Moonlight shimmered over the still waters along a quiet stretch of city dock. Ancient lampposts added their dim glow at regular intervals but could could scarcely pierce the dark, standing their weary vigil before rows of colossal warehouses just a hundred meters from the wharf. Inside one of these old buildings there was naught but the faint hum of the two fluorescent lights far above that still clung to life. On ground level far below this stillness was disturbed aside one of many dusty containers. Its shadow warbled, and from it cautiously stepped the vigilante hero Umbra. Her scouting had made her confident nobody else was in the building yet, but one could never be too cautious.
This wasn't a chance she was going to mess up. For once Umbra had taken to planning things carefully, this was too important for the 'punch first' style of heroics she usually preferred. According to her source the Heilin mafia family had been working to procure something which could shatter balance and plunge the city into all-out war- an experimental super serum, Si-2. 'Experimental' was far too generous a thing to call it in Umbra's eyes. It was never intended as any kind of medication the way she saw it talked about in media- a "drug gone bad" or "the result of ill considered but well meaning science" as she'd heard in a news interview the other day. Her research had led Umbra to a different conclusion. Si-2 was just a raw ingredient itself in the development of terrible new weapons. The other key raw ingredient was humans- the more the better, flesh to fed through the grinder in pursuit of ultimate power. In its current form the survival rate for ingesting Si-2 was roughly one in twenty, but the danger of Si-2 was the point. Only the strongest weapons were needed in the eyes of its designer. Like hell was she about to let anything like that into her city.
Until now there had only been three known uses of Si-2 (successful ones anyway) after it's development only a year ago. Old Si-1 had been around for decades without anyone being able to improve on the formula. Far less potent, far less deadly, Si-1 would give ordinary people mild powers for about twelve hours or, if you were unlucky, make you sick and queasy for that time instead. Not the most extraordinary thing. These days it was most popular as a stimulant among those with natural powers. Umbra had spent plenty of time knocking around the crooks and street thugs who preferred the stuff, and it was still a big moneymaker for the Heilin and other families of their ilk. Si-2 was another beast entirely. The powers it granted to survivors were both permanent and much more potent than those of its predecessor, but seemed to rob something of their mind. She was fairly sure at least, the details of post-transformation were the hardest to obtain. Likely because all three instances known thus far had ended in grizzly fashion.
And now the Heilin wanted to bring this into the city? Were they fucking crazy? Until now Umbra had just been thankful supplies of Si-2 were still drastically limited, using it at any scale was in no way practicable. So why were the Heilin trying to get it now? Didn't it just expose them to greater risk? It was no more than a sample they were going to pick up. Oh well- those questions could be answered later. Right now, Umbra needed to focus on retrieving that sample. It was somewhere in this warehouse, of that she was sure. The many layered deception undertaken by the Heilin to ensure none of the other families could sniff out their activities meant she had no clue where other than in this building. Only the ranking member in the retrieval team would know its location. They should be arriving before long. Umbra needed to wait until they located the sample to snatch it, otherwise she could search this place for weeks and still come up empty.
For a few minutes Umbra patrolled the lowest floor of the warehouse, not to find the sample, but just to study its layout closer. From the shadows she could get a general sense for what an area was like, but it wasn't the same as seeing it with her own two eyes. Knowing the layout of the place would be very useful in a short while. After ten minutes or so of patrolling Umbra decided it was time to take up watch, she wanted to be ready when they arrived after all. Her form vanished into the shadow of a nearby support pillar and reappeared high above. Over its ground level this warehouse had a further three which wrapped around the edge for four floors in all, leaving a large open central space for bigger machinery. Umbra reappeared on the third floor beside a stack of old crates, hunkering down in their shadows. This vantage point put the most exits in view while giving a wide vantage of the warehouse floor. Now, she just had to wait. The Heilin were due for arrival within the hour.
It was only twenty minutes later that Umbra sensed activity outside, the vaguest of hints at the edge of her shadow perception. She could be certain of nothing other than people had arrived on the eastern edge of the warehouse. Not out front, but that was hardly a surprise. Secrecy to the end was vital for all. Narrowing her gaze Umbra fixed intently on the two eastern doors, ready for whomever might arrive. The Heilin were of course the most likely but Umbra would be surprised had no one else figured out their activities. She'd managed to, after all, and though Umbra had a number of advantages with her powers and the sources available to her she would not consider herself an especially great detective. Even with none of the pieces she'd been given Umbra was sure others had sniffed it out. Just more complications- hooray! For now though Umbra's grumbling remained internal, and she remained all but invisible and stone still on the higher floor while the eastern door opened.
Umbra (real name Elizabeth) is a 22 year old hero fairly fresh on the scene. She stands at 5'9" with messy, sandy blonde hair that falls in loose waves to just above her shoulders. Her eyes are a vibrant green and freckles dot Umbra's face over the bridge of her nose and cheeks, continuing on down over her chest, shoulders, and lower back. She has a lithe but toned build, always aiming to stay in shape for her work, with pale skin and a collection of varying sized scars from past encounters. She has the power of umbrakinesis, allowing her to travel through and control shadows and darkness. She can change their shapes to her will and give them physical form, allowing Umbra a wide range of possibilities with her powers. Her costume consists of a special damage resistant black mesh suit underneath a vest of woven kevlar fabric, alongside slick steel toed boots and elbow length black gloves. She typically wears a full face cowl with a mask that covers her nose and mouth. Only Umbra's bright eyes are normally visible. This cowl joins into a half cloak that drapes over her left arm, black with silver trim, just like the rest of her uniform. Umbra's symbol is the shimmering silver outline of a crescent moon, emblazoned on the center of her vest.
(Thank you VERY much for reading everything, I hope this sparks your interest! Ideally I'm looking to build out the world here along with the story, each of us would eventually include multiple secondary characters along with our central ones to build out the world and conflict, the Si-2 plot is just the beginning! Intrigue, action, romance, drama, smut, all on the table depending on what we'd like to do. Here you could play another hero coming to intercept the deal, one of the Heilin on the retrieval mission, a member of another crime family coming to intercept the deal, a supervillain hoping to steal the Si-2 themselves, a reporter who caught wind of story and is looking for proof not knowing the danger, just about anything you'd like is an option!)
