Footsteps leave empty spaces behind in the dark. If it's so dark, will anyone see their imprints? Are they actually leaving marks? He continues forward like an apparition. His eyes seek any light in this darkness and jumps at any sound that draws near. But it's all in his head. There is nothing here. He reaches out to touch anything-anyone- but there is nothing there. He brushes against the vapors of happiness and glimmer that evaporate the moment his fingers try to touch them. He can't keep hold of anything. Is this dark tunnel his mind? Or is it another dream? Was it reality? He couldn't tell if he was walking up or down, left or right. Was he even in the here and now?
Compression against his chest makes him ache, barely breathe as he walks endlessly. He is tired, so very tired. But that was what emptiness did to you: it took all the energy from your soul and sucked it out. Did he have a soul anymore? He felt as empty as the darkness was oppressive. But he continued forward. Why? Hope. His bruised and battered heart was filled to the brim with hope just as his eyes glistened with tears. He tried to speak and no sound emerged. His fingers brushed his lips, shocked. Did the darkness consume everything? He couldn't even hear himself breathing. Couldn't hear his heartbeat. What was this place?
He held his teddy bear tighter to his chest as if it could ward off the blackness. Chase away the demons that whispered nightmares. Battle the lies that spewed from their ash-coated lips that carried their own kind of sweet poison. Clutching his salvation, he started to hear his thoughts finally making their presence. Words zoomed about his vision, brilliantly shimmering. Did thoughts really exist here? He pondered and saw the question form from the decaying glimmer before it faded. He gasped. The sound echoed as if bouncing off of walls instead of shadows. Could he save himself?
He grasped onto his hope-filled heart and pulled it from his chest. It hurt, but then there was light that beat into the darkness. It pulsed between his fingers, causing silvery blood to pour while golden light sparkled from the bleeding drum that chimed in his palm. There was a hole on his chest, but he could fix it, right? But he needed out of the darkness. Out of this room of despair and loneliness. His bear hung limply from his other arm but was soon held over the gaping hole to compensate for the void. The heart pulsed, chasing away the ghouls that were after him. Chased away the demons with their ash-coated lips that begged for his surrender.
His hair hid his vision for a moment before it winked back into existence as he pushed the strands away. It was so bright here now. There were still shadowed corners and doorways but they were shrinking. Fear made them appear bigger. He was still afraid, still unsure, but he had hope. It was all he needed. A hallway filled his vision, long and dark, but glittering as if embedded with stones of all different colors. A rainbow of light shined around him as he stepped across the threshold and out of the dark.
It was like nothing he had ever seen. A kaleidoscope of beauty and harmony as the stones winked and coated his face in what felt like love and acceptance. He could dwell here forever. He wanted to stay here forever. His eyes shut out the colors, but they still sparkled behind his eyes and he was captured in awe. Opening his eyes, he saw cracks forming in the walls and he was afraid. The beauty was crumbling around him. He ran as the walls collapsed around him, the beautiful place ruined. Had he destroyed something worthwhile again? Tears of silver fell from his eyes and light the path he had taken. A past he would never return to.
His vision blurred before he slammed into a wall, jarring him from his mad dash. This wall was gray and red. Cracks formed in the wall and he stepped back, shielding his heart and his companion. He had to keep them safe. He had to save something from the destruction he caused. He didn't want to ruin another beautiful thing. There was a cloud of dust as the wall fell and light hit his face as his eyes opened. He blinked against the brightness, eyes adjusting to the suddenness. His mouth dropped in awe as he stepped through the hole in the wall.
Birds, people, animals, grass, trees...living things-life- dazzled before his eyes and he cried. He couldn't help it. He fell to his knees and sobbed. He thought he had died. That he couldn't have anything beautiful again. He cradled his heart as he held his bear- but his other hand was empty. He gasped, lips trembled as he searched for his bear. But it was gone. He cried harder. A warm hand touched his shoulder and he looked up. A beautiful woman looked down at him, hair and eyes so familiar. She helped him to his feet and cradled his heart gently in her small hands.
She looked up at him, silently asking. He stared, afraid again. She took his hand, holding his heart between their palms. And took his other hand, her heart in between those palms. He gasped and looked between their hands, seeing both hearts- so similar and beating with such hope. Tears trekked down his face, leaving silvery tracks. Her face was much the same but a smile beamed like a beacon in a storm. He pulled her into his arms, cradling her head against his chest. He would protect this beautiful thing. He would protect her heart, just as she promised to protect his.
Would he break this beautiful thing? He prayed for strength and guidance. Feeling her little hand in his, he felt that strength. Felt that love. He could do this. He could make it work. Smiling at her, he kissed her lips and the world faded away. It was just the two of them. Nothing would separate them again. She was his treasure. His companion. His whole heart. And together, they would make it through life- the impossible, unstoppable flow of time. And they would search for their own happiness- together.
