Suggestion When you visit a user's profile, have an icon that lets you know you've already messaged this user in the past

Personally it has happened that I message someone only for them to remind me that we already chatted like a year or two prior. I've also gotten plenty of messages from others forgetting that we've already connected a while back. I think it'd be helpful to have an idea when you go to a user's profile that you've chatted with them in the past and you can pick up the convo where you left it off.

it's a bit more work, but you can search in your inbox for messages received by *member*. so if you wanna reach out to someone and you want to make sure you haven't chatted in the past, you can just make a quick search there first. if you do, every conversation they have replied to will show up (unless you have left the conversation, i think)

Even if you leave the conversation, rev's method still works. You just need to change the drop down on the filter from (All Folders) when you are filtering by the users name to "Left Conversations" or "Ignored" and it will pull up the PMs that you would have left or ignored with that person as well. So you can still leave them, and still check.

I know of this option, but it's not really feasible to run a search on someone's name in your inbox before you hit them up. I know I don't do it, nor to the people who've hit me up for the 2nd or 3rd time.

The problem with this, at least for me comes with the fact that left conversations seem to get deleted from their folder after a certain amount of time has passed unless I am missing something.

For me the left conversations go back to october of last year, so if the conversation has been left a year or two ago that convo has already vanished into ether, so the method only works somewhat with the left convos.

Are you just going to your left conversation folder or searching for a name?

The PM folder has a limit, but it doesn't actually delete old PMs. It is really weird. I myself can only go back to about 2024 on some left conversations, but if I type in name of someone I know I wrote with back in 2020. It pulls up the old PM in my Left Conversations (even though previously, before searching I could only go to 2024.)

I don't think time has to do anything with it, more about how many PMs you may have? I'm not really sure on that front but I'm able to pull up PMs from back when I joined the site. Or well, the names. There is still the PM bug where you actually can't retrieve left PMs still and I know that has been reported many times.

Yeah the name-filter works and manages to pull left-convos from 2023 for me. Didn't know about the username-search function and my dumdum brain didn't register it mentioned in your comment.

Taking back what I said. With left conversations + searching username in said folder it works as intended! Without the name filtering it just displays them till a certain month for me.

Ideally, I'd like to be able to click on another member's profile - and have a dashboard or something that shows my history with that member - our last 2 or 3 PMs, or interactions. Coding-wise this is tricky I'm sure, but I'll just focus on user experience considerations and functionality.

The conversation folders are extremely... ahem... limited...

While we're here, I'll also throw in...
On that dashboard, it'll be very handy if we could add our own personal and private notes about that member - e.g. even something as simple as 'their favorite color'. These are not visible to anyone else.

Yes!! This is precisely what I had in mind. The dashboard might be tricky coding-wise, but I'd settle even for just an icon or something that denotes we've communicated with this user before. If we could add notes that'd be even better.

I'm gonna offer the fly-in-the-ointment thing: searching for past conversations will not help you if the person has changed their screen name. :)

A flag against the account will certainly help (although a not-small amount of work to implement, and will probably be a long way down the list of things do to).

actually, if you search their new username, old conversations will come up from when they had another username, so even tho you might not recognize the name right now, you will at least know that you have interacted with them in the past.

Can the icon's alt text say “been there, done that” ?

I'm leaving. I'm leaving.

On a more serious note, I'd vote against this feature. We are here for a very long time, and people change :)

I have it in my professional life, when I discover with somebody that we've exchanged emails 10-15 years ago, and they were going through a douchy salesperson period, and now they are a functioning and kind adult. I think the same applies here.

I am just curious how much people spam messages for this to become a problem. I maybe reach out to 10 people.... a year.

Okay, cool. If it works that way, then I stand corrected. Play on, folks. :)

I can see why for some this could be a good functionality but for the most part I have to agree with Bellwright, people change, situations change, and most of my good friends started as enemies anyway, so.. I would not use this feature.

Personally, I don't see this happening guys. Even if it is something that we decided to implement, it would be at the bottom of a very long list of things Veks needs to tackle.

As Solo pointed out, It is easy enough to see if you have messaged people and all it takes is a moment and a second open tab to do so. Which, honestly isn't unreasonable to do your due diligence.

Furthermore, I also don't know of any site that does this.

This could also get messy in the backend due to users having the ability to change their usernames. I'm not sure of the retention policy in place right now to retain that data. But in order to accurately display such a dashboard there would have to be some sort of call to see if that username has be changed, then display the data accordingly. If that data regarding usernames and the changes expires, then it would skew the data and not really tell you if you messaged that person after a certain amount of time.

There may be some other type of ID for each user in the backend that doesn't change even if your username does. But that would still be an additional call, then display it on the UI.

And it also comes down to what the users would want. Do you just want to know how many times you messaged that user. Do you also want the date you last messaged them. Do you want to know what their username was at the time of that message. Do you want to be able to see those last few messages.

Server space can also be expensive. So to retain such data could be costly if certain policies have to change to satisfy the ask.

The way I see it, this is a solution to a problem that only exists if the user creates it for themselves. Going through your messages to check you haven't messaged somebody before seems like a simple enough solution without the site admin's having to come up with something for you and honestly, I tend to remember who I've been messaging anyway. I didn't even know you could search your own messages like has been suggested but now that I do this really does seem to just be solutions where there is no problem to solve.

Create a folder titled 'Ghosted/Ghosters/Contacted Before' and move those conversations there. That way, you can easily reference them later if you need to remember who you were talking to.

It's approximately 5-10 seconds of work max to do the search if their name seems familiar. More than "feasible" on a site that is provided as a free resource to its members. Would this be convenient, in a perfect world? Sure. But it's a decent chunk of dev work, and to present the alternative as "not really feasible" rather than simply "inconvenient" is going way too far.

I'm probably missing something, but why would it be a problem if you've talked/played with someone in the past? The worst that can happen is "we've talked/played before but I don't think we are/were a good match", but in my experience they'll more often to say "I think we talked years ago, I guess let's try again haha" if not "sure I enjoyed playing with you". If you have a genuinely bad experience with someone, there's the ignore feature already.
