as if she'd just entered the twilight zone, Lauren walked up the stairs, and down the hall towards her parents bedroom.
